Al Wootton returns to ZamZam with two more stunning sides of deep dubwise for late and later. It’s been a prolific year and a half since his last ZamZam, with multiple killer 12”s and an LP on his own Trule label, a four-tracker for Livity Sound, and two thrilling EPs as Holy Tongue alongside drummer Valentina Magaletti. Informed equally by UK dub, garage, roots reggae and techno, Al Wootton creates unique amalgams that always hit, and this 7” adds to that legacy in fine style.  

‘Every Knee Shall Bow’ opens with swimming percussion and echoing pads, ramping the tension before dropping into a potent, simmering 4/4 powerhouse, a perfect marriage of steppers and dub techno, at once visceral and cerebral, up front & deep, clear yet heavily atmospheric. Galloping drums, massive reverb splashes and FX, a wide-eyed drop into space… pure fire for the dancers. 

B Side 'Every Tongue Confess,’ drops the tempo down to 120, pulling us into pure heartbeat territory with drum kit, bass guitar, live percussion and keys all played by the artist and dubbed hands-on-desk style. A deep internal grounation in the timeless Count Ossie to Rhythm & Sound continuum, this is true healing music whether on a proper Sound or at home on the hi-fi.

With this playlist, I wanted to capture the feeling of fleeting intimacy—unspoken desires and the coexistence of love, lust, and introspection in a moment, rooted in the awareness of its impermanence. It’s about navigating the complexities of who we are when we let our guard down and the emotions we feel in the presence of someone who truly understands us, even if only briefly. 
My intention is to blend sensuality, vulnerability, and tension, with every track breathing emotion. It’s as much about the spaces between the songs as the songs themselves, inviting the listener to fill in the blanks.
There is an understated nostalgia, as if the music clings to something precious and ephemeral—a moment suspended in time. It’s a portrait of an elusive, intensely felt connection, like a love that feels infinite in the moment but inevitably fades into memory.

RBMA alum Distal returns with the latest manifestation of his Anarchostar project - an ambitious multimedia undertaking that combines music, videos, animations, illustrations and graphic novel storytelling. In Chapter 4, which encompasses Distal’s ‘Psychomagic’ EP, the Anarchostar goes full-on dystopian as “the most corruptible, vile and nihilistic groups left on the planet” seize control of all the land and resources. The EP’s opening track, “Psychomagic In An Adobe Home”, however strikes a more buoyant note, as expansive synth chords coalesce with vigorous vocal chops and hyper-charged drum sequences.

Glasgows own Petrichor makes a more than welcome return to his home label with the beautifully crafted Cloud Chamber EP. After a series of well received singles and a stunning debut album under his belt at Soma, Petrichor cemented his name within the labels ranks with his profound and delicate production style. This newest EP continues to see the talented producer go beyond the norm in his approach to his music. 

Title track Cloud Chamber opens the EP in a typically stylistic way. Petrichors clean, grooving drum patterns are joined by ethereal pads that sweep effortlessly into existence, each layer adding is own particular nuance to the track all designed to deliver a unique emotive piece. Keeping the organic, beat driven feel, Rah-Koh delves even deeper. Animated percussive elements provide a background for yet more stirring synth work from Petrichor who uses spacial, dubbed out sections creating a subtle and mesmerising track. Completing the EP, Petrichor reworks the previous track creating Koh-Rah a perfect trip into the ambient stratosphere where he creates an evolving and modulating soundscape built around glistening pads and processed sound fields. 

The wait may have been a long one but the final product from Petrichor is always worth it.
