Montréal born and raised zi! is a lifelong music lover & dancer. An avid digger, they are inspired by varying sounds and styles, adapting their craft to what their ear responds to. zi!'s work with online radio show and mix series Missed Connections allows them to further explore their diverse musical tastes by curating unique and thoughtful sets from friends around the world. With friends locally, they formed the queer DJ collective Flush, which has been organizing musically forward, community centered events for nearly 2 years. zi! is quickly becoming a mainstay in Montréal's vibrant underground scene.

"When I prepare a mix, I often pick one idea and expand on it for the whole session. This one explores a combination of bass, breaks, percussion, with elements of dub and world music. This sound just makes my body dance; it has something akin to the beats I grew up dancing to, melded with the more forward thinking production I find myself leaning into on today's dancefloors. The 38th release of katharsis and our final release of 2023 is the prodigious compilation "Embracing Darkness, Absorbing Light" featuring a vast array of artist beloved by the label. Throughout the grandiose line-up of the 36 tracks, the listener is absorbed by various differing interpretations of the theme outlined in the title of the album. Some of the invited artist went full into introverted progressions and meditative sounds, while others focused on aggressive rhythms or anthemic melodies. But even though the styles and techniques of the songs differ from each other, the artists seem to have some commonality in their sonic palettes that binds it all together in a mutual love for music as a healing force of nature <3

"the inspiration for this mix came from a special afterparty where i DJ’d after a rave i had co-organized in montreal last october. i had spent most of the night dealing with the cops and got a fine for noise. once at the afterparty, i got to channel my frustration into music; i played dub techno for hours. to me, the airy but deep grooves of that music provide space for both introspection and release. hope you feel it too."
