"Those not familiar with Jones’ style, will listen slack-jawed at the shear anticipatory nature of his sound collage. The five lengthy tracks are based on hypnotic and somewhat menacing grooves: a repetitive dub bass beat, waves of Middle Eastern strings and voices, layers of building hand percussion. Each track is respective but the washes of sound/percussion come and go often creating a sense of motion and change. All of the tracks are similar and even share elements. Mid-East tension is so accurately captured through the use of the regions instrumentation (especially percussion), sinister electronics, samples of men chanting, women crying, sounds culled from the horrors of war, and occasional angry distortion that the listener’s listener will be transported to the belly of the beast.
‘Mullah Said’ displays two aspects of the work of Muslimgauze. Firstly, musically, it is in the delightful drifting ambient vein. The percussion is mainly acoustic hand drums - providing a rhythm of aural features - the trademark shimmering string sound heard on a number of releases is much in evidence, rhythms are generally slower, there are lots of samples of people speaking in conversation, markets wherever. ‘Mullah said’ opens the disc with the lovely mix of these sounds. ‘Every grain of Palestine sand’ continues the mood, with a slightly faster tempo, and more emphasis on the beat. But it soon locks into a mesmeric lassitude as various effects echo or smear the sounds, drums come in for short moments, different string sounds enjoin the play. ‘Muslims die India’ follows the mood though the voices seem darker, sadder, and then comes ‘Every grain of Palestinian sand’ followed by ‘Muslims die India’. Yes - not a typo, these tracks are repeated. Muslimgauze trend - to remix himself.  Prime Muslimgauze middle eastern ambience - if you like that side you will love this album. The final track is short and different, a crackling ground over which a singer chants a song interrupted by machine-gun percussive bursts - ‘An end’."

A2.  Muslimgauze "Mullah Said": Every Grain Of Palestinian Sand

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks.

»applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible.

layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance.

rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the EMS studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«.

the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular AV performances.

In 1989, professor Joel D. Funk, at the psychology department of Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, found that the music of Iasos bears striking resemblance to that which people hear during near-death experiences—at the very precipice between life and death, the mundane and the infinite.

By the mid-1970s—prior to ambient’s “musical furniture” and the coming age of New Age—Iasos had his hands on his first synthesizer and had made in-roads into both aborning genres. In dialogue with Vista, a benevolent music-maker from a distant dimension, Iasos conducted groundbreaking experimentation with tape reversal, feedback, and the electronic processing of acoustic instruments (phase-shifted flute, echoplex), working with some of the first commercially available synthesizers, and inventing innovative visual effects for his own mind-expansive live sets. In translating the tones of his galactic muse for the ears of Earth humans, Iasos helped midwife new genres into existence and utterly transform the compositional possibilities for every contemporary musician—all while living the life of a poor pirate eccentric in the Marin County dock system’s only telephone-equipped houseboat. 

Spotlighting selections from the first decade of Iasos’ inter-dimensional output, The Numero Group’s Celestial Soul Portraits 2LP/CD compilation features a bevy of never-before-seen photos, a 4,000-word history of Iasos, and an insight into the life and “crystal giggling energy” of Iasos, the other Greek god of ’70s exploration into music’s electronic stargate.
