This episode of Passing Notes celebrates the release of Mosam Howieson newest offering, ‘Ether’ released  on Svreca’s stalwart techno/idm label SEMANTICA.

The occasion marks the return of this prodigiously talented producer to the limelight, and to Passing Notes, with his first appearance having been on episode 124 (three years ago!), when he introduced his stunning Aphelion EP, on Mysteries of the Deep to the world.

Mosam Howieson’s approach to music is nothing short of a deliberate experiment in world-building—a term often overused but perfectly fitting in this context. The album’s world is one of spacious, cinematic swells, enveloping arpeggiated synth lines and melodically melancholic themes that weave through moments of well paced, hypnotic downtempo techno. Each track expertly makes way for the next, the release’s strong narrative arc urging listeners to take a step back and tame their attention for a long form listening experience in a world dominated by playlists and streaming.

The cinematic feel of Ether is more than a stylistic choice; it is a reflection of Howieson’s intention to evoke vivid imagery and emotion. He does this by creating and curating times of uneasiness, balanced beautifully by passages of weightlessness and light. The album is accompanied by a stunning mother of pearl sleeve, aptly reflecting the movement, magic and depth of the music contained within.

Despite his growing international attention with releases on labels of only the highest regard, I remain steadfast in my opinion that Mosam Howieson remains one of the most underappreciated of local artists in Naarm. Mosam Howieson’s Ether is a testament to his exceptional talent and his commitment building his profoundly intricate and imaginative sound.

Morita Vargas is an experimental music producer and performer from Argentina, part of a new Latin American movement of women who inspire curiosity and deep listening. She explores new sonic pathways for a more sensitive society, crafting hypnotic atmospheres and textures in each track, singing in an invented language.  
She has released two albums: *8* (published by Hidden Harmony Recordings - Estonia) and *Mandrágora* (published by Autogénesis Magazine - Germany), both rooted in ambient, dream-pop, and fantasy soundscapes.

Jo Johnson is a British musician whose three-decade journey spans punk, techno, and contemplative electronic minimalism. A former guitarist for the influential 90s riot grrrl band Huggy Bear, she later immersed herself in the underground techno scene,  joining the Bleep43 collective in 2001 and founding its label. Jo’s solo work explores immersive and emotive sonic landscapes through synthesizers and effects, influenced by pioneering women in electronic music. Her albums have been released on Further Records, Going In, Mysteries of the Deep, and Castles in Space. She is a regular performer at festivals and venues like Freerotation, The Purcell Room, Cafe Oto, and Parallel.

In 2025, Jo launched Alterations, an evolving album project released track-by-track on Bandcamp, each piece accompanied by exclusive materials for subscribers. She has collaborated with pianist Hilary Robinson, releasing experimental works on 9128.live and performing at events like Daylight Music. As a DJ, Jo has appeared on platforms such as Refuge Worldwide, Monument Waves, and Music for Programming. Beyond music, she has contributed to a Huggy Bear book project compiling the band’s zines and history. Jo also co-curates Bleep43’s deep listening events in unique spaces across London, championing boundary-pushing artists in ambient and experimental sound.
