Seattle Alternative Electro-Soul artist FEM du lit will release their new single, “DEAD MAMA” on Friday, May 10th. The first single off the upcoming album STIGMATA, is a beautifully haunted liturgy about the unethical mining of minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The chorus satirically calls out Tesla's lithium & cobalt mining as an American imperial assault against Congolese people. "Sippin' crimson in a Tesla–only price to pay is your dead mama. Dry heat in the Congo, cobalt dust is the way to go. Only price to pay..." The lack of modular technology in American mobile devices and laptops worsens the demand for exploited minerals (such as cobalt and coltan) and the toxic labor conditions miners are put under in Congo.

The soulful ballad is about the stigma of queerness–of homosexuality being perceived as an impurity–and ruptures in family relationships that ensue. Sung in a timeless, sorrowful disposition resembling Anita Baker, the single spotlights anti-religious themes from the album and showcases FEM du lit’s bilingual lyricism. The track ends with an intimate French poem spoken over a bolero melody, describing grief and pericardial effusion (or flooding of the heart)--a unique way of depicting patrilineal heartbreak. The afro-futuristic spin on production adds to the elemental feeling of drowning a broken heart.

Singer-producer Francesca Eluhu–artist name FEM du lit (a play on words meaning "woman of the bed")--is a French & Congolese musician based in Seattle, WA. Their music seamlessly pulls inspiration from both their Afro-diasporic heritage and an eclectic range of influences from Radiohead to Moses Sumney. Known for being the front-person to Seattle's psychedelic neo-soul band, Day Soul Exquisite, Francesca ventures into an alternative/indie, electro-soul sound for their solo project, FEM du lit.
