After releasing his debut album „Roadkill Grill in Novosibirsk” on Asquithʼs Lobster Theremin imprint last year, Manuel Fischer returns to his very own label Ozelot, to take care of unfinished business. What has been started together with label mate Prioleau on the EP “Bassline Providerz 1” comes full circle one year later with Fischer taking sole control on “Bassline Providerz 3”. The Zurich-based labelʼs sixth release completes yet another trilogy, after the Black Belt Academy series that ran from 2017 to 2018, and marks an end and a beginning alike: from this point on, there will be no more trilogies, which opens up a whole lot of other exciting possibilities for the label. New artists, new concepts, new ideas. Moving forward, a more fluid approach allows to aptly react to all the inspiring things that are out there. Ozelot Ltd. unlimits itself, if you want.
But before all this will unfold, Manuel Fischer hammers it home with “Bassline Providerz 3”. As the EPʼs title suggests, the three, well, provided tracks are dancefloor material par excellence. You can listen to them wherever, of course, but while doing so, you will better be imagining yourself on a dancefloor; as dark and dingy as possible.
Take A2, the prophetically titled “Doomsday Preppers”, as an example: it is hard not to think about sound system culture and the best records that came out on Orsonʼs Version label while listening to the trackʼs broken structure and dub-informed bassline.
Perfectly executed in house tempo and with enough going on to transcend mere tool- status. Let me put it this way: you will recognize a roller when you hear one. “Doomsday Preppers” shares the A-side with “Dark Shark”, its slightly more nervous- sounding sibling that makes use of a complex drum pattern and a memorable melody youʼll might catch yourself whistling after listening. Finishing off the EP is “Barking Shiba in Shibuya”, a trance-informed hymn that launches into space and does not (want to) make an effort to come down again until the very end. With “Bassline Providerz 3”, Manuel Fischer crafts three strong arguments for the dancefloor. In June
2020, at a time where clubs are still closed and the opportunity to dance is limited to oneʼs own home, he reminds us of better times that were and better times that will be. These three cuts will make you want to get down to business.

The breadth of styles across the EP is impressive, taking in uplifting techno, mid-tempo electro, banging acid, and ambient, all created with classic analogue machines, suffused throughout with that warm tape sound and sweet sweet 303.

OBSCUUR is proud to welcome back the excellent Liza Aikin, after her stellar contribution to the “Withered Tales” album. Liza returns with her own release, a take on industrial techno named “Infirm Past”.
Her signature brand of techno spans over two original tracks, a force of sound cemented by how well it blends with the remix efforts of Swarm Intelligence and VSK. This is an EP covering all grounds, from immersive techno to harder-edge dance floor percussion.
First up is “Hospital Bed”, club ready and on the harder end of the scale, it delivers increasingly frustrating emotions through percussion packed with field recordings literally from the mechanisms within hospital machines. Swarm Intelligence adds the remix favour, with a growling bassline and broken techno cuts.
“Emmaus” follows up, with a sophisticated palette of layered pounding rhythms. Glued together with a hypnotically morphing melody, VSK steps up to the plate for the remix, plastering his well-known sound all over and slowing the drums to achieve a pure meditative hallucination.
Liza Aikin consistently strives to push her sound in new directions, the known mixing with the unknown, making this EP a rewarding listening experience both at the club and at home.

Shall Not Fade welcome the France based artist Jaymie Silk to the family with his EP ‘The Legend of Jack Johnson’’. 

As a true modern nomad, born in France to an Italian mother and a father from West Africa, as a French and Canadian citizen, Jaymie has quickly attracted attention to his music being immensely prolific through a number of remixes, EPs and albums.

This EP follows up on his video clip "Brain Dead", depicting the daily life of marginalized people, and his article for DJ Mag highlighting the relationship between racism and mental health for a black artist in the electronic music scene. Following a year 2020 marked by social movements, the death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement, the discussions around racism, the place of Black people and POC in the electronic music scene and the cultural appropriation, for Jaymie, Jack Johnson was to be the theme of this new opus.

Jack Johnson became the first African American to be able to compete against white men, and to win the world heavyweight boxing title between 1908 and 1915, in a country where segregation was strongly present, where interracial love were forbidden and black people were hanged daily. Based on period recordings by Jack Johnson, interviews with Mohammed Ali and radio broadcasts, Jaymie recounts the life of the boxer as he explores club rhythms mixing breakbeat and 808 (Knock You Down) and sounds reminiscent of late 1910s jazz, as in the track Jack Johnson, remixed by Byron The Aquarius. The B side approaches the life of the boxer under a more melancholic aspect with the song Illegal Love, evoking the illegality of interracial marriages, and the track Unforgivable Blackness, where Jaymie lets himself sing on guitar samples supported by tribal percussions that have made his musical trademark.
