@layla-rutherford has been on our radar for a while and finally played for us on the beach at Dekmantel Selectors in the summer. Her first EP came all the way back in 2014 and was an exemplary and delicate deep house offering co-produced by Floating Points. A year later, she returned the favour by providing vocals for his majestic Elaenia album. Since then she has been a regular on the likes of Worldwide FM and NTS with tasteful selections that cover downtempo, gospel, house and plenty in between.  

Layla recorded this week's all vinyl mix with two decks and an E&S mixer. It is a perfectly homely selection of soulful songs and gospel goodies interspersed with lo-fi rollers from Omar S, well swung US garage and funk nuggets from around the world. There is no formula and no predictable arc to this mix, just plenty of feel-good music served up with love. Perfect.

"I’ve been playing a lot of club sets recently so it was fun to channel my energy into something more deep, and play out tracks I wouldn’t play in the club. I tried my best to channel some contemplative summer-like feelings in the short period of spring like weather we had here in London last week.

I picture this being played in a few different scenarios - like when you’re getting ready in the morning on your way out of the house on a nice warm day, or after a long day in the sun at the park or the beach and you’re cooking at home, or coming back from the club in daylight and staying up to chat more with your pals.

All the music in this is worth checking out, but want to specifically shout out my friend Ryan Pierre’s new alias Conduit, which makes an appearance as the last track. There’s a really big track by Adam Pits, who I’ve only recently discovered but is a producer to watch out for - he also produces as Space Cadets with Lisene, both of whom are very talented. Other contributions include forthcoming music on Church by Biodive, new Philip Budny EP on Let’s Play House, a track by Fyoelk on MMODEMM which is a label I’m really into, new Slim Media Player on Pacific Rhythm, last years HVL from his Ostati album, and last but not least forthcoming Max D on 1432R (check this label out if you don’t already know, everything is great)."

When Lakuti came through for our Nowadays Nonstop Halloween party last year she delivered one of the most memorable moments of our entire year - a stunning three hour set that started at 9am and seamlessly crossed genres rooted in her deeply uplifting, spirited and soulful approach to dance music. 

Unfortunately, our normally trusty Tascam recorder couldn't handle the heat on that occasion and failed on us, meaning the spectacular sounds from that morning existed only in the moment.

Fast-forward six months and thanks to COVID-19 the only dance floor we can safely gather on is the digital one so we reached out to the Uzuri boss in the hope of being able to recreate the magic of that morning last Halloween and helping us shine us a light in super dark times.

Across the two hours in this mix she's done exactly that with a beautiful blend of feel-good boogie, delightful disco and sultry, sun-kissed deep house perfect for the balmy evenings of a New York City summer. Huge love to Lerato for being down to put this together for us and help keep us going <3
