An epic sonic journey crossing classic Kompakt territory - from Pop Ambient to tuneful techno and house -, VAL MAIRA is not just the extended follow-up to DAVE DK's much-adored PALMAILLE 12" (KOMPAKT 277), a release that already stood out for its almost uncanny emulation of Kompakt's more impressionist panoply, but a sonic achievement in its own right - a record as delicate as it is candid, deliberately showcasing all its strengths and dodges, but ultimately - magically - amounting to so much more than the mere sum of its parts. In many ways, VAL MAIRA is the perfect Kompakt record, albeit one that Kompakt never made. Until now.

Dave's third full-length after his 2007 album on Moodmusic and a debut on Müller Records in 2000, this new offering named after a valley in the Italian mountains goes beyond admittedly impressive production skills, aiming for deeply personal expressiveness and emotional impact. From the tender dawning of opener FADE IN to the solid dance chops of enticingly grooving cuts like SMUKKE LYDE, NUEVA CANCION or COOLETTE, the record's preoccupation with the mutual dependencies of harmony and discord is quickly revealed: "I've tried to create an interlocking atmosphere of merriment and melancholy for the full duration of an album", says the producer, not withholding his intention to create something beautiful: "I hope that one can hear a little bit of hope in the tracks, like everything's going to be fine."

You might be forgiven for taking this as a massive understatement, coming from someone who seems to know a fair deal about that elusive something called human warmth. "Although you can be incredibly creative thanks to limitless digital means, I think that the biggest challenge lies in creating a link to something human, generating feelings of warmth that reach and move the listener", says Dave - painting the picture of a highly reflective artist that spends much time with fine-tuning the emotional registry of his pallet, laboring vigorously over the concept of a track as he does over its sound design: "before anything else, I need an idea and a general notion of the development of a track - just jamming doesn't work well for me." All the more surprising how all this planning and thinking translates into something as organic sounding and nearly self-emergent as HALMA, VEIRA or WHITEHILL, the latter featuring the distinctive (and decidedly human) vocals from PIPER DAVIS of Stimming fame.

One could very well describe these tracks as both intimate and sociable at the same time, a rare combination that might also account for the vivid sonic storytelling present in cuts like KRONSEE (referring to an actual lake near Dave's birthplace) or WE MIX AT SIX, the synaesthetic retelling of a delayed party at the beaches of Barcelona, where someone spray-painted the title's vital information on a t-shirt swaying in the summerly breeze. Heavily influenced by film soundtracks, drone sounds and organic noise, DAVE DK obviously feels very close to the perpetual atmospheric hum in between sounds, finding hooks and grannies in the tiniest nooks and crannies - and to hear these eleven tracks lovingly intertwining their inspirations while seemingly creating nutrient-rich textures and meaningful melodies out of thin ether remains a riveting experience even after the nth play-back.

Constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of Vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. Like the word itself, Vertere, with its roots in the Latin word Verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier Sanskrit word, Vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. It means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. A paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. An apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established Life and Death artists Mind Against and the new artist project of Federico Maccherone, aka Somne.

On remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of Tobias Freund, you don’t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of Vertere he very clearly shows why. This long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. With Vertere he takes what’s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. With a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the Tobias. remix of Vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. It marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

Marc Romboy's infectious, driving cut for Bedrock records Counting Comets is back with a fresh new remix by Berliner and Watergate resident Ruede Hagelstein. The original track – also released on Digweed's seminal label – was Romboy at his most uplifting, cosmic and grooving tech-house best.  
After igniting clubs worldwide, the dance-floor favourite, originally released in summer 2015, receives an updated sheen from Hagelstein (who recently remixed Namito and Brams 'YTO' on Romboy's Systematic Recordings) imprint), plus a brand new follow on cut from Romboy himself. 
Hagelstein's interpretation takes the listener on a journey through twisted and distorted tech house from the offset, with disintegrated, 8-bit beats lending the track a stomping groove. He roughed up the pristine edges of the original and lain down a thumping kick drum while distorted synth chords fluctuate between minor and major tones. 
Romboy offers listeners a fresh interpretation in 2016 with Part 2, his down-tempo mix of the original cut. Rising through a crescendoing swathe of atmospheric tones like a sunrise over a valley, it's beatless montage of ambient sounds and vast, rolling harmonics offer a calming and soothing beginning for this ten minute epic. Then, a growling, melodic bassline grounds the track with solid foundations as sprinkles of groove and heads-down atmosphere begin to unfold.

Kellerkind steps up to the plate with Subzero, a slice of cavernous dub tech. Breathy vocals and sparse ethereal elements set a dreamy mood. Underlined by smooth piano chords, the vocal develops into a full fledged hymn that is both emotive and mesmerising. For his second take, the Swiss producer embarks on a techno tinged journey. Opting for distorted synths and a stomping bassline, he aptly crafts a near dungeon-like atmosphere only sweetened by a lush female vocal. Teaming up with Sven, they offer up Shakti Pan, a meeting point between tribal infused percussion and deep-set riffs. Hollowed out drums and bells chimes touch on chorus vocals and manage to create a highly immersive experience, rounding off the release on an uplifting note.

Berliner-based electronica live act GHEIST put forth two attention-grabbing tracks in their third release for Exploited, enlisting the aid of fellow producer and singer-songwriter Bayker on vocals.

Eponymous track Salvation kicks off proceedings, showcasing a deep tech exploration with late night dancefloor appeal. The original exposes a gradually unfolding piece, boasting a clean cut rhythm section and a methodical, straightforward structure centered around minor chords. 
Last Night In Paris reveals a dark brooding arrangement, as reflective vocals add a layer of mystery to the foundation of pensive pads and warped synths. What ensues is a contemplative atmosphere, that is mesmerizing as it is dance-inducing. 
Venlo is a nice last minute bonus addition strictly aimed for the dancefloor.

GHEIST kickstarted their young career last year and since then have grabbed attention from DJs and Media all over the place which led into a busy touring schedule including upcoming gigs at Razzmatazz Barcelona, Watergate Berlin, Sonne Mond Sterne Festival and many more club and festival appearances.
Very strong beginning for one of our new acts on the label Exploited.
