I think Zdeněk Liška was genius . But whole movie is absolutely brilliant.  It makes me really sad because 1968 in Czechslovakia.

Galvanising our ongoing commitment to the lost music of the Czech New Wave cinema movement from the late 1960s and 1970s, Finders Keepers Records follow up our series of previously unreleased music to Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders, Daisies, Saxana and The Little Mermaid with a short series of soundtracks for films by the country’s master of the macabre and the nation’s first point of call for freakish fairytales and hallucinogenic horror, Mr. Juraj Herz.

As another late entry to the unparalleled creative cinematic unison known in Europe as “the Czech film miracle”, Juraj Herz's 1969 feature film The Cremator was one of a clutch of certified cinematic literary adaptations that used the apolitical subjects of fantasy and surrealist horror to evade the com- munist censors’ abortive measures; dodging the overzealous cutting and burning process which poetically echoed the films own macabre and fantastical screenplay. Unifying a cast and crew of some of the Czech New Wave's leading lights, Herz’s macabre depiction of Ladislav Fuks' fictional account of a local crematorium boss whose hallucinogenic burning obsession with the afterlife is ignited by the Tibetan Book Of The Dead and intensifying manipu- lative Nazi propaganda is undeniably one of the greatest underexposed European horror films of all time.
Drawing similarities with other stark monochrome thrillers such as Roman Polanski's Repulsion, Herz’s comparatively untravelled classic also boasts a beguiling score and theme tune that remains one of the most memorable and spine-chilling melodic soundtracks by the country’s finest experimental soundtrack composer Zdeněk Liška (Malá Mořská Víla) providing the movement with one of its best loved signature scores. Featuring an ongoing partnership with studio conductor František Belfín (Daisies) and soprano singer Vlasta Soumarová Mlejnková (Marketa Lazarová), Liška puts his radical concrète and resampling techniques (see Ikarie XB1) to one side in favour of celestial choral and orchestral arrangements; menacing giallo-esque tension and recurring rhythmical motifs of Eastern bells and chimes illustrating Rudolf Hrušínský's Kopfrkingl character’s demise into murderous infatuation and the momentary cameo shots of the hallucinogenic death figure played by Helena Anýzová (Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders/Daisies).

From a country and era when isolated soundtrack music remained commercially unreleased Finders Keepers Records are proud to rescue, remaster and reincarnate this intense and timeless score by one of Europe's finest composers taking a rare excursion into horror territory as part of a filmography of more than 200 formerly unpressed film scores.

It has taken over four very active years for the people behind the Finders Keepers label family to finally return to what we still consider to be one of our favourite vinyl projects. The ongoing Disposable Music library subscription series is a series which pools some of the best emotive, comprehensive, previously unavailable instrumental music from the unmarked archives of experimental artists within the expanding Finders Keepers family and presents it as a series of limited uniformed archival vinyl discs. Like all the most influential library music labels on the 60s, 70s and 80s the music from DiM is sourced, compiled and produced catering to the requirements of the film, television and radio industries but as the interest in thematic instrumental 'picture music' seep deeper into the record collector psyche these limited multi-purpose discs are naturally recommended for whichever creative application you see fit. Each disc combines two full musical programmes sourced from both vintage archives and new exclusive recordings by contemporary artists specially paired to compliment the individual musical sensibilities and mutual affection.

This time Disposable Music are proud to bring you metronomic jazz made for the Swiss cheese information board; wind synth music designed for planetariums; possessed pastoral mechanical folklore sounds; primitive electric organ sci-fi music; Spaghetti Western themes for Scandinavian fashion shows; drum machine music for household appliances; unused Polish detective theme tunes; Gallic dreamscapes for graveyard dates; mouthorgan music for mutants; Eastern street music field studies, and a selection of commercially unreleased tracks that have been recycled from French and American horror soundtracks, short-run TV ads, one-off radio programmes and educational science programmes. Having learned, enjoyed and expanded since the first run of DiM we are very excited to unleash this custom collection to your ever expanding music tastes.

It’s clear that each recording of the latest volume of Disposable Music stands up on its own merit as well as complimenting the previously released volume. Like any library series there is no ideal place to start but at www.finderskeepersrecords.com we'd like to offer a limited number of subscription places to secure the next five records before they are distributed via our usual networks. With unlimited entry to the archives belonging to names like Ciani, Spoerri, Rollin, Epple, Korzynski and Massey, Disposable Music have taken the best in unadulterated, underexposed and unattached mood music and given these homeless compositions a place, purpose and time to thrive.

The music found on Graham Massey’s Hollingsville record was originally created for a twelve-part radio series on Resonance 104.4 FM . The series, Hollingsville, was conceived and presented by writer Ken Hollings and would focus each week on a different aspect of man's historical relationship with technology.  Informal discussions with a series of specially invited guests were accompanied by custom-built theme tunes by Massey, His approach was intentionally leaning toward the Bakelite and hot valve nostalgia of a some forgotten Expo or World’s Fair.

The resulting Hollingsville soundtrack exercises Massey’s authentic knowledge of original analogue machines in their rawest form and triumphantly draws comparisons with the likes of Henk Badings, Oscar Sala and Kid Balton from the pre-synth era of electric keyboards and tape manipulation. Enlisting the talents of long-running collaborator, opera singer Seaming To, Massey dons his seldom-used Massonix moniker and produces some of his best conceptual music yet which, by design, promises to withstand the tests of time and technological trend.

Music from New Zealand sounds like Dub and Reggae? Well, that’s not totally wrong. At least there are a lot of bands on the Kiwi Islands dropping laid back vibes und doing it the smooth way. But there was also a huge Indie and Rock scene with bands like Split Enz, The Chills and the outshining label Flying Nun Records. Not to mention the exciting Fusion scene and those Psychedelic bands from The Sixties. You see, there is a lot to discover. So have fun with Edition Nr. 17 which shows an impression of how NZ can sound: Listen to Lord Echo, Fat Freddys Drop and the Black seeds, just to name a few . And Welcome Gunnar! He is UV Funk’s first time co-host, that will join Philipp also in future editions from time time.

Despite his status as a key figure in the history of Japanese ambient music, Hiroshi Yoshimura's music remains tragically under-known outside of his home country. Empire of Signs – a new imprint co-helmed by Maxwell August Croy and Spencer Doran – is proud to reissue Yoshimura's debut Music for Nine Postcards for the first time outside Japan in collaboration with Hiroshi's widow Yoko Yoshimura, with more fully licensed reissues of Hiroshi's work to follow in the future.

Working initially as a conceptual artist, the musical side of Yoshimura's artistic practice came to prominence in the post-Fluxus scene of late 1970s Tokyo alongside Akio Suzuki and Takehisa Kosugi, taking many subsequent turns within Japan’s bubble economy afterward. His sound works took on many forms - commissioned fashion runway scores, soundtracking perfume, soundscapes for pre-fab houses, train station sound design - all existing not as side work but as logical extensions of his philosophy of sound. His work strived for serenity as an ideal, and this approach can be felt strongly on Music for Nine Postcards.

Home recorded on a minimal setup of keyboard and Fender Rhodes, Music for Nine Postcards was Yoshimura’s first concrete collection of music, initially a demo recording given to the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art to be played within the building's architecture. This was not mere background music in the prior Japanese “BGM” sense of the word, but “environmental” music, the literal translation of the Japanese term kankyō ongaku [環境音楽] given to Brian Eno’s “ambient” music when it arrived in late 70's Japan. Yoshimura, along with his musical co-traveler Satoshi Ashikawa, searched for a new dialog between sound and space, a new way of listening: sound not as an absolute, but as something that interlocks with a physical environment and shifts the listener’s experience within it. Erik Satie's furniture music, R. Murray Schafer's concept of the soundscape and Eno’s ambience all greatly informed their work,  but the specific form of tranquil stasis presented on releases like Nine Postcards is still difficult to place within a specific tradition, remaining elusive and idiosyncratic despite the economy of it's construction. This record offers the perfect introduction to Hiroshi's unique and beautiful worldview: it's one that can be listened to - and lived in - endlessly.

Anne, the second album By Toronto saxophonist and composer Joseph Shabason, is a tonal essay on degenerative illness. Delicately and compassionately woven with interviews of Shabason’s mother from whom the album takes its name, Anne finds its creator navigating a labyrinth of subtle and tragic emotions arising from his mother's struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Across the nine vivid postcards of jazz-laden ambience that comprise the album, Shabason unwraps these difficult themes with great care and focus revealing the unseen aspects of degenerative diseases that force us to re-examine common notions of self, identity, and mortality. 

Shabason’s uncanny ability to manoeuvre through such microscopic feelings is mirrored by his capacity to execute a similar tightrope-walk through musical genres. His music occupies a specific space that is as palpable as it is difficult to pin labels to. On Anne’s second track “Deep Dark Divide” rays of effected saxophone shine behind clouds of digital synthesizer that echoes the sound of jazz in the late 80s, but with a Jon Hassell-esque depth of sensibility that consciously subverts the stylistic inoffensiveness of that era. There is detail and idiosyncrasy beneath Shabason’s dawn-of-the-CD-era sheen that elevates the album far beyond a mere aesthetic exercise.

Still, the sounds on Anne are not so experimentally opaque as to stand in the way of the album’s through-line of sincerity and emotionality. When dissonance is employed it is punctual and meaningful, like on album-middler “Fred and Lil” where a six-minute cascade of breathy textures builds suddenly to an agitated growl, only to abruptly give way to Anne Shabason speaking intimately about her relationship to her own parents. Snippets of such conversations see her taking on something like a narrator role across Anne while the sound of her voice itself is sometimes effected to become a musical texture entwined into the fabric of the songs without always being present or audible.  The subsequent piece “Toh Koh” then drifts into playful disorientation as a lone female voice echoes the two syllables of the title, recalling the vocal techniques of composer Joan La Barbara, or even the light-hearted mantras of Lucky Dragons. From here the album veers back onto its aesthetic thoroughfare with “November” where Shabason lays muted brass textures atop a wavepool of electric chords provided by none other than the ambient cult-hero Gigi Masin, one of Anne’s many integral collaborators.

The serene tragedy of the album distils itself gracefully into the ironically titled album closer “Treat it Like a Wine Bar” wherein flutters of piano and mournfully whispered woodwinds seem to evaporate particle by delicate particle, leaving the listener with a faint emotional afterglow like a dream upon waking. There is a corollary to be drawn here with what it must be like to feel one’s own mind and body drift away slowly until nothing remains, while the collection of memories and abilities that we use to denote the “self” softens into eternity. On Anne, it is precisely this fragile exchange of tranquillity and anguish that Joseph Shabason has proven his singular ability to articulate.

Following in the very same footsteps as the mind boggling "Music To Watch	Girls Cry" and "Songs In The Key Of Death" mix CDs for Fat City Records and the original 5-star rated Finders Keepers compilation LP in 2001, Manc-based vinyl-vulture, recording artist and record producer Andy Votel enlists the skills of fellow B-Music DJ and Rare Disc Detective Doug Shipton to form a team of psychedelic librarians and cosmic-pop-quiz-elitists to run their new Twisted Nerve distant sister-label, leaving no progressive pebble unturned or record collection un-rifled.

Future compilations and re-issues will feature collaborative curators such as David Holmes, Cherrystones and Bob Stanley and further contributions from mystery A- / B+ pop-celebrity fanatics of outsider music and ultra-rare bakelite discs.
