In this episode, we will explore the synthesizer, looking closely at the history of this ubiquitous (and often debated) piece of musical technology, and investigating how and why it was first used in a variety African musics. Enabled by groundbreaking reissues of synth pioneers like William Onyeabor (Nigeria) and Hailu Mergia (Ethiopia), disco stars like Kris Okotie, and South African bubblegum superstars like Brenda Fassie, we will take you back to the 70’s and 80’s, listening to the birth of a distinctly African electronic sound.

Multi-genre producer born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia whose personal motto reads: “keep it simple”, is a part of the storied Soulection crew. Well known for his EP 'Esoteric', which dropped in summer 2012, the twentysomething year old has collaborations with other stellar artists like Sango and Mr. Carmack as well as various remixes of premium artists such as Erykah Badu, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean range from electronic chillwaved dance to spacey yet refined hip-hop. With a unique sound that seamlessly and effortlessly combines the perfect amount of bass, bounce and vocals, This Is Her becomes palatable to many.

The album has an overwhelming feminine vibe to it – light and airy, soft and beautiful. As LAKIM draws the soundscape for this project from some inspiring ladies in his life, the sounds come through as traits: calm & collected, sexy & sassy, grounded & driven, loving & unconditional.

Finlay Jamieson (aka FJ) is a Musician, Producer and DJ quickly becoming a household name in Glasgow, developing a unique multi genre sound. After moving to Glasgow in 2013 he’s come a long way starting as a musician and producer then honed in both talents to become a DJ. 
FJ has established himself as a resident for ‘Breathe’ djing in some of Glasgow/Edinburghs top clubs; La Cheetah Club, Stereo, Broadcast, Nicen’Sleazys, Room2, The Berkeley Suite, Cabaret Voltaire and many more. Finlay has released tracks on Tea Party Records, Prescribed Records and Bedroom Traxx. Finlay has also featured on lineups in London. He has promising projects for 2025 including plans to release a new Originals EP and some exciting and dynamic edits, Finlay is one to watch this year !
