EMUH - ALD-52 EP

Every year Feral One opens up their demo submissions for a brief window, and only for Seattle area producers. It’s the world's window opportunity to hear who and what is going down in Seattle right now. 

This third volume has Longstocking kicking it off with their introspective indie vibes, which is often an underlying staple of Seattle music, regardless the genre. Like the track states, it’s a cutie, but with a moody inner coating. 

Next, I.S.H. levels up the energy bringing searing emerald heat with Bring It. It’s a banger Bass House track that will yank you from your thoughts, and toss you onto the dance floor. You’ll hear more from I.S.H. on FO come Winter. 

OG Feral One, EMUH, then leads us from “WTF?” to “F*ck yeah!”, which is a cunning balance this gem of a human has on lock. Fickle falls together in a way that tickles the mind. Its squeaks and tinges of old school will have your legs kicking and your heart swooning. 

Next, Jon Lee, a Seattle institution, goes Deep on the House track, Voyager. The purity of the synths and the tropical droning are magnetic, lulling you to something we now know we needed. 

A fitting transition to good old fashioned proper House is what Move Machine gifts us with Perfume Department. Wafting through, enticing us with the pulsing aroma of yesterday and the precision producing of today. 

Easily one of Seattle’s most talented dance duos, Lee Houser, gets Deep with Propera. While the perks ignite your hips into mode, the steady coolness of the bass keeps you hazed in. Brass stabs briefly wake you, to acknowledge the fact that you never want this jam to end. 

New duo to press their stamp on Seattle underground history is Intemporel Chốc Lát. Their track, I Just Wanted To Let You Know, wraps up this year's volume. Minimal, Deep and looming, this piece lets us know they are here and bringing a fresh heaviness to Seattle's ever divergent soundscape.

Michael Beggs - Little Things EP

I.S.H / @1-s-h, a Palestinian American, and Longstocking / @djlongstocking are not ones to shy away from activism and human rights. It's important that artists reflect the times and Feral One is here to facilitate that. While Palestine struggles for its very existence, what are musical artists to do but create. I.S.H and Longstocking noticed a severe lack of Arab house music in club spaces and decided to do something about it. They deliver a deep house gem from the heart, with a deep tech backup remix from EMUH / @emuhmusic. All three artists have an established history with Feral One Records, so this EP is quite a family affair.

Longstocking (Seattle, WA) and TKO (Calgary, AB) team up on the very first Feral One Records release. This new Seattle dance label will be one to watch for the sounds of today and tomorrow. Dysmorphia, the brand new album from the Seattle-based electronic producer, EMUH, is coming soon on Feral One Records, the rapidly ascending record label from another multi-talented producer and Seattle resident, Longstocking. 

When Longstocking set out to launch this new label which is now on its third release, she was intent on honoring the spirit of her current locale, branding it as “the Sub Pop of dance music.”

In that regard, Dysmorphia checks all the boxes. Attempting to categorize the now thousands of releases in the Sub Pop catalog is futile at best. A far more efficient approach is that of emotion: Humor. Love. Angst. Rage. Melancholy. Fear. Joy. All packaged into sounds that give the middle finger to pop music in a way only Seattle knows how.

Somehow in one album, seven tracks, and barely over 15 minutes, EMUH accomplishes the same.

Opening with “Design A Water Droplet,” EMUH manifests loneliness (and the daydreams everyone will eventually devise to quell that oft-horrendous feeling) into a cheeky indie-dance tune wherein he uses peppy falsetto croons to invite everyone in his personal day dream to join him at Waterworld—a setting that could also be a depiction of Seattle, by the way.

The water-themed foray into kick-drum driven isolation continues on both sides of “I Just Sold My,” featuring another nascent artist named ZOF. The first half of this story finds the listener stranded in the ocean with nothing but a pair of synthetic mermaids to serenade them via sporadic, coruscating synth riffs. 

Then the second half known as the “4AM Mix” is what happens when they’re still floating out there. Those same riffs become fueled with a fire to get back to the docks where the Funktion 1 rig is hot ready. You know when your long-as-hell-day ends at 4AM and you still want to dance? Yeah this is it.

After going through an album built around musically escaping one’s own metaphorical internal struggles it would only be fitting to close it out with a hopeful serenade right? Wrong.

The title track (which is the final track) of the record dives headfirst into dissatisfaction and dissociation. Dance music is discarded as EMUH throws around words like “disgusting” and phrases like “I can’t catch a break” over a sleek, lofi eletronica beat that is equal parts Still Woozy and Gorillaz.

After all, the releases that built the Sub Pop back in the ‘80s and ‘90s weren’t about making anyone feel good. They were about honest emotion. On Dysmorphia EMUH is as honest as he is talented, and that’s what the world needs for now and for always.

Memories aren’t about what happened, memories are about the way you feel. The feelings at that time, in that place, with those people, that’s what makes the facts of what happened worth remembering. 

The feelings are why people head to the dancefloor, and it’s why they should all listen to Michael Beggs new EP, Way You Feel.

For this new three-tracker, the Victoria, BC-based artist headed a bit south towards Seattle, Washington to release on the Beatport-chart-topping label, Feral One Records. Like with the rest of the Feral One Catalog, Way You Feel abandons genre-specificity in search of conceptual glory.

And the concept for this EP is, quite simply, the feels.

The title track harkens back to old-school dancefloor feels. The actual age of the school depends on the listener, but no matter what it’s a welcome blast from the past. The pitched-up vocal sample could go back to the early-aughts hip-hop and the thriving disco beat could go further back still to the time when club culture was born.

“Watch It” follows things up by honoring the feels of the present with an ever-so-funky tech-house groove. The bassline applies an effortless feeling of bounce that will get the feet moving while high-frequency stabs get the hands up high.

Ending the EP with a change of pace, the final track, “Mad Hatter,” takes a different approach to the feels. Instead of directing the dancefloor, this bass house offering is minimal in its approach. It’s an unwritten law of dance music that the more minimal the track, the more outrageous and exuberant the dance moves because you’re making the feels yourself.

No doubt wherever anyone hears this EP the facts of what happened will remain solid in their memory forever. All because of the ways these tracks make you feel.

The dance music history of Spain comes to the foggy metropolis of Seattle on the latest release from Feral One Records, a three-track EP entitled Devil from the Seville-based electronic outfit Space Castorz.

Every new phenomenon within popular music comes with accusations of being “devil music.” It happened with jazz, rock, rap, and now electronic music is taking the hellish title via its association with pure debauchery.

The thing is, Space Castorz have been dancing with the devil for over ten years, and they’ve produced numerous genres during that time including dubstep and drum & bass, now moving towards house and techno.

The Devil EP in particular explores minimal sounds, with a trio of cuts that grab hold of your soul like Lucifer himself is possessing you to dance.

Beginning with “Bombon,” an affected vocal sample comes across like someone is so enthralled with the acid-tinged rhythms that they’re speaking in tongues. Not that anyone would need evil spirits to get them moving to this major groover.

The title track comes second with an equally effective minimal aesthetic, but with an added dose of intrigue through elements like an atmospheric, affected saxophone. The lyrics are clear this time, proudly proclaiming “Shit is the devil,” but with a seductive tone that elucidates this shit is real good.

Then to close, the Devil reveals himself with a shift to tech house on “Don’t Like.” Everything about this track is dark. From the galloping bassline pulled straight from a death metal band’s toolbox, to the haunting choral blast samples placed at the exact right moments, to the ominous breakdown that lets you know the prince of darkness is about to crash this party.

For over a year now, Denni Kindred, a.k.a. Longstocking, has been captaining the ship that is Feral One Records.

From the beginning her philosophy has been clear: pour into every release the unbridled love she feels for her hometown of Seattle while creating space for PNW artists to produce music that honors their own personal connection to the region (and to the dancefloor).

Now Longstocking is back with another release of her own on Feral One. A release that is the most extensive and diverse in the history of the label: her new album, Creating Space.

Seattle is Kindred’s space.

The musical contributions of Seattle and the PNW span all different genres and time periods, and the 16 tracks on Creating Space represent the diversity in sound and persona found within that space. It’s as much an alternative album as it is a dance album.

Kicking things off is “Good Stuff” (the title of which gives an unambiguous hint as to what is coming from the track and the rest of the LP). This track is just pure joy. There is a playful use of samples that plays like a child throwing different colored paints at the wall and ending up with a Jackson Pollack. Simultaneously, different string patterns, from arpeggios to chordal pads, provide a sense of acoustic groundedness, like that same child knew exactly what they were doing from the start.

“A Little Too Much” is another indicative title, communicating the degree of Kindred’s love of Seattle. The combination of rhythmic dulcimer strings and warm, inviting vocals is like the sonic version of a charter boat coasting on Puget Sound at sunset. The kick drum is just a reminder that after the boat docks, everyone is heading to the club.

But remember, this album is not just for the club. And past the halfway mark, “Bombom” comes in to combine hip-hop, breaks, and IDM into one delectable, heady whole. Where does each of these manifest? Hip-hop comes through in even more airtight sampling. Breaks are found in erratic drum patterns. And the synth passages are so gruesome, there is no other genre classification that remotely makes sense besides IDM.

The alternative side of the album reaches its zenith at “Office Window” when Kindred abandons all sense of dance music. But one thing she doesn’t abandon even slightly is a sense of groove. The drum kit glides along a swing beat that Coltrane would be happy to riff over, but instead of bebop tenor saxophone, it’s sound design that is equal parts precise and minimalistic.

To close is another curveball in the form of “Green & Me.” Given the context of this album, it should be clear that “Green” represents the lush, arboraceous environment of Seattle (as well as another plant that is as aromatic as it is combustible), and “Me” is Kindred, who so candidly shares over a serene lo-fi hip-hop beat that there’s no other place that she could ever be.

Usually the only thing any modern electronic act has in common with the legendary, iconic, earth-shattering, boundary-pushing UK rock idols, Queen, is a laughable remix attempt at “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
But in the case of UK-bred dance duo, Freaky Behaviour, their commonality with Queen is attached to the classic space opera, Flash Gordon. Queen, of course, wrote the music for the film adaptation, while Freaky Behaviour produced a stellar new three-tracker entitled Backyard Space Dubs that takes its cues from Flash.
The EP is the latest release on Seattle’s Feral One Records, and it continues the explorative yet fiery reputation the label has built for itself after a year of operations and numerous Beatport #1’s.
Backyard Space Dubs opens with a delightful play on words: “Flash Garden,” and make no mistake, the track itself is just as delightful. Relying on a minimalistic beat, the overlay of different melodic and countermelodic lines not only paints the sonic picture of a flourishing garden in space, but provides a sense of calm purpose that people feel when they’re gardening in real life.
Then comes “A New Planet,” which departs from the garden-party energy in the previous track and moves towards some deep house-suspense in the exploration of this new planet (with the same bravery as the quarterback turned intergalactic hero). The breath samples are like someone gasping out of excitement at their new surroundings as effortlessly expanding synths create a feeling of comfort. This new planet is now home, and the pronounced drop with a strong melodic hook is a note of excitement to delve even deeper.
But that delving leads to the final track, “Zarkov.” Now, in the movie, Dr. Zarkov may have forced Flash to fight Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo, but this time around, he just wants to host a dance party, and the soundtrack he rocks features a jovial call and response between spacey, acid loops that feel like were pulled right of comm archives between alien cruisers.

After decades of technological obsession, humanity is seeing the results. Some frightening, some favorable. And Seattle’s own EMUH explores this dichotomy on his new EP, Dial Tones, out now on Feral One Records.

EMUH is a celebrated producer, musician, and vocalist with releases on Prime Society Records and Space Yacht, alongside remixes for Arnold & Lane and GAWP. He’s also an established engineer and producer under the name Hume Audio, working with clients like Casmalia, Longstocking, Mitch Dodge, Schade, Speaker Honey, and ZOF for some of the biggest labels in the world including majors like Universal, Insomniac, and Columbia.

So it’s safe to say that EMUH has channeled the advance of technology into something fulfilling for himself and beneficial to the world. Still, he is far from ignorant of what this technological integration has meant for society, and, on an individual level, much of this technological integration begins with one item in particular: the phone.

This truth makes it only fitting that the Dial Tones EP begins with its title track, which in turn begins with the sound of a lively conversation at a jovial gathering, one that the narrator is ignoring entirely as he waits for the phone to ring. 

EMUH’s vocals say as much with a smooth tone and light fluctuations in pitch, demonstrating that this person who is waiting for the call is still indeed human. In between the vocals, new bits of melody appear with almost every beat, like little pings to show what he (and everyone else who’s spent an entire party staring at their phone) is missing around them.

Next is “The End Of The World,” and even when the world is burning, the narrator is still staring at his phone, harnessing another frequent experience of the modern world: technological escapism. EMUH captures this naive and avoidant dynamic with musical prowess, honing in on an ascending guitar loop. Clangy and gliding, it’s just that alluring to where (like the endless scroll of social media) something worthwhile and entertaining could be on the other side of the screen, but overall, it’s always just more of the same social loop.

For the third track, “Frog Kiss,” EMUH shifts to alternative rhythms, a less structured approach, and beautiful, dulcet sound design. Dreamy, glittering arpeggios like a night sky unimpeded by clouds and light pollution. Shimmering sheens that envelop the soundscape like a warm summer breeze. Just as when a frog turns into a prince after he feels the love of human connection, when a human puts down their phone, these are the experiences humans can feel.

To close the EP is the party track, “G-Bounce.” In this case, the “G” stands for gangster (not unlike other applications of the letter), and EMUH proves he is all that and more through his version of bassline-driven house music. In a genre that is still in the midst of its heyday, EMUH applies subtlety and intelligence. On the drop, instead of a massive foghorn, he implements a descending tone, one that then slowly rises back in towards the end of the phrase, like a clue at the beginning of a mystery being the key to the solution at the end. This is just one of the mid-range sounds that is oh so groovy, but still carries with it a great deal of emotion.

EMUH - Dial Tones

After over a year of diverse, exciting, and utterly danceable releases, Longstocking’s Feral One Records has proven that the Feral Ones are everywhere. Now for the label’s latest release, three Feral Ones have arisen in a city just south of the label’s home in Seattle: Portland, Oregon.

The three artists in question are: 

Loopacabra, a staple of Portland’s local house community who has opened for prominent headliners like Matroda, Nala, and TOKiMONSTA, among many others, in addition to performing at Burning Man.

[E]mpress, a PDX rapper with the versatility to spit her fierce rhymes over any sound or style. 

Mienne, another stalwart of Portland’s house scene who has shared the stage with VNSSA and Mary Droppinz, and shared the studio with Loopacabra on several occasions.

Together, Loopacabra and [E]mpress produced a track entitled “High Freq Vibe,” which captures the shared old-school energy of rap and dance music. Both of these genres came from an explosion of repressed expression, launching confidence and personality into the air in sonic form.

This new single is an extension of that legacy as Loopacabra’s raucous synth work matches [E]mpress’s precise yet rapid-fire orations. This is the kind of track that is perfect for an outdoor celebration where high vibrations flow without impediment. Then Mienne’s remix takes those same vibrations and refines them into something dark and fluid. Same energy, but this time it’s flowing in the club.

When Victoria BC’s Michael Beggs made his debut on Feral One Records with his EP, Way You Feel, he demonstrated his identity as a music producer who can explore the emotional depth of his audience.

Now with the new remix package for “Mad Hatter,” the final track on the EP, it’s clear that Beggs, deep down, prefers to have his audience going freakin’ crazy on the dancefloor.

The Mad Hatter is the ringleader of the off-their-rocker cast of hooligans in Alice in Wonderland, and these four remixes demonstrate how Beggs leads his audience into total insanity.

Beginning with his own VIP of “Mad Hatter,” Beggs sets the tone of the remixes good and nutty. Where his original captured the power of minimalism, he doesn’t hold anything back on the VIP. The fog horn that lands on the second drop isn’t a fog horn at all. It’s a roar of gruesome energy punctuated by some happy melodic instances that are like makeup and a cruel smile that (used to) keep the crazy at bay.

The second remix takes things in a breakbeat direction. Because of the scattered drums, breaks always have more room for madness. Especially when they’re produced by the Feral One veteran, EMUH. As the Seattle stalwart has done on numerous FO releases before this, EMUH understands the (loony) assignment. Extended vocal samples and forward-moving chords dance around each other while other seemingly random effects like backspins appear out of nowhere. It’s insane. But it totally works.

dopecreature’s deep tech rework is all about controlled madness. The track starts with jittery samples buzzing around the steady and solid four-on-the-floor. A little teaser of the mood swing that’s about to hit. Suddenly an epic synth build-up akin to the unmistakable THX intro rumbles up from nothing before massive amalgams of sound design burst through the seams. It’s hard to believe such a tight-knit beat could contain what was hiding beneath the surface.

Then for the finale, Phrase takes his remix into a direction that is probably most often labeled “mad” in all of dance music: drum & bass. And yet, he was able to find even more madness with circular synths hypnotizing listeners like an undulating pocket watch while the drums exist at the maximum level of erratic. Feral One doesn’t put out much D&B, but when they do, it’s always welcome.

Kamila Toll is an electronic artist with bona fide global reach. She was born in the Czech Republic, and she volleys between two of the biggest hotspots for dance music in the world: Ibiza and Amsterdam (she’s performed at Amsterdam Dance Event as well).


The global reach extends even further when the internet comes into play. She’s shared a mix through Alataj, the collective based out of Florianópolis, Brazil. She’s also a contributor to the mix series, Off Season, from Chicago’s own outfit Seasonal Frequency.


Now her productions are catching up with her live presence as she’s shared music through Los Angeles’s Qwerk Records, Justin Jay’s Fantastic Voyage, and most recently she shared her new EP, Just Another Feeling, on Seattle’s Feral One Records.


The title cut of this two-tracker starts with chunky breaks laid against intricate sound design as if a robot’s artificial heart has just kicked into gear. There are melodic sparks, and then the track builds as the circuits come to life. The reserved yet powerful synth triplets in the breakdown are like the first thoughts going through the robot’s newly-christened mind. Perhaps what’s happening is just another feeling? Or perhaps this feeling means something more.


The next track, “Chico Por Favor,” takes things in a funkier direction after the robot meets a friend at the club. It’s an enthralling melodic track that slowly rises in a very effective way thanks to the seductive Spanish-language vocal samples. The bassline makes it clear the robot is getting down to the groove, but the dissonant synths and melodies feed a sense of excitement and suspense. This is a new feeling for the robot, one that may not make sense in the moment, but one that the robot enjoys.

TKO, aka. Tyler Kromm, is back on Feral One. His first debut on Feral One was a chart smashing collaboration, Oneironaut EP, with Longstocking. This time he is flying solo with his Don’t Rush EP. The first track, Relief, is an electronica bouquet that brings us exactly as the title promises. It has the beats to move you, but also the grace to soothe your soul. The EP title track, Don’t Rush, is a deep house reminder, that life isn’t a sprint. Life is a marathon. So, enjoy the scenery, friends and most of all, the dancing. Every year Feral One opens up their demo submissions for a brief window, and only for Seattle area producers. It’s the world's window opportunity to hear who and what is going down in Seattle right now. 

This third volume has Longstocking kicking it off with their introspective indie vibes, which is often an underlying staple of Seattle music, regardless the genre. Like the track states, it’s a cutie, but with a moody inner coating. 

Next, I.S.H. levels up the energy bringing searing emerald heat with Bring It. It’s a banger Bass House track that will yank you from your thoughts, and toss you onto the dance floor. You’ll hear more from I.S.H. on FO come Winter. 

OG Feral One, EMUH, then leads us from “WTF?” to “F*ck yeah!”, which is a cunning balance this gem of a human has on lock. Fickle falls together in a way that tickles the mind. Its squeaks and tinges of old school will have your legs kicking and your heart swooning. 

Next, Jon Lee, a Seattle institution, goes Deep on the House track, Voyager. The purity of the synths and the tropical droning are magnetic, lulling you to something we now know we needed. 

A fitting transition to good old fashioned proper House is what Move Machine gifts us with Perfume Department. Wafting through, enticing us with the pulsing aroma of yesterday and the precision producing of today. 

Easily one of Seattle’s most talented dance duos, Lee Houser, gets Deep with Propera. While the perks ignite your hips into mode, the steady coolness of the bass keeps you hazed in. Brass stabs briefly wake you, to acknowledge the fact that you never want this jam to end. 

New duo to press their stamp on Seattle underground history is Intemporel Chốc Lát. Their track, I Just Wanted To Let You Know, wraps up this year's volume. Minimal, Deep and looming, this piece lets us know they are here and bringing a fresh heaviness to Seattle's ever divergent soundscape.
