Klapp Klapp (Lord of the Isles Remix)

A month after joining proceedings at our launch party for Sub Club's Nautilus Rising label, Lord of the Isles marks his return on Permanent Vacation with his Clearness of Love EP – a heedless release of four tracks that are easy picks for peaktime on the dancefloor. Club-orientated techno that still remains gentle, heavily steeped in nostalgia: from acid to ambient; and big beat to Balearic. Though perhaps not a blatant choice, the EP's closer "All I Need" is an undeniable highlight – slow-burning, earthly techno with a melody flowing through the bassline that grounds and comforts you all at once. The almost folkloric snippets of the wood flute keeps it reminiscent of Bavarian soundscapes in Recondite's Iffy.

Clearness of Love EP drops on 23rd October via Permanent Vacation.

Lord of the Isles "All I Need" - Boiler Room Debuts

Lord of the Isles is our guest in Hour 2 and the Scottish producer has racked up a string of releases across labels like Phonica, Shevchenko, Permanent Vacation and Japanese label Mule Musiq, on which he has a track featured on their forthcoming compilation. He had this to say about his mix;
"This mix was recorded at home with some records from artists and labels that i’ve been enjoying lately. An unreleased LOTI track that i’ve playing out recently has also sneaked its way in there. Listening back I can tell I’m longing for Summer already. Sounds like memories of a Summer gone by. Thanks for having me hope you enjoy. Nx"

Music is an innately social activity, even music created in the interest of self-reflection and meditation. Early in 2020, Australia's response to the rapidly evolving Covid-19 pandemic had the music community close its doors not only to the outside world, but to each other. By order of a government directive, all social gatherings - including live music performance, group rehearsal and collaborative recording - were to cease around the country.

It was unclear at the start of the pandemic what role peer-to-peer interaction played in the lives of Australian composers. Many already worked from home, well versed in the art of creating spaces of solitude in cities, of building environments conducive to self-reflection, innovation and creativity.

But how much do we really depend upon our community? In a world where self-isolation is no longer a personal choice, will creativity flounder, or flourish?

The recordings in this series are a document of these months and these reflections. A meditation on the way we exist and create, both together and in solitude. As with any creative work, it is up to the listener to draw what they will from these works, and to carry this forward into the world they now inhabit.

New releases will be added ongoing 1 by 1, fortnightly from October. Depending on how long this V2 lockdown goes, we may add even more. Who knows, we may continue this until 2022, forever in hibernation and isolation, yet not isolated.

Nick Klein is an electronic music artist interested in loud volume as form, as well as the sociology and ideology that is present in music subcultures. Netherlands based Klein runs radio programs, a label, and organizes events under the title "Psychic Liberation." He has released on the labels L.I.E.S., BANK, Unknown Precept, Viewlexx, Monorail Trespassing, and iDEAL. 

His latest release Actor-Network Theory on iDeal was recorded in 2018 and is the final record Klein made as a resident in New York, before moving to Den Haag. Taken from a caption on his Instagram, Klein describes the record as a weaving of “disparate sonic narrative[s] of dissociative opiated sleeping-bag retreats and anxiety fueled drum loops... Music for sleeping in a cold basement with a short blanket, coughing up a cigarette at Pier 94 in February, or lamenting the fickle nature of one’s own metabolism.” Actor-Network Theory can be found on iDEAL’s Bandcamp.
