We're delighted to welcome on noods radio for the 17th episode of CISTYT, «ОО0оϙ0О0О00О»: a sound art duo of @oo_aa and @optovolokonniy, assembled in Lisbon in a serendipitous twist of fate after the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This project is a heartfelt exploration of kinship and care, delving into the metaphysicality of human touch and reflecting on inner connections to the heritage. Both oa and ϙue are skilled at achieving ethereal states through their own medium: oa uses her natural voice, while ϙue creates voiceless synthetiscapes. Together, their auditory output weaves a beautiful tapestry of emotional release.

As a genuine vanguard of electronic music composition at the forefront of the modular synthesiser revolution in the late 1960s, Suzanne Ciani’s forward-thinking approach to new music would rarely look to the past for inspiration, which makes this unheard composition from 1969 a rare exception to the collective futurist vision of Ciani and synthesiser designer Don Buchla. In choosing to adapt the controversial prose of French poet Charles Baudelaire, Suzanne would join the ranks of ongoing generations of pioneering musicians like Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Serge Gainsbourg, Etron Fou Leloublan, Celtic Frost and Marc Almond (not forgetting Star Trek’s William Shatner!), all equally inspired by the 19th century writer’s works of “modernité” (modernity), a self-coined term dedicated to capturing the eeting, ephemeral experience of life in an urban metropolis, best exempli ed in his symbolic, erotic and macabre ode to Parisian industrialisation, Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers Of Evil).

In her varied career that would combine art gallery installations, major lm soundtrackings and commissions for Atari, Suzanne Ciani’s earliest experiments remain some of her most challenging, beguiling and timeless… Flowers Of Evil ticks all the above boxes and icks switches that would power-up a new uncharted universe of her own musical modernité. For the many enthusiasts that have already drawn the parallels between Baudelaire’s writings and experimental/ electronic music (a relationship rivalled only by the likes of J. G. Ballard and Aldous Huxley) some might instantly recognise an unconscious sistership between this recording and another 1969 electronic adaptation of Flowers Of Evil by celebrated female electronic composer Ruth White. An interesting distinction of White’s excellent version of Flowers Of Evil (released via Limelight records, home to the likes of Fifty Foot Hose and Paul Bley) is that its dark tone generation and vocal manipulation was created with a Moog synthesiser, the commercially triumphant rival to Suzanne and Don’s Buchla Systems (Buchla and Moog’s historic, simultaneous, neck-and-neck synth developments are well documented.) The fact that Ciani’s version was never intended for commercial release (not unlike her 1975 Buchla concerts, which could easily have taken Morton Subotnick’s Bull by the horns!) is also poetically re ective of the nature of Ciani and Buchla’s alternative perspective. The choice to present this extract from Flowers Of Evil in its intended French language further distances Ciani’s faithful reaction from some of its better-known variations. Having attempted to voice the poem herself, the multilingual Italian-American composer’s French accent did not meet her own standards, resulting in the request for a fellow unnamed French student who lived on campus at Mills College in Oakland to accurately verbalise the section of Baudelaire’s collection entitled Élévation.

Recognised as a mystical withdrawn masterpiece created by Irish electroacoustic pioneer Roger Doyle, the album Thalia's short-lived existence on CBS Classics was deemed a commercial failure in the eyes of blinkered major label suits but would further cement Doyle's contemporary concrète credentials - paving the way for a multi-disciplinary genre-bending career at the forefront of independent Irish music and earning him a coveted spot on the indispensable Nurse With Wound List.  With only 200 copies rumoured to have survived the CBS cull, Thalia has become an elusive and highly sought-after feather in the caps of collectors of both outsider electronics and avant-garde tape manipulation, and has long since been respected as one of the most important records in either field to emerge from the Emerald Isle.

In the widening realms of uncovered European outsider art and maligned musical enigmas, the composer most commonly known as A. R. Luciani, along with his indeterminable and mostly uncommercial discography, continues to exist on the extreme outer limits. Despite his unwaning commitment to the Italian production music for the TV and film industry his work remains mostly undocumented in recent excitable books and documentaries.  Meanwhile his advancements in contemporary music, tape music, neo-classical, jazz, electroacoustic and counterpoint composition remains confided to the educational sector while his vast historical concert work remained exclusive to this discipline. If it wasn't for continued interest of owners of library music labels in the early 1970s it is doubtful that we would ever even hear the truly unique music of this Sicilian born (Florence raised) polymath who would eventually share anti-release schedules with the likes of Alessandro Alessandroni and Daniela Casa. For this reason, unlike many indispensable library legends of the era, it's arguable that Luciani should be considered a library musician at all, rather an independent, highly educated, experimental musician who happened to make library records. Library music clearly needed Luciani, rather that Ricardo relying on RIA's gravy train like many disposable artists of the gilded golden era, which is why this first-ever collection of his music, represents just the tip of an iceberg in a very deep ocean.

Catering to record collectors and DJ-producers alike with a huge emphasis on sample friendly soundscapes, rocksteady back-beats and primitive electronic experimentalism. Discerning purveyors of the bizarre and abnormal should expect the Japanese choreography records, space-age Turkish protest songs, Czechoslovakian vampire soundtracks, Welsh rare-beats, bubblegum folk, drugsploitation operatics, banned British crime thrillers and celebrity Gallic Martini adverts... presented on CD, 7" and traditional black plastic discs in authentic packaging.

Following in the very same footsteps as the mind boggling "Music To Watch	Girls Cry" and "Songs In The Key Of Death" mix CDs for Fat City Records and the original 5-star rated Finders Keepers compilation LP in 2001, Manc-based vinyl-vulture, recording artist and record producer Andy Votel enlists the skills of fellow B-Music DJ and Rare Disc Detective Doug Shipton to form a team of psychedelic librarians and cosmic-pop-quiz-elitists to run their new Twisted Nerve distant sister-label, leaving no progressive pebble unturned or record collection un-rifled.

Future compilations and re-issues will feature collaborative curators such as David Holmes, Cherrystones and Bob Stanley and further contributions from mystery A- / B+ pop-celebrity fanatics of outsider music and ultra-rare bakelite discs. Finders Keepers is an 'accidental world music label' with a punk aesthetic and DJ friendly ethos which allows the desperate listener to sit back while we deliver schizoid cultural channel-hopping compilations and rocking-horse-shit & hen's-teeth re-releases to the comfort of your psych-starved living room...
