On the morning of 24 May 2011, José "Zé" Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva, Amazon activists, were brutally murdered by two gunmen in the Brazilian state of Pará. The couple's environmental involvement began in 1997 with the creation of the Alta Piranheira Beach settlement.

Elected by their community, they led the fight to protect the forest, using non-violent means such as yelling at illegal loggers to defend their property. Sadly, their efforts came at a terrible cost: their lives. We will never forget these brave eco-warriors who gave their lives to protect our planet. Rest in Peace.
