There is something to be said for the things in life that happen slowly. It’s why we have slow cookers, why we can take videos in slow motion on our phones; we crave the indulgence of spending time, of allowing ourselves to consume, and be consumed by, something that demands to be felt in different ways, over and over. 

Allow yourself, then, to understand the name of Frida’s new release as an instruction on how it is to be experienced. Lower yourself into Slowly, and B side, I Want It All, as you would lower yourself into a steamy bath. The guitar jangles on like bathroom lights through the mist, phantom voices echo over each other, and indeterminate time passes as you blissfully sink deeper and deeper down into this dewy, delectable pop. 

Because yeah, it is pop music, even if it tastes a little funky. Turn it over in your mouth a couple more times, chew slowly and savour. 

Since forming in 2013, Frida, as a live band, have cut their teeth on festival slots in Singapore, hotel rooms in India, and a regular diet of gigs up and down Brunswick Street.  Only in a live context is the music to be consumed suddenly; as indulgent as it is, there is no better way to absorb the dense, intense six-piece sound than all at once.

The Slowly/I Want It All single is a thrilling tease - a little something to signify a new chapter, and to hint at what is to come. Recorded by members Lewis Coleman and Henry Jenkins, at DIY paradise and Frida home base Wyall Style studios, this release reflects a mature, considered brand of absurd pop music. You’re gonna love it.

Aptly titled, Frida’s new single Limbo is the musical floating point between any number of different states – is it pop or soul? Dark or hopeful? 1976 or 2016? 

Late in 2015, Frida descended into their home studio in an evasive Brunswick side street (Wyall Style) to write and produce their newest and most mature work yet. Restive and rhythmic, Limbo is a result of these sessions.

Limbo dives headfirst into the agony of waiting; the lyric describes teetering on the edge of a decision and everything that resides in the space between choices. Limbo rises from, and descends back into, a melting pot of texture; driving guitar lines, symphonic synths and Eilish Gilligan’s honey-sweet vocals combine to create a simmering concoction of influence and experience. Think Leon Bridges versus Florence and the Machine at the crossroads between this universe and the next.

Recorded, and produced by the band themselves, Limbo is a deeply thoughtful release that reflects serious potential within Frida. The group have just come off the back of a hugely successful 2015, with the launch of their imprint record label Wyall Style in collaboration with HopeStreet Recordings, and their single Slowly garnering play and praise from both Triple J and Double J alike.

Melbourne dream pop outfit Frida have announced the release of their brand new single Everything (Is You). The hypnotic offering is the first taste of their upcoming EP I Want In Your Head, out November 25th.

Recorded and produced by the gang in their new Collingwood studio (shared with Plastic, The Cactus Channel and Alex Lahey), Everything screams and soothes, consumes and envelops the listener in its bizarre, smitten world. Characterised by mechanical synths, a heaving groove and harmonic, soaring vocals, the song builds a home somewhere between your soul, psych, and electronic pop records. The chorus - “Stay here til the morning, everything is you” - is simple, but the delivery encompasses a desperation that unnerves...Everything is a friendly nod to Mac Demarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and early Tame Impala, with angelic echoes of Florence Welch and Bat For Lashes.

So far, 2016 has been a big year for Frida. In between writing, recording, and returning to Singapore to play a string of festival shows, they also released their second single Limbo, garnering play and praise from Spotify, Triple J and Double J alike.
