The ‘How’s That?’ EP showcases Fiesta Soundsystem’s hardcore and rave influences, bolted together with UK club and bass rhythms; from the acid-tinged roller ‘Foundation’, and the warping title track, which echoes the moment when UKG transformed into dubstep; to the pummelling Amens of ‘Phlso’, and the sparse breaks of ‘Pych 130’.

What better way to start the new year than with New Dawn, the Figure premiere of Japanese techno exporter and groove connaisseur Wata Igarashi.

His psychedelic grooves are currently some of the most sought after material out there, shimmering with life, richly laden with crystalline arps and swirling synth lines.

On his first outing for Figure hi finely detailed compositions merge into a sound that is equally dense as it becomes wildly mesmerizing. Loops stacked on top of each other for maximum effect, building a sense of depth and connection, and developing their captivatingness over each track’s full runtime.

Igarashi uses strict linear progression and a set of vibrant ideas in order to create four hypnotic pieces that range from rumbling low-end bass to propulsive and driving acid to rattling percussion and finally round out the package with some trippy off-kilter rhythms.

Barely a year old and already well-established, Shall Not Fade’s bassier sublabel Time Is Now dishes up a plate of deliciously fresh forward beats, from slick R&B vocal pieces to tracks which pack a punch. The six-track compilation features familiar faces from previous releases, with some featuring artists new to the label. 

Freddie Baker, releasing under the moniker Bakey, got his first ever label release on Time Is Now last year and has been non-stop since, recently copping a spot on the Rinse FM Garage Hour. His offering for Allstars Vol.2 is a weighty stepper built on a growling bassline. ‘Dismantle’ knocks you off your feet, luckily the second track (a collab between Interplanetary Criminal and Hypho) lays low in the intro before hitting you with a deep, wobbling drop, chopped up vocals skipping across the staccato rhythm.  While relative newcomer Interplanetary Criminal (Zachary Bruce) has specialised in pretty upbeat garage, Hypho (Louis Richardson) has been experimenting on the bassier side of club music for nearly a decade, and his dubstep influence shines through in the depth of ‘Talbot Road’. DJ Crisps - Julio Soewandi - closes out the A-side with a comparably bouncy ‘Ready Salted’, dropping a warped bassline for added flavour. Soewandi is joined by South London singer-slash-producer Ell Murphy on ‘Arms Around’, Murphy providing soulful vocals on a slightly dubbed out instrumental - Murphy, one half of UKG duo NITEWORK, lends a proper garage classic vibe to this one. Joining them on the B-side is London-based Mark Ramsey (AKA Yosh), just a month after the release of his debut EP on Time Is Now. ‘Over and Out’ uses adventurous sound design to build a cheeky roller. Topping off the star-studded comp is Copenhagen’s own Main Phase. Adam Schierbeck uses this alias to put out high-octane breakbeat garage and homages to the 90s rave - ‘Special Occasion’ twists and contorts, its monumental bass and MC samples an ode to soundsystem culture.

Shall Not Fade’s Season Series imprint hosts Brighton-based DJ and producer Gavinco (Joe Newham) for its first long-play release - Dumont LP; a mellow yet rhythmic collection of jazz house explorations. Gavinco - real name This is his second LP in a year, and blends organic instrumentation with clubby samples. 

Dumont is a polished piece of work, smoothly produced and flowing from song to song imperceptibly like the pianist improvising to entertain punters in an uptown jazz bar. The title track is all swinging, dusty sax scattered with sharp natural keys, although the rough and ready undercurrent suggests something clubbier. It prepares you for the harder ‘Electronic Feeling’ that takes similar jazz stylization but ups the house beat; a bassiness builds into the end of the A-side with ‘Transit’ centring around saxophone loops and elevated percussion that gets hips moving. This is stripped right back for wistful guitar and soulful female vocals in ‘Sweetness’ - ‘Carry On’ acts as a meeting point between this and the danceable rest of the record, summer vibes passing through it as the pulse of house influence builds. Newham plays with Herbie Hancock-style flute trills during ‘Fusion’, vintage funk guitar rising hazily from the rhythm like a mirage. If ‘Fusion’ evokes sun-baked Balearic beaches, ‘Dévouée’ is the gentle tide cooling them, fading chord stabs mirroring placid sax. Digital bonus track ‘Estrella’ carries a layered brass section, building to a euphoric drop - though taking a sound palette from candlelit jazz clubs, this is sunshine music.
