Teki Latex would be a good name for a sex-positive fetish clubwear brand were it not already taken. As it is, it’s a good name for Paris-based Julien Pradeyrol, aka Uncle Baby Latex.

A former rapper and co-founder of seminal French labels Institubes and Sound Pellegrino, he’s built his name as an enthusiastic wearer of outerwear whose technically-minded DJ sets pull off impossible blends and feature everything from the freshest gqom to 80s pop anthems. A Rinse France resident, his skills as a selector have also found him a place in the Paris chapter of ballroom’s legendary House Of Ninja, while Boiler Room France called on him for curatorial connections.

This is the second time @tekilatex has played for us at FM. There's something about the combo of Teki, Sputnik, smoke and lasers that is the perfect holy union. Link in bio 👆🏽

FM049: Teki Latex live from Sputnik at FM2022

After making his FM debut on the main stage last year, Glasgow’s Wheelman comes correct with an hour of techy club-not-club heaters. 

Owner/operator of label Stereotone, he’s hosted fellow Scottish troops, such The Burrell Connection, along his own productions. With a sound taking in deep house, broken beat, woozy electro and a touch for gorgeous soaring melodies, his tracks have also graced Studio Barhus, DBA Dubs and Belters.


For these sixty minutes though he’s in late night mode. Drawing from current favourite labels like MAL Recordings, Kincaid and Redstone Press, stripped down beats and bass flow like sonic eddies – the occasional flash of light monetarily breaking the trance.

"This mix is basically just a snapshot of the kind of thing you could expect to hear me play late into the night, lots of harder edge bits with a few moments of brightness sprinkled throughout. Also tried to include as much music from labels and artists that I'm really enjoying at the moment like Pigeon Steve, LWS, MAL Recordings, Kincaid, Redstone Press and so many more!"

To faff is to dither, to fanny around, to prat about.

Ignore the dictionary, because there’s nothing inconsequential about the time FAFF, aka DJ/producer duo Ornography and Elliott, spend digging and making music. Residents at Big Dyke Energy (the same club night that Elliott co-founded with Melo which is about to take a break so throwing a bunch of not-to-be-missed farewell parties), their high energy sound has taken them across Europe, while closer to home they’ve rocked FOLD, the Cause, Unit 18 and the main stage of last year’s Field Maneuvers for one of our fave sets of the weekend. 

Bridging the ground between New Jersey garage and classic breakbeat, 90s euro house and up-to-the-minute club cuts, their ‘Camp Summer Hits’ EP for Planet Euphorique (out today!) channels all this, and more, into a uniquely fruity/fabulous/fun sound that reflects the new queer underground. And if you need further proof of their credentials, check their soaring trance take on Ugly Drugless’s ‘Titties’ titled ‘FAFF Fisting Our Way Into Heaven remix’.

Their mixes always leave us grinning and feeling hiiiiiigh. A serious case of "the music's enough for me mate". And this mix even contains a cheeky little number inspired by their time at FM last year. Over to Elliot & Orny to tell us about the mix:

FM053" Buggery Grips

Another alumni of Dalston Superstore, the BRIT school of East London, Buggery Grips (aka Toby Hooves) makes his FM debut this year. 

Founder and resident DJ of queer club night Fast & Bi-Furious, a party dedicated to bisexuality and bass, he’s played host to guests such as L U C Y, Naina and Soul Mass Transit System. His own sets, meanwhile, cover a range of gritty, low-end led sounds as this mix demonstrates. Blending speed garage, bassline, funky, hard house, breaks, hardcore and jungle, it’s a high energy party ride to help make this your summer of wub. Over to Buggery Grips to tell us more:

FM053: Buggery Grips

DJ Pointless sounds like a moniker commenting on the intransient, futile nature of fun, specifically the kind that involves USBs and jog wheels, in the face of the ever-beckoning void of death and nothingness that’s coming for you and everyone you’ve ever loved. 

But actually it’s the musical alter ego of Pointless Illustrations, our fave designer who makes FM look so good –  so actually it’s just a play on the futility of illustration. Cheer up guys, it’s a party and DJ Pointless is bringing his Handy Records for a takeover on Friday night in Laika. 

Retromigration is Pointless' bff, label mate  and flatmate so is also Amsterdam-based, but with releases on the likes of Wolf Music (as well as Handy, obvs) he treds a groovier, funkier path, drawing comparison to the likes of Kerry Chandler and Folamour. He can lend his hand house to techno, jersey, you name it. His recent Boiler Room at Polifinic in Italy was absolute fire, keep an eye for when it’s uploaded. 

DJ Pointless put together this mix together for us "Showcasing new  tracks from my label Handy as well as the new imprint Natural Frequencies and some unreleased bits from friends. A blend of new and old 90s tech house and trance infused business."

iona is a long-standing member of the FM fam. Last year she took over Sputnik on Saturday night and melted our tiny little minds. This is what she has to say about this mix:

"Sweat was raining from the ceiling, it was one in one out, everyone was dirty (in a sexy way). I’ve shared my favourite 45 mins of the set. Straight in, no kissing. Stompers and euphoria in abundance."

We first met Tia Cousins in 2019 when she came to volunteer. She sent us a few mixes and naturally we booked her for the very next FM. We love Tia's disregard of genre and pure love for anything with the right je ne sais quoi.

This was the first time she played Sputnik and she nailed the brief. Warming up for Optimo and their Watching Trees takeover, it's the perfect mix weird, euphoric and a bit emotional - you'll know the bit we're talking about when you hear it. Not a dry eye in the house. 

This is what Tia had to say about the mix: "Hazy memories from this one but I know it was a fkin hoot! Lots of wiggy bits, booty shakers and even a tear jerker in here live from the real life pleasure dome."

We first met Toshiki Ohta as a punter many years a go. He's one of the most generous people in our scene, always willing to go out of his way to help assist a party. His knowledge runs deep and he can play a set to any mood. Last year he played Sputnik and no genre was untouched. We've got this mix on at FMHQ right now and everyone is working at least 120% harder. Over to Toshiki to tell you about this mix.

"I went to Field Maneuvers for one night in 2018 with Dr. Rubinstein and heard her, Billy Nasty (who I hadn’t seen play since Club UK as a 16 year old), and Claire Morgan in the Sputnik that night. After that experience, I really had it in my mind that I would love to play that space one day… Fast forward 5 years, I was finally invited to play…

It had pissed it down with rain the night before, and it was a hot day. The day time heat in Sputnik was intense, and I had sweated through my t-shirt before I had even started (big up Fencing Crew for the top-tier warm-up), and I was really nervous.

When I started playing, and I just saw the most welcoming faces in the dome. I just thought, “I can actually just play what I want here, and this dance floor will come along with me for the ride,” and they did.

I really got to play across genres and BPMs - acid house, blog house, techno, French filter, bass, techno, breaks, italo, electro, dancehall acapellas, footwork, hard groove, and finishing with a barrage of emotional rave records I had never played out. I burned through 38 tracks in 90 minutes with loads of fast drops and drum loops on the third CDJ. I could have quite happily carried on playing for hours.

In my 23 years of DJing, that was the most fun I have ever had playing a set. Thank you, Field Maneuvers + the best dancers, and not forgetting Curt + Flynn / Sound Services for the incredible sound - playing on a massive 4 point Funktion 1 set up for a dancefloor that size was a privilege. "

Jay Duncan beams in for our next podcast with her 2024 set at The Packet Inn. An Adonis and Dalston Superstore regular, she sashays through 90 minutes of SXC house groovers, pumpers and jackers.

"I had the best time playing in that silly little pub! Unfortunately, I was clashing with my best friend Angel D'lite who was showing Sputnik how it's done, which was heart-breaking to leave!”. Afterwards, however, they discovered both had played Sunscreen’s ‘Perfect Motion’ peak set (albeit different mixes). “I thought that was such a beautiful moment of natural synchronicity, or as she likes to call it 'the mushroom network’.”

“I also closed my set with this crazy track by George Acosta called Might As Well Party (Jungle Mix) that I'd found the previous week. It's this slutty, chuggy, fast house record and it breaks down into some ragga tip and switches tempo and ramps up to full on jungle track and then just casually resumes into a slutty fun house record. I adore it and think it’s just such a laugh!!!"

Launching new label, Pond Water, this month, Jay christens it with her track ‘Horse That Shows’ on the 29th, while she has an EP coming on Trule in the New Year.

Ahead of this weekend's party in collab with iona and her party Low End Dreams, we are sharing iona's set from Sputnik last year. She was in charge of Friday night in the dome and set the tone perfectly for the rest of the weekend: the perfect mix of heads down moments and a big fat sprinkling of fun. 

"Putting together a stage for Field Maneuvers was such an honour and I wanted to curate something that bridged the gap musically between rave and techno. I played after Jurango and before djrum; in somewhat classic style, my set was chunky and skippy for the most part with a breakbeat finale. I love the way tunes with lots space and dynamic range in them sound on the dome’s EvoX 4 point system, it’s such a buzz to play tunes you know you love, but then hear loads of new elements while you’re performing live - genuinely reacting with surprise and excitement along with the crowd."

FM051: Lewis Lowe 

We’re bringing back the title of “soldier of the scene” in order to hand it straight to Lewis Lowe (@lewis-lowe). Hailing from a wee hamlet in the Highlands, Lewis is a proud ambassador of the Scottish rave continuum, carrying the spirit of lochside free partying into all of his on-point curation, both as co-founder of the Redstone Press label (Pseudopolis, Kincaid, Henry Greenleaf) and booker for Glasgow basement The Flying Duck. “We can’t remember how we first met Lewis,” say the always honest FM crew, “but he quickly became one of the team and is our site manager for the build, bossing people about on his walkie talkie.” 

It’s no surprise to find that Lewis’ FM mix opens with a long list of instructions: “Let us beautify the house of Field Maneuvers together!” Recorded inside the Laika tent at last year’s festival (and then lovingly re-recorded at home after the file got corrupted) his mix is a menagerie of big, beautiful hoofers, with every genre, species and colourway represented. Nerdwave electro built by robotic arms and clockwork elves. Debris from a harrowing incident at the airhorn factory. One museum-grade example of late ‘90s trance culture. Tick follows tock follows tick follows tock. Objekt remixing Sampha’s ‘Wildfire’! Notts grime! SOPHIE! These could only be the selections of a DJ with open ears and tidy salute. Now shut up and dance.

FM061: Lewis Lowe

If Field Maneuvers was a spaceship, Local Group (@wearelocalgroup) would be the rocket boosters: extremely heavy, highly flammable, essential for lift-off – yet, tragically, doomed to part ways at high altitude. The twin propellants of Joe Nonlocal (@ecstasygaragedisco) and L Major (@lamjor) have played every FM since day dot, pumping the dome with the noxious fumes of British rave excellence and even releasing their own tribute to the festival’s beloved Sputnik stage (2018’s ‘Laser Dome’ EP on Ritual Poison). But after 10 years together, they’ve finally uncoupled from the FM payload – though both of them will be back at FM 2025, playing sets right next to each other (Joe Nonlocal b2b Angel D'Lite (@angeldlite) and LMajor flying solo. 

On this farewell mix, captured deep inside the Sputnik laserfog in 2023 (sadly 2024's set recording got disrupted by the powercut) smiley faces explode from rushing breakbeats, boyracer basslines swerve between diva vocalchops, fairground wurlitzers pump up the jams, and Missy Elliott sends us a voicenote after a particularly good balloon. This is the spirit of ‘92 – not as cheap nostalgia, but as an eternal code to abide by. Shades on, cig lit: everything is energy.

As their voyage comes to an end, look out for a small asteroid shower of the recent 'Quantacid' release on Dead Trax and the upcoming Maximum Airtime (that one features a remix from hardcore ledge Jerome Hill) as well as new solo music from both of them, with Joe expanding his Corporeal Face alias.

Joe offered some parting words: “Local Group are heading for different parts of the universe – at least for the time being. It’s been a journey beyond our dreams since we got the name from a book called Cosmos, reading it in a basement flat in Clapton. We’ve got to meet and play alongside heroes such as 2 Bad Mice, Mark Archer and Manix, plus too many others to name. We’ve supported Grooverider and seen what’s on Groove’s rider: a bottle of Grey Goose.

Massive gratitude to everyone who’s been behind us along the way, booked us, danced, bought and played our music. Special thanks to Wavey Garms for championing us throughout. And, of course, our eternal love to Field Maneuvers, where it all started and grew. After a power cut plunged Sputnik into darkness during our FM set last summer, it felt like the cosmos’ way of telling us to end it there too. Hardcore will never die, but we all will. Make the most of it.”

FM060: Local Group live from Sputnik FM2023

This year the Sputnik stage hosts a start-to-finish takeover by the rascals at The Gun – formerly the dirtiest discopub in East London until its tragic closure in March this year: rest in sleaze! To honour its unholy spirit we decided to reach out to pub landlord and flame-keeper Nick Stephens to invite the Gun Club first team down to FM. Not only did they say yes, they fielded Vladimir Ivkovic and Lena Willikens, Tia Cousins, Daisy Moon and – it must be said – an undersung hero of London clubland: bloghouse original and techno survivor Casper Clark.

Nick and Casper will cut the ribbon on Sputnik with a two-hour B2B, which might sound a tiny bit like this warm-up session recorded on the first day of 2025. “Nick and I had the honour of opening up The Gun’s last and final New Year’s Day festivities,” recalls Casper, “before Dan Avery, Lukas Wigflex, Tia Cousins and Nathan Wilkins. Some lineup, that!

“In truth we were confronted by a biblical downpour and the slowest of starts, but if anything that emboldened us to dig a little deeper and play even more eclectically that we’d normally be inclined.” Ah, the E-word. A lot of DJs claim to be eclectic, don’t they? Usually playing a heady mix of techno, house, tech-house and everything in between. Not so with these two, as demonstrated on their finely crafted yet freeform, almost supernaturally guided mix, which wanders like a ghost from underwater dub through to ‘80s minimal wave, Muslimgauze and misty Balearica, before setting us afloat on gentle waves of drug-chug. No requests, please!

As both a meticulous technician and a built-in-the-90s raver, Toshiki Ohta is the kind of DJ who can mega-mix his way out of the tightest genre corner. Which is handy, because his gift to FM this year is a near-three-hour mix crafted entirely from this year’s line-up – a task so excessively awkward you have to wonder if there’s some sort of masochistic kink going on here.

Now the risk, obviously, is completing the task to the letter only to deliver a rizzless plodathon of C-tier tunes and awkward transitions. But this is Tosh we’re talking about: no half measures! The result is monument to the moment: hoving into view under a fog of ambient Midland, it starts heady and heads-y, flowing through chuggy electro (auratekh, Lena Willikens) and rugged club tesselations (Ikonika, Prince of Deptford) before hitting a shinier seam of techno intensity (Roza Terenzi, Benton) and exploding into confetti cannon rave (Angel D’Lite, Big Ang).

Unsurprisingly, Tosh rates it as one of the most time-consuming sets he’s ever put together (including his recent eight-hour Goodhood mix). “It was a massive researching process – there were spreadsheets,” he sighs, “because I treat every mix that I do like I’m recording a mix CD in 1995.” Standing O, please!

From the Lock Tavern via The Gun to spoons…

Family Silver are Mr Nick ‘The Gun’ Stephens and Casper ‘Volte Face’ Clark.

Nick was the publican at The Gun, a much-loved Hackney institution that recently closed its doors – more on that here for those who have been living under a rock. Nick’s excellent Netil radio show can also be found here.


 
Casper, is based in Clapton and was the music programmer for Camden institution The Lock Tavern where our paths originally crossed – most of the time being kicked out whilst DJing. Casper’s shared stages with Justice, Jeff Mills, Helena Hauff, Daniel Avery and many more and is also known for his long-running BleeD events via which he collaborated with labels like Blackest Ever Black, PAN and Downwards. Both share a love for “v lo-fi early eighties sound, kosmische, post-punk and scuzzy electronics,” with Nick’s influences ranging from 80s TV themes and Giorgio Moroder to The KLF, while Casper was shaped in his youth by electronic acts like Leftfield, Underworld, and William Orbit with DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo Records becoming a huge influence later on.

Their sound sits between post-punk and the electronic… so with that in mind let’s give it a listen shall we?

One month to go until the festival and FM resident Ben Sims has put together a real treat of a podcast for us. 

The Ben Sims we know today is renowned worldwide as one of the best techno DJs. Catch him live or on his regular NTS show 'Run It Red' and his trademark techno sets are a dynamic mix of pure intensity and knowledgable groove. Growing up in and around London's rich culturally mixed music scene he has played and partied through hip hop, house and hardcore, so it should be no surprise that he's also got a deep love of roots too. 

And this year at FM, we are lucky enough to have our resident flex both his techno and roots muscle. Over to Ben to tell you a little about the mix: 



"Ahead of my alternative Roots set at Field Maneuvres, I've put together a selection of some of my favourite versions, loosely blended with authentic sound system fx and sirens.  Most are from 30+ year old 45's but there's a few LP tracks too plus a couple of dubplate-only cuts that were never officially released. 

Many were Jah Shaka power plays for years and staples of his sets in the late 80's, early 90's when I first started getting into Roots Reggae properly and going to ‘Dances’. I tend to favour the uncompromising 'Warrior Style' or 'King David Style' that Shaka championed, so this is a session of seriously bass-heavy material that brings back many happy memories for me, but also a selection I think anyone with even a passing interest in Reggae or Black Dance Music in general can appreciate.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

"Here's my two (and a bit) hour set from Field Maneuvers back in August, my favourite festival in the world.

This was by far the most time I've ever spent preparing for a single set or mix—I probably went through 10-15 crates of tracks, obsessing over flow, texture and tempo. Eventually, I landed here: an expression of love for dance music at 174/140 BPM.

After learning the recorder malfunctioned on the night, I quickly re-recorded it to ensure I reflected the flow of the night as closely as possible.


The set represents exactly what I personally wanna hear on massive sound systems right now and is a love letter to the hours danced in that field with my best friends.

FM007: Matt Pond

Recorded at the Edge Of England (aka Ramsgate), Hannah Holland has created a 'wormhole to the unknown' in her pre-Field Maneuvers' mix.

Drawing on the energetic diversity of East London's love of genre-crunching, DJ/producer/label boss Hannah Holland has held residencies across the city; whether it was the legendary Trailer Trash, our beloved Dalston Superstore or her own Batty Bass parties, Hannah understands the science of the dancefloor as a transportive wormhole.

Fresh from seeing her play at Glastonbury in Block 9's Genosys and new spot The Meat Rack, we are very excited to welcome Hannah Holland to FM where she plays as part of the Dance Tunnel Soundsystem on Sunday afternoon.

FM011: Hannah Holland

Having established himself as a master of the sample, Mark E’s re-edits of Janet Jackson, Womack & Womack and Mariah Carey are never far from our list of favourites. 

His Stone Breaker and Product Of Industry album releases on Spectral Sound saw him take a break from clever sampling and a disco-fuelled past to total original productions which honed in on a sound that was utilitarian and classic in feel; leaning towards analogue equipment to create an industrial house sound still tinged with the warmth of his disco past. 

A long-standing member of the FM fam, Mark will be playing his usual Friday night main stage slot:  "Forget the rest of the world, Field Maneuvers has become the highlight of my year, not just as a DJ but as a party attendee! To now be considered a resident makes me very happy, and it'll be the other residents who will be on my who to see list."

It’s this spirit that makes the Birmingham-based DJ, Mark Evetts a cherished Field Maneuvers resident!

FM014: Mark E

Ever wish you had a time machine? Us too. We regularly spend time weighing up the pros and cons, trying to work out whether or not it would be better to transport ourselves back to Studio 54 circa 1977, just in time to jump on a white horse with Bianca Jagger; or instead to wind the clock back to early September 2016 and visit a field close to our hearts.

Luckily for us, the wonderful Greg Wilson has taken the sting out of the decision by having had the foresight to record his FM16 Sunday afternoon set, so we can all relive that magic moment again right now. And worry about the white horse for another day.

Greg Wilson is a man who needs little introduction. After 40 years of DJing, his musical knowledge and ability to read a dancefloor is quasi-cosmic. After witnessing the mobile discos playing at wedding parties in his family run pub, he purchased his first pair of decks aged 15. He was an early champion of funk, soul and disco and was famed for playing the latest imports at Wigan Pier and Manchester's Legend. His hunger for cutting-edge sounds led to him being credited as one of the key DJs breaking NYC's electro-funk and post-disco on this side of the pond. And an early-adopter of turntable mixing, by 1983 he had a residency at the infamous Hacienda, AKA the spot where the breakdancing crew he later went on to manage, Broken Glass, appeared on legendary TV show The Tube during the UKs first televised performance of Madonna.

He's now widely hailed as the king of the re-edit, taking firm favourites and transforming them into hypnotic disco versions. We've regularly found ourselves lost in Greg's festival sets and at last, our dream to have Greg join us at FM came true this year. He set up his Revox Reel-to-Reel on our outdoor stage on the Sunday afternoon. As he worked his magic, the dancing only paused briefly, as in impromptu 250 strong FM fam photo was taken, before his spell-binding set finished with everyone singing along to Bowie's Space Oddity. A truly magical moment. Greg Wilson, hail Eris, we salute you!

Known amongst her fans and friends as the 'First Lady of Drum & Bass' DJ Storm has been D'n'B royalty since the very beginning, making her name in the days of pirate radio where local heroes could be created overnight. She was chucked head first into the scene by her best friend Kemistry, who started dating a graffitti artist called Goldie - the three of them would later go on to set up Metalheadz; a label which defined and continues to define the the D'n'B scene. To this day Storm still reps under the famous skull banner.

With a passion towards all things old skool for the next entry into our Field Maneuvers mix series DJ Storm guides us through her inspirations from the inner-city; a trip through the history of D'n'B and a glimpse of what to expect from her vinyl-only set in September. Most of FM crew cut our raving teeth on D'n'B so we are honoured to welcome Storm to Field Maneuvers. 

DJ Storm "I was lucky enough to be asked to do a pre-mix for FM where I will be playing on Sat 2nd Sept. Then I got even luckier and was able to record the mix at one of my favourite producers and dearest friend's place; the mighty Digital. FM022: DJ Storm (Old Skool Mix)

As a collector, digger and perhaps most importantly, a DJ; Nick’s records have taken him far and wide, from his long-running residency in the land of the rising sun to his soon-to-come DJ set at Field Maneuvers. Under the Nick The Record moniker, Nick played Japan’s very first outdoor rave in 1993. That moment then spawned the iconic Life Force, the open-air party that spanned two decades and took over many a frosty mountain top and woodland setting across the country. 

Now firmly back on London turf Nick combined his near-encyclopaedic knowledge of continent spanning sounds with a fellow music obsessive John Gomez to bring us Tangent; the regular club night from the two residents that’s become a staple for London’s avid dancers and club dwellers. The premise is simple; great records played through a great sound-system, and where everything from Afro, disco and house, to impossible to Shazam should-be classics guide the dancefloor. 

After recent inductions into the Dekmantel Selectors podcast we’re honoured to have him join the Field Maneuvers series with 78 minutes of emotive house, midnight heaters and ‘80s tearjerkers designed for peak-time serenades and moments of joy. 

Nick The Record: “Thanks to the FM crew for asking me to provide a mix. A lot of my mixes that are already online are mostly Disco & Afro, so I wanted to approach this one from a different perspective. I’ve been going to Japan every year since 1993 to spin sets and this mix is reflective of my time there and what I would play during a Life Force party. So, I started out with some house music but I couldn’t help throwing in a few African & ‘80s drum machine dance records. The track right at the end is a forthcoming release on Soundway too, a Re-edit from myself and Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys) of Tabu Lay’s Hafi Deo. CleCleethorpes may be known for its sticky rock, questionable weather and as the Ibiza of the north, but if you delve a little deeper, a life next to the sea has inspired the musical incarnations of Carl H, founder of Animals On Psychedelics. While just two EPs deep Animals On Psychedelics is rapidly becoming the home of tripped out electronic music with a kick, with releases from Miro SundayMusiq (a track Carl first heard and signed at FM) and Invisible Menders already under their belts.

A firm family member of the Field Moves crew Carl, here's an hour of techno rollers, trancey and prog elements. As the weekender edges ever closer we’re eager to welcome Animals on Psychedelics to the FM field. And trust us when we say, it’s going to be a real trip.

FM027: Carl H

Representing their native city of Lisbon, DJs Photonz and Violet came together through a shared love of all things electronic and together, they're helping to build a new underground in the Portuguese capital. Inspired by the cosmic leanings of Drexciya and the ecstacy charged acid-house era, Photonz has seen his work released through labels like Creme Organization and the DJ Haus-headed Unknown To The Unknown. And at the helm of her Naive label imprint we have Violet, whose shimmering, kaleidoscopic take on techno and DnB-tinged electronica has been reaching the masses over the past few years. 

At FM 2017 they joined forces for a roaring 90-minute set, filled with peak time cuts that flowed between dystopian acid belters, heavy hitting techno and 4/4 rhythms designed for dark basements (or, should we say, our Field Maneuvers stages). While we're setting our sights toward the 2018 edition of our dirty little rave - with sets from Jayda G, Ivan Smagghe, Grooverider, Shed and more - let's reminisce, and experience what our last instalment was all about with Photonz b2b Violet live at FM2017. This set was recorded with all the raw ravey ambience and pleasure of the crowd. Enjoy.

Violet: "We didn’t plan this b2b and decided to play it by ear as the FM crowd is so colourful and open, and it worked. It was a symbiotic vibe start to finish. Fun but weird.  Ravey but soothing. That vibe."

Photonz: "Seeing such amazing and diverse people losing it to rave music and laser lights was everything. We just had to follow the energy that was already there - that always is there at FM."

FM034: Violet b2b Photonz live at FM2017

The champagne-tinged, Moschino clad sound of UKG may have filled the clubs and late-night bars of London from the late-90s and went on to become a cornerstone of British dance music, but at the turn of the millennium over in Hamburg, Ostgut Ton’s Nick Höppner was pioneering the sound in a city known for it's techno. At the time, Höppner formed part of the UKG crew Tune, picking up rare records and dubplates in London and throwing weekly garage raves in Hamburg’s red light district.

Decades have passed since that time of Hennessey fuelled revelry. Höppner has gone on to become a linchpin of Berlin’s underground and is now fronting a new label imprint Touch From A Distance. But UKG never dies, and thanks to a rediscovered plastic bag full of minidiscs nearly 20 years old we have Höppner’s Y2K mix, a rarely heard homage to garage grooves from the German selector that pays tribute to this foundation sound. Pull up.

Nick: "I‘ve recently borrowed a minidisc player from a friend and went through a plastic bag full minidiscs, which has previously collected the dust of seven different flats since the turn of the millennium. Amongst them I found this mix here which I must have recorded at some point in 2000 in my Hamburg bed room. At that time I’ve been part of the Tune crew and we were running a weekly UK Garage night at the Lounge, a club in the heart of Hamburg’s redlight district. I was also still working as a music journalist for Groove Magazine and going to London frequently, where I had access to a lot of UKG records which never even made it out of the UK (or London). Stupidly, though, I sold the biggest chunk of that collection sometime in 2006, but here is a little time capsule documenting my (ongoing) love for this music. Enjoy!"

Joe Roberts and Louis Major formed Local Group through a shared love of house, garage, hardcore and jungle after meeting in an East London basement. Part of a new breed of producers making breakbeat driven music, they recently featured on Corrupt-Data's ‘Hardcore Will Never Die’ compilation, have a track on the next instalment of the sought after 'Secret Rave' series and release their first full 12" on Ritual Poison towards the end of the year. And perhaps our best accolade yet, the title track from that forthcoming EP is named 'Laser Dome' and it's an unashamed love letter to hardcore, piano euphoria and our Sputnik stage. (If you've ever got lost in Sputnik, you'll understand.)

Alongside the likes of Jane Fitz, Auntie Flo, Mark Archer and many more we’re honoured to have Local Group return to FM18 as our residents once again, so it's only fitting they share their talents with the world with the next FM mix. Spanning tracks from DJ Seinfeld, Textasy, Bawrut and some very special cuts of their own, take an hour or so to familiarise yourself with the sound of Local Group.

“What is there to say about the Field Maneuvers crew? They’re the only people we’ve seen break into their own house-warming party. They also gave us a platform to play even before we formed Local Group, which we’re forever grateful for. Being part of their Saturday line-ups, playing alongside friends, and heroes like Mark Archer and Storm - is an annual highlight, as is the festival as a whole. FM036: Ben Sims presents Dub Revolution

For the FM regulars you'll know that Ben Sims' Saturday morning excursions into reggae, dub and lovers rock are a Field Maneuvers staple; a way to blow off the cobwebs from the night before for hungover steppas. For the uninitiated, and those who're maybe wanting to extend Notting Hill Carnival for another week, you're in for a real treat. 

Sims' love of downtempo Jamaican rhythms and music to groove to show us a different side to Ben, who is usually found making club foundations shake with 130BPM kick drums and high intensity techno. His record bag of rare reggae is deeper than a 5am smoking exit chat with a stranger, and we can't wait to bring it back to the field in just a few days time. 

Until then, we have FM036 and the Ben Sims fronted Dub Revolution, a one-hour portal into Caribbean riddims, digi-dub and sun-drenched introduction to the weekend ahead. Run the track.

FM036: Ben Sims presents Dub Revolution

@Scott-Fraser is a name that’s synonymous with London club culture. As a solo producer he’s made records and remixed for Rotters Golf Club, Black Nation, Wave , Rush Hour, World Unknown and his own LNM and DX Recordings Labels under a number of aliases from the Electro and techno of Aquariun to his darker leaning Nothing but Blood project. Oh, and he’s released a whole bunch from other people too via Crimes Of The Future, the label he co-owns with Timothy J. Fairplay. There is a slew of new solo material ready for release in 2019.

Arguably, however, we know Scott Fraser best as 50% of the UK party institution Body Hammer alongside Joe Hart. For over ten years Body Hammer has been making London’s late-nights weirder and more tectonic, pulling from a firmly held DIY ethos that sees them takeover secret locations across the city channeling the spirit of WBMX and The Music Box. 2019 will see Body Hammer Records launch with music from Scott &  Joe to kick things off.

Recorded at FM2018 live and direct from the Jane Fitz & Jade Seatle curated Field Moves tent we’re very happy to welcome Scott Fraser to the Field Maneuvers mix series with FM037. Over two hours Fraser provides respite from the cold winter months and a snapshot of why the Glasgow-born DJ and producer has become a firm London favourite over the years.

FM042: Desert Sound Colony

It’s been a monumental last year for Desert Sound Colony, boss of Holding Hands records. At the forefront of a new wave of tech-house and breaks coming from London’s underground, in 2018 he also became a firm favourite with the likes of Lena Wilikens, Weatherall & Midland all heavily supporting his releases.  

Two EPs on his label, ‘Aunt Wendy's Wedding in Wales’ and ‘Tickle Me Pink’ displayed his talent for lithe, wonky grooves, unexpected turns and intricate sound design. But it was his EP for Nick Höppner’s Touch From A Distance which helped nudge him into the box of ‘those who have played Panorama Bar’.

With Holding Hands pushing a whole host of fresh artists going forwards, a new reissue label, Holding Hands Again, will be circumnavigating cog sharks to bring sought after tracks to the kids (and old people who were listening to funky house first time around) - starting with Timmy s & JB’s ‘A Long Weight’ EP, previously released on Wiggle and lots more to come! We are very happy to have Desert Sound Colony at FM as part of Nick Höppner's Touch From A Distance label showcase. Here's a little taste of what to expect. 

"It's a pretty well rounded selection of the sort of tracks that I am playing out at the moment. Quite banging in general with some trancey, broken beat and electro elements. There are also some forthcoming bits from myself as well as some from Holding Hands and Holding Hands Again... Expect a lot of this sort of thing at the festival this year. I can't wait!"

FM043: DJ Benny Ben (AKA Ben SIms) Presents Roots & Dub Galore

Imagine an alternate universe where best-selling gaming franchise ‘The Sims’ is about UK techno DJs and players have to take their avatar around the world, negotiating airport transfers and dodgy promoters, spend hours in hotel rooms eating chocolate out the mini bar, then play the gig in real time and head back to the airport on two hours sleep tweeting things like ‘Turin, you were amazing.’

Now imagine a universe where The Sims, aka UK techno DJ extraordinaire Ben Sims, owns the machine out of ‘The Fly’, except instead of mixing himself with a fly he merges with Kenny Ken and steps out as Benny Ben, dub specialist and vinyl junkie. You don’t need to imagine this universe because it’s our universe. It’s here. It’s now. It even includes some artistic licence about a Kenny Ken gene-splicing machine.

Benny Ben is Ben Sims’ real life avatar, as he’s already a techno DJ touring the world, eating chocolate out of mini-bars and tweeting stuff like ‘DJ Rebel Badboy reporting for duty’. Benny Ben travels, especially to a field in Oxford, but he spins rare, rootsy 12s and 45s of reggae, dub and lovers rock. Benny Ben loves soundsystem culture, body-moving bass and the sound of sunshine. Benny Ben is back to show us how it’s done.

Haus of Slopulence are the messy drag collective built for Field Maneuvers: raving it up all weekend, then slipping their portmanteau into a heel to carry on the madness as front-of-house dancers extraordinaire.

It continues FM’s long-standing affiliation with East London (see dearly departed Dance Tunnel and still proud mothership Dalston Superstore) and provides the launchpad for J.Aria, who records our latest podcast. 

When not getting slopulent, Jacob, to flesh out the J, is a producer and soundtrack composer - and DJs at Adonis, Dalston Superstore, Heaven and the queer-beyond (with their parties playing host to Object Blue, Loraine James, Spinee and more). Their eclectic Threads Radio show flips between rave-heavy electronica and ‘modern-classical, noise and experimental for you honeys’. 

For this mix, however, it’s straight to the dancefloor and this one has a runaway. Percussive house pumpers rub shoulders with bouncy, continuum-inflected club cuts, trippy techno with bassline wobblers. 

It’s peak NRG, marinated in the sweaty experience of someone who’s been on FM’s main stage as much as any DJ. So if you’re missing your dose of final-night festival delirium, simply get some choice mates, stay awake for three days, then slap this on loud.
