Formed from the chain-smoked ashes of Wellington’s Quincy Conserve, Malcolm Hayman’s unofficial training academy for session and touring pros, The 1860 Band was initially concurrent with the Quincys but eventually killed off its parent group when it proved the more popular of the two with pub patrons.

While Hayman continued with Captain Custard, The 1860 Band – whose name was imaginatively taken from the Lambton Quay tavern at which it held an extended Saturday afternoon residency – kept drinkers happy with a selection of jazz, funk and disco grooves, culminating in the release of their self-titled 1978 debut and swansong, now a very sought-after item by rare groove hunters the world over.

More notable for its stellar line-up than for ongoing musical achievements, the ensemble was led by trombonist and conductor Rodger Fox.

In 2017, Fox told Radio NZ, "we were all playing four nights a week! These places were rammed. In those days, there’d often be a rugby game on in the middle of the afternoon, and then great hordes of people would be coming down Adelaide Road afterwards to drink beer and dance.

That 1860 Band album is really just songs we played every night live.”
However, shortly after the album release, took several members on to the rather more prestigious Rodger Fox Big Band.

Keyboardist Peter Blake went on to write and perform synth-based television theme tunes that etched themselves into the minds of a generation and was an important producer and director for TV's Radio With Pictures in the 1980s. The guitar and bass playing brothers Martin and Rob Winch (formerly of Auckland jazz-fusion band Dr Tree and rock band Tamburlaine, respectively) carved out a niche as successful session guys and jingle writers before their untimely deaths in 2011 and 2012. 

In 2017, 'That’s the Kind of Love I’ve Got for You', the single taken from that increasingly valuable 1978 album (itself a cover of a 1974 single by Californian soul singer Rita Jean Bodine, also later covered by Dusty Springfield), was included by Alan Perrott on the NZ funk collection Heed The Call.

Germany-based Sebastian Stuetz is the brain and mind behind the well-known music-project “Final DJs”. Besides producing and DJ’ing, he is also into blogging at Nu Disco Your Disco , a prominent base for Nu-Disco around the web.

After experimenting with different kinds of electronic music, Daft Punk’s album „Homework“, gained his attention thanks to its sampled and retro-influenced house-music. While playing French-house, disco-house or synthwave for a few years as a DJ, the enthusiastic virtuoso followed up by creating his own music-project.

“Final DJs” was born back in 2010 and soon after, several remixes for labels like Kiez Beats, Universal Music or Pyramid (Kitsuné) saw the light just before in 2012, the first EP dropped via On the Fruit Records. The EP featured a remix by the hands of Justin Faust (Nervous Records) and was well-received by several prestigious blogs like Tracasseur.com, Neonized.net, Dödselectro, Discobelle.net as well as several prominent DJ*s.

In 2013 the single “One Day In The Sun” (Kiez Beats) which featured popular house-music vocalist Stee Downes went on to be played at Abercrombie & Fitch-stores worldwide while it made its way into the Beatport Nu-Disco charts thanks also to remixes by Teenage Mutants and Vintage Culture to stay there for quite some time.

The next release “Moonshine” in the very same year on Pole Position Records scored a “Ministry of Sound TV” video-feature and also popular DJ’s like Drop Out Orchestra, Anoraak or The Cyclist showed a lot of love for that tune.Besides all of the releases mentioned above, the Final DJs produced remixes for globally-known acts & artists like Goldroom, Kris Menace, Lifelike or MRTN.

A new EP is in the works and features Patrick Baker while he is also putting his hands on new songs that will be getting the cherry on the whip-cream thanks to talented singers like Jane Elisabeth Hanley and Dana Jean Phoenix who are both adding their beautiful voices to his productions. International blogs like TILT! Mag in Los Angeles, Como las Grecas or Wohlwill hosted Final DJs as guest-mixers.

Clubs like Kiki Ortaköy (Istanbul/Turkey), MyyyBitch Club (Vienna/Austria), Singerhaus(Basel/Switzerland), Wanderlust (Paris/France), Bar Romantica (Stuttgart/Germany), Buddha Lounge (Stuttgart/Germany), Klub International (Berlin/Germany) played hosts to the energizing sound of Final DJs already and a few more are up on the schedule already.
