Spent a few hours walking around Fort Fisher NC. Lots of rocks organized by the state parks. I was standing on the rocks and with the boom pole was able to capture waves crashing up and over the rocks. 

Fort Fisher is a small location and the staff there take pride in sharing what they know about the fort. There are quite a few artifacts onsite and I'm sure you can google images of the fort. If you go, don’t forget to walk behind the museum to the fort - it’s worth getting the perspective of what the soldiers were experiencing when ships approached. One of the bunkers is intact but not accessible. Meaning, you can’t open the door to go in.

The trees by the rocks are essentially at 45 degree angles caused by the wind. Cool view when the sun is shining directly over.

Naschmarkt is Vienna's oldest market, having been held since the 16th century. Today it is one of Vienna's most popular markets with a vivid mix of typical market stalls, cafes and restaurants. This short soundwalk takes us through the market on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Saint Michael's Church is one of the oldest churches in Vienna, dating from about 1220–1240. This recording captures the church bells as they ring out across the city.

The bees were very active on this sunny day in March. Above, birds singing at the top of their voices (northern wren, robin, common chaffinch, tits, etc.)

We only seem to have this 'leiern motif' on the Gwent Levels, I don't seem to hear much at all inland or in upland gwent. It would be good to know if it's a geographical adaptation and why only these lowland sites tend to have retained this motif. I have a few prevailing theories, maybe I'll do a talk on it one day.

Walking into a bird hide and there was a beautiful nest right next to the main entrance door so just stood there amongst them as they were flying all around me, no apparent danger, they were just trying to get past me and my gear to get to the entrance holes, which appeared to be in multiple places.

Always struggle to get extended recordings of these guys as they rarely sing from one perch, constantly moving between phrases and it's always from deep within the hedgerow, which is becoming increasingly harder to record in as the leaves come out and dampen the sound. Times like these I wish I had a recent shotgun microphone but I do have another Mk 2 on the way which may help give me a little more room for error. The mk 4 is such a precision tool, certainly has more detail but isn't always the right tool for the Job.

I'm starting to realise with much of my sound recording these days, that's it's not always about the subject you're recording, (as much as I do love that on its own), it is nice to have other elements in the background to paint more of a picture about the environment. This is why I spent so much money designing a rig where I could capture both the subject and the ambience in full schoeps glory.

Sedge Warbler And Whimbrel - MixPre - 6982

Always a pleasure recording these often endless performances in the reed bed and they seem to return to the exact same spots every single year, even in the vast reed beds, they all have their territories and they make sense of all the chaos. I listen to these performances and pick out all the British bird mimicry I can find but I can only imagine how many more species I miss.
