Set the Mood with IYA! 

The first mix of this series dedicated on openingssets is deliverd by IYA, also known as Noa. Her interest in electronic music began quite early, at the age of 11. Her grandfather used to make music with one of the earliest versions of Fruity Loops (now known as FL Studio) and had a few synthesizers in the attic. Noa started experimenting with them, mostly just fiddling since they couldn't record anything due to the use of floppy disks. She found the sounds they produced simply fascinating. Her father suggested, "Why don't you try DJing?" At that time, Noa had no idea what that was, but after watching a few YouTube videos, her first lesson was scheduled. For a few months, she took lessons from a hardcore DJ who taught her the basics and the finer points of the craft. Once she got her own controller, she began to further develop her skills.

Nowadays, IYA is surely a well known name in the upcoming techno-scene. As part of Filtrum and gigs at events like Vault Sessions, Dockyard and Hide Festival, she surely is a name to follow. For IYA, a perfect openingsset is a deep, slower set that gradually builds more energy. Ensuring that the people who come in at the beginning are immediately excited and eager for the rest of the night. There should be something mysterious in it, not necessarily something ethereal, but something that evokes an euphoric feeling. Additionally, Noa always finds it important to make the set connect well with the artists following her on the lineup, so she adjusts accordingly.

"An opening set sets the tone for the rest of the event. It's the moment the organizers have been living towards to: the beginning of their event! It always feels special to be the one to play the first track through the speakers."

IYA’s style normally features minimal techno mixed with hardgroove-inspired tracks and influences from progressive house. Her passion began in the house scene, and this is often reflected in her techno sets. However, she tends to include less house in her opening sets, while in later sets or closing sets, she incorporates more funky elements. At that point, it doesn't need to be as serious - housey synths, vocals, and captivating basslines are what really works for her.

WILL YOU REMEMBER ME WHEN I’M GONE? (2024 EDIT)

Living, breathing, banging techno from an artist defining the highly-textured new frontier of the sound in 2024.

Lindsey Wang, AKA Polygonia, has an amorphous style you could call organic—or, better yet, harmonious. She interweaves unfamiliar elements with a mercurial touch. Wang can make something completely otherworldly sound totally, well, natural. It's made her a fixture everywhere from Munich's BLITZ to major festivals like Sustain-Release and Draaimolen.

Unsurprisingly, Wang is not one to be pinned down. Be it the sound design-anchored side project Lyder, her own label QEONE, or co-producing an album's worth of experimental percussion alongside jazz drummer Simon Popp, it's fair to say her personal output matches the feverish energy of her mixes. There's multidisciplinary, and then there's Wang: Poly-disciplinary, you might say.

Wang's entry into the RA Podcast series is no different, another stellar emphasis of her artistry. RA.955 is a voyage into wild variations of texture, rhythm and feeling, guided along by the principle of endless metamorphosis. Supple driving grooves meet crinkled surfaces, scuttling hi-hats meet chattering sonics, and good luck keeping hold of a consistent drum pattern for long. Behold a living organism raised by the club and the great outdoors in equal measure.

Gister is an artist hailing from Breda. He is a resident artist as well as being involved with other areas of the Breda based RUIS. Collective. The style of Gister is a modern take on the classical techno sound. With a minimal approach, a plethora of sound design, psychedelic and IDM influences shape an intimate atmosphere during his performances. Mixing elements  from Ambient, IDM and many more EDM genres throughout his music, he displays a desire for storytelling. Playing with tension and release to great effect. 

With his own organisation called 'Munity' he is also pushing greatly for communal growth and a more healthy music ecosystem. The organisation stands for growing together and focusses on creating a diverse and thriving artistic outlet both musically and artistically with their online presence and club nights.
