I'm covering the John Jacob Niles version. Smithsonian Folkways put out an album with him singing this tune in 1964. Sam Cooke also put out an album with a gospel version of this tune in 1955. I'm not sure at the moment who wrote it, or if it predates the Sam Cooke release. Recorded with one mic (AT825). I took the first take and went with it. Tossed it in Audacity to normalize the track, then into Garage Band for a touch of reverb.
