This piece was written in memory of the composer and educator John Maxwell Geddes (1941-2017.) It takes inspiration from
2 works: "Postlude for Strings" by John Maxwell Geddes and "Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety" by Morton Feldman.
Feldman's piece was written in fond memory of his childhood piano teacher to whom he credited entirely for his musical successes.
There is a distinct flute motif; a falling major third which is prominent throughout the piece. The motif is referenced throughout this
piece by the trumpet to signify the impact John had as an educator.
The second piece, "Postlude for Strings," is a statement piece written by John in reaction to funding cuts being made to music and
the arts. In his piece, the musicians gradually leave the stage until only the conductor is left to finish the piece. The piece sends
a clear message to audience members about the future of music and the arts if they are not supported.
This piece begins with an introduction on the vibraphone which sets the harmonic language for the piece. It is joined by the
violin and the oboe, the two instruments which John played himself. Gradually, musicians will walk on stage begin to play
until the whole orchestra is present. This is to demonstrate the immense musical impact that John had on so many
people’s lives and pay tribute to the work he done throughout his life.
The piece concludes with a solo violin playing a quotation of the closing theme of John's "Postlude for Strings."

Trees appear silent, but scientists have discovered they are communicating closely with each other. This all happens underground through a fungal network growing around and inside their roots which scientists have coined "The Wood Wide Web." Dying trees may share their resources with nearby trees to increase their chances of survival. A tree that has been attacked by a virus may release a chemical signal to warn other trees to raise their defences. However it can be used selfishly by trees such as the black walnut which spreads toxic chemicals to sabotage rivals. 
This piece takes inspiration from trees secretly sharing and communicating among themselves beneath our feet. The glissando motif is passed around the three instruments to help them work together to create small snippets of melodic cells. At the end of the piece, I have created a sound world which represents what I imagine talking trees may sound like!

you know i'm not that good with putting words after words
i try hard but it just doesn't work 
maybe i'm lazy or just not talented at writing words whatever that talent word means
i guess casually talking over a few slightly flat guitar notes and recording it on an average phone mic with loads of background noise doesn't count as a proper song, does it? 
i don't know 
or maybe my inability to write down words shouldn't be the topic of my first words

anyway i'll stop small talking an here's a question i wanted to ask 

finding all the way up and down from my arteries and veins and capillaries, how did you end up there? 
love isn't easy they say but i think i found it

they also say love is not in your hear, it's in your mind. 
so...
would scientists criticize these words? 

i don't know, fuck it. 

i'll just speak, this is why i shouldn't be writing song.

World Premiere of 'All these died in faith' commissioned by Continuum & conducted by Harry Guthrie on November 8th 2019 at a concert of Remembrance in the chapel of Trinity College Cambridge. The Latin words were chosen from the First World War Memorial Wall at the east end of Trinity Chapel, Hebrews 11:13. 
'All these died in faith, not having received promises, but be beholding them afar off and saluting them and confessing that they are pilgrims and strangers on earth.'

A track I've been trying to finish up for a while now. The main inspiration was to try and get some Skyharbor vibes with the contrast between the reverby/ambient parts and the heavier parts.
