Vortex Traks Podcast 18 by Annechoic

We were first introduced to Annechoic at a brokntoys x Vortex Traks label night. Good times, great memories and what a DJ set that was. We are pleased to hear more of it now in the latest podcast.

Active since the early 2000s, for much of her career Annechoic has operated in the shadows, balancing her time between her work in film post-production and running
the highly regarded extinct cult label Audiofugitives with Schizolectric since 2012. She has also produced a secret arsenal of music that we have only gotten a glimpse at on her own label and more recently with a release for Brokntoys. Alongside this her recent DJ sets have been highly regarded for her intelligent flow
across electro, techno and ambient.

Both as a producer and DJ, Annechoic wishes to explore the relationships between rhythm and melody primarily within electro but not confined to it. Her music ranges from soft ambient themes all the way through to darker syn- thetic sounds with an emphasis on the emotional reaction from the listener.

Today we have Christopher Lombardo as our guest. He is a composer, sound designer, and art director from Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- A lot to unpack in this question. 3 artists come to mind. When I was 11 years old, I was awakened to music and its power by Slipknot, which eventually lead to a love of extreme metal (death, black, doom, etc - metal was my first true love and that still shows). It was a chance encounter with a dude a full grade older than me. He walks up to me in Spanish class and says "here you need this" ... and hands me the Iowa record. They say life boils down to a few moments. This was one of them.
When I was 15, NIN inspired me to take production more seriously and that music didn't need to revolve around guitars and be angry all the time. Emotion was okay, and the spectrum of emotion did more for the music than just adolescent rage.
Around the age of 19, my group of college friends began experimenting with psychedelics, and coincidentally was around the time I stumbled into the Warp records. I think these two factors took me away from song and rock music completely. Prior to that I was still very much cemented in a "song" mentality. Squarepusher rocked me to my core and had me reevaluating all of my musical experiences and understandings I held at that point. I remember it feeling like a dam of inspiration had just burst - I didn't have to make traditional dance music, but I didn't have to be in a traditional band either.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- A small remix EP of my last release "Cephalgian" will be wrapped up once the final tracks are complete. I'm very much looking forward to Mitoma and Daed's interpretations, but will also feature some new tracks. I am working on a follow up EP but that has no concrete details to announce.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- These days I find myself listening mostly to stuff outside of electronic music. I'm heavily into soul, folk, funk during my work day, actually. I find myself just enjoying the music vs analyzing (which is what happens when I listen to electronica (or metal)). While I was in the last round of production for Cephalgian, I was exclusively listening to acoustic guitar based music because it was so far away from what I was doing. The simplicity of just 3 chords and a voice is just fascinating to me - it's something I could never do.
There is so much music being created these days, and it is available to us so readily, it is harder and harder for me to sit down and connect with it.
Some recent discoveries or heavily repeated listens are:
AI Lover, Justin Townes Earle, Tonto's Expanding Head Band, Dave Van Ronk, Zamilska, Portal, TENGGER, Objekt, Skee Mask, Ital Tek, Street Sects, Spectral Voice, Bongripper, Junior Kimbrough, Dr John and Dragged Into Sunlight.

What inspires you now to create music?

- In my younger days I think I would've tried to say something profound here.
As an old man with more perspective? I've had an instrument in hand since I was 8 years old and  I don't think I'd be the same person without the music. It's an escape, I think about it all day, every day, and am in love with all it brings to my life. The tinkering, the artistic demands of crafting a track, the nerdiness, the unending search for something that's just out of reach, that deep understanding with other musicians, the hours and hours of debate with my friends, the gear collection.... the obsession.  I could go on and on - simple fact is, I fucking love music. I want to be part of it and live it and breathe it... that's more profound than inspiration to me.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- My setup is forever in flux...especially my live performance gear. Since 2008 I've been producing almost exclusively on the computer but recent years have seen some eurorack addiction.

Nos vamos a Barcelona para presentarles al siguiente artista invitado, su nombre es Alejandro Robles, más bien conocido como Low Tide aka Húmedo, y es el encargado de firmar la numero 38 de la serie.

Alejandro nació en 1976 en la ciudad donde reside, aspecto que ayudó a educarlo con un amplio abanico de estilos y corrientes en cuanto a la música. Su trayectoria profesional comienza en el año 2000 en varios circuitos de la ciudad Condal. También adquirió conocimientos en la organización de eventos y programación de artistas y protocolos a seguir, gestionando su promotora (Grupo La Fresca) y trabajando para el booking del sello (Eardrum Records), entre 2003 y 2007.

Una amplia gama de estilos llenan sus recuerdos desde sus inicios hasta el día de hoy, donde sus sets inyectan Boogie, New Beat, Pop 80's, Synth Wawe, Electro 80's, Disco, Italo-disco, Electro y Electrónica en general. Con todos ellos ha pasado por espacios tales como Space, Danzatoria, Oven, La Cova, Fellini, Catwalk, Souvenir, KGB, Macarena Club, BLVD, Freedonia, Luv, Mint, Switch, Mad Barcelona, 33/45/45/ 33, La Cova d'en Choroi (Menorca) y más.

Actualmente bajo sus diferentes proyectos personales (Low_tide, Húmedo y Axel Roures) gestiona LTProjects así como los eventos, Follone Follone y W.A.N.B.D.

London-based Irish DJ, Gavin Mac Donagh, AKA @Gamadon , has been DJing for over 20 years and been an avid Electro fan since the 90s. Gamadon started playing Electro out in Vancouver, Canada in 1999 with the Pound Recordings crew under the alias Dex of Hazzard. He has also promoted and DJ’d at several underground electronic music nights in Ireland and Bermuda. This special mix is comprised of only tracks that appeared on the 808 Box set by Fundamental Records.

She is currently based in Nijmegen (NL).
