Selectors Assemble bring you yet another fantastic premiere this month - this time a track from WheelUP's debut album titled 'Good Love' which is coming out this Friday on Tru Thoughts records (PRE-ORDER on Bandcamp). On this track titled 'Rise Above' WheelUP (Danny Wheeler) collaborates with the Drum & Bass duo Pola & Bryson, who also go by their alter ego Abacus.  One for the bruk heads for sure!

‘Good Love’ is the debut album from WheelUP. In the words of the artist: “Good Love is something that I generally want to see in the world. This LP is my pursuit of broken beat excellence”. ‘Good Love’ is an amalgamation of WheelUP’s history and success, a record that places him alongside legends within the scene such as IG Culture and Marc Mac, as well as contemporaries EVM128 and Neue Grafik. “The future is not yet defined, but it is currently called broken beat, bruk or the West London Sound”, WheelUP preaches.

Hot off the release of his acclaimed “Isles In Indigo” LP, Denver, CO-based producer and visual artist RUMTUM (aka John Hastings) makes a swift return to Bastard Jazz with a remix for fellow Denverites Ramakhandra. Ramakhandra is a band that creates a mind bending fusion of future jazz and hypnotically free psychedelia, all with a rhythmic throughline that combines seemingly disparate instruments, influences, and sounds into a magically cohesive experience. Having created artwork for remixes of the band in the past, RUMTUM takes “Haku,” originally an 11-minute exploratory jam from their self-titled album, turning it into a stunning atmospheric piece that utilises the band’s signature harp sound to full extent, alongside whispers of vocal samples that float atop new bass and drum lines. The rich soul of the original remains, but the remix places it in an entirely new context.

Ramakhandra’s “Haku (RUMTUM Remix)” is out on Bastard Jazz June 3rd.

Just Know (ft. Henry Wu & Venna)

Emerging first as an instrumental, Soak It Up grew surprisingly quickly. Improvising at the piano always leads somewhere fruitful for me. The original piano recording was noisy, but in a good way with the sound of the piano hammers and fingers on the keys really suggesting a warm, cosy musical situation. The track starts out with a homemade sample and opens out into vocals from Kojey Radical which describe an ongoing relationship in turmoil. There’s love in the song but also recognition of the gripes and annoyances on each side. It was a real vibe putting it together.
