On my way home from work, on the bus, in the evening,
Another commuter sits on down beside me.
I inwardly sigh, cos this guy's mad to talk
And really I'd rather be left alone with my thoughts.
Then he goes off on some rant, and I don't know what to say.
I should call him out, I know, but we get the same bus every day.
So I adopt a conciliatory tone
And respond to his inflammatory remarks with polite ones of my own.
And the more he goes on and on and on and on
The harder I try to find
One little thing to agree on.

Because ...

Being right or being clever
Is not the glue that holds us all together.
Being polite when some idiot's wrong
Is how we all manage to get along.

Ok I feel just a little bit foolish

Until he's already got a seat.
I suppose I should probably just engage
And rebut point by point all the reasons for his outrage
But alas, it's been my experience
That being reasonable is no antidote for nonsense.
Arguments don't work for changing opinions.
They're just little games
For the losing and winning.

I don't want to fight, I just want to be liked.

Same Old Games is the latest from Slane singer songwriter Fergal Riggs following the debut release of Fureys classic The Old Man (released July 2020).

Riggs is no stranger to the studio or stage performing at a number of venues and festivals such as The Salty Dog stage - Electric Picnic. With no gigs lockdown saw Riggs confined to the The Messy Music Room Sessions on youtube.

Going back into the studio once more Riggs new track is a long time in the making. Originally penned in 2014 and put on the shelf, lockdown and a few "Sunday beers" lead to a "mobile phone" demo recording. Riggs was ready to record and with guitarist Geoff Fay Same Old Game was getting the attention it deserved.
Same Old Games has a great country sound with a hard edge from Riggs lyrics and vocals. Rock meets country Same Old Games is positive with an upbeat melody.

Riggs sings about getting away from the Rat Race, youth not knowing there a number and wishing to be with friends. Straight to the point and poetic Riggs sings I want to sit on a hill watch the sun say goodbye to the day, set fire to the sky as it goes on its way

From Friggsy's Messy Music Room comes a cover of the now Irish Classic Passage West by the AMAZING John Spillane. Passage West tells the story of Love but also Irish struggles with Poverty, hunger and emigration...in search of a better life.

As always with John's music the language is colurful and descriptive and conjures in the mind perfectly what Passage West would have looked like in the 1800's as the last town many Irish people would ever see as they board ships to take them to "Far off harbors across the sea"
