My Vine (demo)

The song first started during pandemic when I was seeing a lot of posts about "Don't Text Your Ex!" and that kind of thing. A lot of people were bored and lonely.

So I wrote this song as a lighthearted take on a slightly toxic breakup and then the conflict of staying away for good.

In the past few years I've been thinking about priorities and realizing that one thing I value highly is peace... peace that comes from what kind of vibes and people I allow into my life. 

Hopefully you can relate... occasionally there is something or someone that you have to let go of, for your own peace and sanity…

First Day of Rain

Walking home through my neighborhood, humming Amazing Grace.  The dark brown fake wood paneling is crumbling down from the church on 21st.  There's garbage piled high, and a little girl's clothes, a plastic shopping cart left turned over in the road, and it smells like piss and mercy on this, the first day of rain.  The man in the yellow is twitching as he waits for the walk; he ran out of crack again.  Old Lenny thinks there's a wedding and he's giving away the bride- red bow tie!  The old folks say, "Hello!" and talk of yesterday's news:  Oraida finally died, that old Siamese cat too.  God bless their souls, and mercy on this, the first day of rain.  Oscar's is now a hipster bar, packed to the gills on any night, all white.  Across the street at Starbuck's, a prostitute prays for smokes and better luck.  But at the end of the strip mall, they are talking in tongues.  They sing to canned music with exuberant lungs.  And it smells like rain and mercy on this, the first day of rain.

August Song: I'm sitting very still, high on a great wide bright green landfill, in the sun.  We hoped we could cover up all of our need and shame and empty, just fill it up, and now, the Garden of Eden is just a pile of stuff.  Fear of falling, fear of knowing we're never going to feel completely whole.  I'm running fast away from the city of fallen angels, freeway gleaming in the sun.  Gulping reality, choking on cars, they push as far as I can see, and they drop off the edge into empty.  Fear of stillness, fear of knowing we're never going to feel completely whole.  Last night I dreamt of You.  You were gorgeous and real and You were gleaming just like God's Son.  I tried to run to You, but my feet grew roots deep in the soil, my hands too, but the sky was unfathomably blue.  Fear of floating, fear of knowing we're never going to feel completely whole.

Someone should take a photograph of us- riding through the park on tall-bikes, laughing 'till we almost pee, and falling down on purpose in the snow.  Oh... we are so simple.  Look at us, we're bright and shiny!  The stars are huge, the cars are tiny, and all our fear's gone into hiding.  And it smells like cucumbers in the air, frozen everywhere... we are so simple.  Nothing's gonna change right now, nothing's gonna change right now, nothing's gonna change right now.  I'm not gonna change from how I am right now
