This track, edited from an improvisation recorded on 20th May 2019, starts off dark, eerie and mysterious, before some very nasty beats (courtesy of @fl-souto) kick in about half way through... some of our darkest material to date.

Stab of Pain, the new album of Sig Valax, is now available at Snow in Water Records (release date: July 3rd 2020).

In Stab of Pain, Sig Valax presents synthetic landscapes open like dreams through which she invites us to travel. Interior spaces of endless resonance, drones piercing the blanket of the night like a beacon, sequences that force us to listen differently. The listener is caught up in a magical flow of multiple streams.
There is something very feminine - stiched or woven - in Sig Valax's music, and there are clearly correspondences with her work as a digital artist and her onirochromes which draw wave tables and three-dimensional spectra. Dream figures that escape our perception, threads that intersect and create a mesh where the pattern alters repetition, a spirituality that is both wise and adolescent and offers new paths mapped out through sound synthesis. These 8 inspiring and singular titles resonate with the universe of artists such as Sarah Davachi, Eliane Radigue, Delya Derbyshire and Laurie Spiegel.

Sig Valax - Broken Eden

This is the world premiere of the new work for double-bell horn, developed during the Virtual Brass Academy with Christine Chapman and Ensemble MusikFabrik, July 2020. This performance took place on July 30th, 2020 - in Cologne.
I am indebted to Ensemble MusikFabrik and the fantastic work they did with us in introducing us to the worlds of double-bell instruments, and to the ever-expanding repertoire of new music for these instruments they are bringing to the world.

The work explores a sense of dual forces that act and react upon each other, and how the relative mediator (the performer) indeed interacts with the score, the instrument and it's two bells, and finally how the theatre of the piece - both through actions and the position of the instrument - is transmitted to the audience. In the four sections of the piece that each explore a different facet of the manipulation of the horn - first through the use of a contra-bassoon reed to produce aggressive yet fulfilling multiphonics; then in the second and third exploring the two bells and their range of possibilities. The final section condenses the instrument down to only it's single-bell form and the mute and interacts briefly with it to express a settling within the performance. Gasping, grunting, growling and grandeur are all some of the ideas explored in this short miniature.

A film whose complicated production took such a toll on Wong that he wrote and shot Chungking Express during its editing process, Ashes of Time Redux is a hallucinatory wuxia like no other. First released in 1994 and then re-edited and re-scored in 2008, Wong’s time-slipping picaresque takes loose inspiration from Jin Yong’s novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, focusing on a lovesick, embittered mercenary (Leslie Cheung), who acts as an agent for other swordsmen of fortune. Working with regular production designer William Chang, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and a superb ensemble (Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, and Jacky Cheung), Wong constructs an intricate, enigmatic vision of ancient warriors ensnared by the play of time and memory. Disquiet Junto Project 0473: Placebo Effect
The Assignment: Record the second third of a trio that others will complete.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the second in a sequence intended to encourage and reward asynchronous collaboration. This week you’ll be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0472). Note that you aren’t creating a duet — you’re creating the second third of what will eventually be a trio. Keep this in mind. Leave space for what is yet to come.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to the pre-existing track. Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3). The Assignment: Remix a trio by doing forensics on its component parts.

When I heard some results from disquiet0472, I had instantly some favourites, but choose to go on with a RNG track. This time I ignored some rules by going back to the tracks from disquiet0472, where I had considered to build on https://soundcloud.com/noimspartacus/orphaned-loop-disquiet0472?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (very minimalistic) and https://soundcloud.com/k-blamo/recording93disquiet0472 (just awesome), and by accident I this time stumbled upon https://soundcloud.com/anotherbenjamin/disquiet0472-paper-jam?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (great theme).

All sound sources come from these three tracks.  I started with cutting out loops, went on to looping in Ableton, exported to stems and mixed in reaper. I was not pleased with the harmonica loop from Ableton (all loops were triggered by probabilities) and remixed the cutouts in GleetchlabX and added the results. Then I added the usual reverbs and fx.
