Recorded at the Western end of Tegel Airport - where the airplanes fly over landing. The interesting part starts at 00'50: after the flyover you can hear the sound of the wake vortex - or wing tip vortex - which is a trail of turbulent air following the airplane. The wake vortex creates a very subtle swish and rustle that pervades the whole area. It is not always so articulate and continuous as it was this time.

Bissingen was visited by R. M. Schafer and his team in 1975, in the course of 'Five Village Soundscapes', a research tour through Europe. The Canadian scientists interviewed local people about the sounds of everyday life, they drew sound maps, and they also made several field recordings (for further info on this project see http://www.sfu.ca/~truax/FVS/fvs.html). I knew Bissingen from these recordings only, besides some more recent recordings from Helmi Järviluoma and her colleagues, who visited the same European villages in 2000 (see http://6villages.tamk.fi/). So I was very curious to find out what it sounds like, now.

From July, 19th, to Octobre, 19th in 2014, there is a pretty fine sound art exhibiton at the Château d'Avignon en Camargue. Titled 'Le domaine des murmures # 1', several site-specific sound works turn the parc and some of the outbuildings into a pulsating soundscape. Visitors are invited to explore the works of twelve different artists. See http://www.chateaudavignon.fr/exposition/le-domaine-des-murmures-1.html for further information. In this particular recording, you will notice sounds from different works by Julien Clauss, Emma Dusong, Arno Fabre, and Franck Lesbros, the drone of the water pump from the nearby machine hall as well as the sonic contributions of several unidentified crickets, and, last but not least, the total absence of sound from an installation by Emmanuel Lagarrigue in the machine hall.

February 5, 2016 marks 100 years since the founding of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, and thus the beginning of Dada. To mark the occasion, Cities and Memory: Dada Sounds applies the techniques and practices of Dada to field recordings from around the world. I also contributed one field recording and its corresponding Dadaist remix …according to Tristan Tzara’s method How to Make a Dadaist Poem.

Urban square Nauener Platz in Berlin was recently remodeled and reconstructed by urban planners and acousticians to improve its ambiance - with special regard to its sonic properties. One of the outcomes of this project is a noise barrier (gabions) reducing traffic noise on the playground.

Following a particular "soundscape approach" Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp and her colleagues conducted "soundwalks" and invited local residents to participate in the planning process. In respondance to their requests for pleasant sounds several "audio islands" were installed: visitors of Nauener Platz are supposed to sit down on benches with integrated speakers and to listen to ocean surf or birdsong. In effect these sounds now merge with the traffic noise in the background, thus creating a strange mix of environmental sounds which were formerly antithetic.

For her work at Nauener Platz Schulte-Fortkamp was granted the “European Soundscape Award” in November 2012.
