Our sixth VA compilation continues in the collective spirit at the heart of Pressure Dome; here taking its fullest form. The first of its kind in the label catalogue, ‘Two [Is Greater Than] One’ sees a selection of PD regulars and friends of the label put their heads together across eight atmospheric tracks, equally as suited to the club as to solo listening. 

Those who have followed the label for a while will be no stranger to the comp’s first collaborator. Human Resources teams up with London dub techno specialist, Keplrr, on ‘Spring’: a mood-led composition where the impact is contained in atmosphere. Fragmented drum breaks are engulfed by airy synth pads and punctuated by a dancehall-indebted rhythm that marches at 90BPM. ‘Yuppel’ welcomes Noods Radio mainstay Sid Quirk aka Keppel into the mix. He is joined by label boss, Yushh, on a ruminative percussive tool, guided by cavernous drums that fabricate a vivid, immersive environment. With the guidance of Brighton’s Caldera, the journey continues with Süss Choc. The reverb-laden synth plucks on ‘evoke water droplets, and hallucinatory details echo around them to create the illusion of being in a mountainous cove.

Delay Grounds – an audiophile in the truest sense of the word – is next to take the baton. Together, he and Yushh take it up a notch on ‘Telomere’ – a full-bodied club-ready track packed with glitchy chords and giddy drums. A gnarly, Pariah-esque breakdown segues into the track’s second wind where pitched-up vocal chops accelerate it to the compilation’s energetic climax. With the help of London drum specialist, Syz, ‘Fuzbidun’ keeps our feet firmly on the dancefloor. Breakbeats are chopped and rearranged, flitting between double and half time whilst a distorted mid-bass roughens things round the edges, prepping the ground for the compilation’s move to a more inorganic feel.

Bristol don, Forever, joins Yushh next on ‘Passing Notes’ – a groove-driven club track where skittish percussion ricochets from side to side, so palpable it tempts the touch. ‘Crash Bash Party At BUFOs’ is no different. The link-up between Delay Grounds and dance music’s stalwart of musique concrète, Wordcolour, is completely idiosyncratic to both artists: the perfect combination of found-sound percussion and skillfully rehashed vocal samples. It’s up to two PD mainstays – Roy Mills and Human Resources – to close proceedings. A chugging rhythm bubbles under the surface of ‘Sycophantasy’, sending us on a dubbed-out trip before picking the pace back up again.

For Animalia’s 11th release, Animalia welcomes Ukrainian producer Volodymyr Gnatenko (@gnatenko) with his EP AbiaA. 

Known for his progressive, trance-tinged releases and live sets, AabiA builds on Gnatenko’s lush soundscaping with five new tracks, including a remix of fellow Ukrainian producer Shjva’s Usu and an additional digital sixth bonus track with Ilya Semaskevich. Deep, atmospheric and emotional, the EP spans dreamy synth lines meshed with breaks, both rolling and downtempo. I first encountered Volodymyr’s sound at a party in Berlin last April, where he played a transformative live set that stayed with me long after. AbiaA perfectly reflects what resonated with me then and still - the entrancing and immersive world he conceives is a rare skill in electronic music, but one I endlessly seek.

Berlin based Arttu has been dropping his dusty fat beats across numerous techno labels including Philpot, Clone and 4Lux for a few years but it was 2016’s track ‘Hoodies’ on Arttu’s own imprint Cyblo that caught the attention of Accidental label boss Matthew Herbert (and which remains firmly in Herbert’s record bag). Arttu was invited onto the Accidental Jnr roster and has delivered a chunk of techno with so much swing it made Donkey Kong blush.

Arttu takes the most simple of jazz bass hooks and loops across a rigid kick, it’s when those hats kick in that the groove goes fucking wild. The presence of US native Roberto Q Ingram on vocals brings a full Detroit gangster flavour to the party. Initially Arttu and Roberto had an idea to record a simple and sweaty track with Roberto on the mic and Arttu at the control of some dusty old machines. The result, ‘Bass Trakk’ is exactly that: Roberto dropping lyrics over a raw beat and a massive bassline. The EP is rounded off with a deep bit of techno ‘Debris’ with all the trappings of the darkest hour of a Berlin winter in which it was recorded.

трип presents ‘locus error’, a new double vinyl concept album. Moving beyond the scope of the traditional, arbitrarily compiled VA, трип's conceptual approach brings together a range of artists around a uniting theme, supplying a sense of cohesion and narrative thrust.

Like Noel Saavedra’s accompanying artwork, the narrative is vibrant yet nightmarish, a vision of classic trance music, including its psy side, refracted through трип's fearless, oddball aesthetic. 

Nina Kraviz sets the tone with 'test'. Kyoka’s ‘link’ coaxes you in with suggestive murmurs from all angles like an auditory hallucination. Ryan James Ford and ANTIGONE make label debuts, while SOPHIE and Juliana Huxtable unite for the first time as Analemma - a formidable pairing with an abstract offering, merging trance elements, metallic and corporeal sound design with vintage euphoria.

трип misfits PTU do their best to upset your sense of time and meter with two modern psy trance interpretations. Carlota contributes the nervously optimistic title track. Alan Backdrop’s hair and pulse raising yet classy ‘nizaj’ clears the way for the grand finale: X-Dream’s murky, mesmeric and minimalistic genre classic ‘superintelligence’. On the digital a ‘clever mix’ that was previously unreleased outside Japan will be released. Masters sit alongside newcomers to the form, on an LP for dancers deep in a fugue state.
