The word "angel" is a foreign word, the preceding Greek word means "messenger" and can be used of supernatural powers as well as of humans. Humans can also be referred to as "angels" in the Bible (Malachi 2:7; Mark 1:2).

When speaking of humans, the motif of ascension is unproblematic. Piety and one's own striving for virtue can be symbolized by the image of the ascent, the ladder, as is then the case in the history of art.
