What if Satan's the Good Guy? a concept album commenting on organised religion. 
‘Innocence’ explores the vulnerability of childhood and how predatory operators can take advantage of this. A musically sweet song with a very dark message, it draws on the Catholic Church’s paedophile priest scandal, amongst others. 
The chorus lyric is sung twice in succession to emphasise the message and employs the phrase ‘Blue remember’d hills’ which was taken from AE Houseman’s ‘A Shropshire Lad’ - we are a Shropshire band! Our lyrics also reference how abused children are often trapped emotionally and carry these emotions into adulthood. 
The outro to the song segues into ‘Hush Little Baby’, a traditional lullaby with origins in the southern United States, a folk song whose essence is the soothing of a child with the promise of gifts. The final note of ‘Innocence’ is dropped by Julian turning the tuning peg on his guitar as the note rings out and Amy follows the note down, this is symbolic of a moral descent and darkens the bleak message in this song further.

The story told by our album What if Satan's the Good Guy? starts right back at the very beginning (literally) with ‘Vis Majeure’ (Major Force). Vis is an instrumental piece that combines musical representations of The Big Bang with a spoken narrative derived from texts lifted from the book of Genesis that we have changed from statements to questions; we have mixed the scientific with the religious. We have also made reference to the simplicity of life in its rawest form, the binary notion of pleasure and pain.

‘Empty Chairs’ centres on bereavement. It is essentially a love song inspired by a chance meeting with an elderly couple (both in their 90s) on a train when this album was being devised. Conversation with this incredibly open and warm couple showed them to be acutely aware of their mortality and the loneliness that the loss of the other would entail. They were only sat opposite for a few stops and upon leaving, the chairs in which they sat remained empty for the remainder of the journey, a metaphor from which the song title is derived.

What if Satan's the Good Guy? a concept album commenting on organised religion. 
‘The Awakening’ turns to adolescence with all its confusion, eroticism, and contradictions. We start to see Nat questioning that which was previously accepted without challenge, religion has taught that intimacy is dirty, but nature is screaming a different message altogether. Musically we have gone for a thumping, sleaze rock approach with a strong riff, the lyrics starting to hint at defiance. 
The musical breakdown prior to the final chorus - a duel between the bass and guitar - represents Nat staring down the established church for the first time but employing immature, underdeveloped arguments. The establishment (bass) rattles out the same riff each time (except one where we changed it up a little), Nat’s response is to parrot this back initially but then positions a counterargument, the guitar trill overrunning as impatience takes hold until Nat eventually loses control and ends the argument in exasperation.

‘Invaders’ sees Nat dealing with critical illness and questioning both God’s inaction and Nat’s own immoral behaviour throughout life so far, linking past behaviour to illness as a punishment from God.
Invaders is in 2 parts, both musically and as a narrative – Part 1 describes the onset of illness and eventual remission, Part 2, a relapse. This song was written around the time of the global Covid Pandemic in 2019 and references this lyrically and musically.

The song title is derived from Samuel Beckett’s famous play ‘Waiting for Godot’ which explores the futility and meaningless of human existence. Our song is critical of the Church’s position on gay marriage and the inherent hypocrisy of this when compared to its other teachings. It was written in response to the Church of England’s General Synod yet again rejecting a proposal to permit gay couples to marry in church.

‘The Banality of Evil’ Part 1 sets the overall theme of the album unambiguously. Banality is a dark song about exactly that which the title suggests, a phrase first coined by Hannah Arendt to describe Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Holocaust in WW2, at his post war trial in Jerusalem. 
The song is in 2 parts and is musically schizophrenic, varying from sweet melody in Part 1 to a metal theme in Part 2 to reflect this very trait in the characters it describes.

What if Satan's the Good Guy? a concept album commenting on organised religion. 

‘I’ve stopped Talking to God’ tests faith through exposure to atrocity. 400,000 Hungarian Jews were murdered by the Nazis in just a few weeks in the death camps, and it is estimated that over 2 million people were exterminated in such places in total (many millions more were murdered by SS death squads across the theatre of conflict). The depraved levels of cruelty routinely practiced in these camps would test the faith of many, and the title of this song is a quote taken directly from a  death camp survivor when describing her reaction to a particularly despicable act that she witnessed.
The lyric ‘never to return someday’ describes the reality faced by many holocaust survivors upon liberation in 1945, that they could not return home as their homes no longer existed (or had been appropriated by others) and that the end of the Nazis did not mean the end of antisemitism. We have used the term ‘holy burned’ in the chorus lyric which is the literal translation of ‘holocaust’.

What if Satan's the Good Guy? a concept album commenting on organised religion. 
Nat is now openly questioning the whole concept of faith and organised religion and this song, from its title to its lyrics, reflects this.
We have used the word ‘fugacity’ in our lyrics, a chemistry term that describes how readily a substance transitions from one state to another, the idea being that this reflects Nat’s position relative to faith at this point in life. 
Our referencing the music of George and Ira Gershwin (I Got Rhythm) in Sky Magician started out as a bit of fun when jamming the song out. ‘I Got Rhythm’ is about a joyful and positive attitude and the joy that music and rhythm can bring to one’s life, so we decided to include it as a counter to this album’s overwhelmingly dark message!
Adding an additional dimension to the song is an outro rap and we’re guessing that this may be the only song ever written that uses the word ‘colostomy’ as a lyric, we’ll let you decide the context.

Shoot the Messenger – What If Satan’s the Good Guy?
A chilling look into the dark corners of online radicalisation, Shoot the Messenger tells the story of a young man who is socially isolated, vulnerable and consumed by self-loathing. Labelled an ‘Incel’ - Involuntary Celibate – he is easily manipulated by bad actors online, developing a hatred for society and his political masters. He embraces the belief that violence is the answer—culminating in an assassination attempt on a prominent right-wing politician. But in the end, he becomes just another pawn in a larger game, silenced before he can even understand the full weight of his actions.
