The dream pop ofJulian opens this weeks list, and definitely doesn't outstay its welcome, leading into the more conventional pop of Sea Pinks. Then it's all change as the reggae sounds of Chronixx lead us into an extended dance section this week, starting with the slow burner of Oeil Cube, followed by EDM from Soulwax, and Real Lies, some house from Stefan Braatz, and then an older banger from Avicii who tragically died this week. Some terrific Afro-funk from Supergombo then takes us to the closing soulful jazz sounds of The Rugged Nuggets. I'm a big fan of Chronixx, and I really like the Julian track, but Supergombo's "Marquis Warren" gets track of the week for this week.

Julian was formed in the summer of 2015, in a hot and sweaty living room in Washington, DC. The brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Julia Leiby, Julian’s early songs had a minimal twee-pop feel reminiscent of Beat Happening. But as the band grew and evolved over the last few years, so did their sound. Currently joined by Cale Cuellar (Tall Friend) on drums and Eric Zidar (Tosser) on bass, Leiby’s songs have moved in a hazier, more atmospheric direction on Julian’s latest release, the Real Distance EP.

Recorded at Gravesend Recordings in Brooklyn, the five songs are brief—only one of them breaks the two-minute mark—and freckled with twinkling guitar lines that bring The Sundays to mind. A photographer by trade, Leiby’s ability to think visually heavily influences their music; the whole EP plays like a softly-lit dream. There’s a muted urgency in each track, as though Leiby is fit to burst with earnest romanticism. But there’s self-awareness, too. On “S,” the darkest and most driving song of the bunch, Leiby almost chants a mantra: “Don’t touch me, / I own this body. / Stay away, / I’m not your prey. / I’m stronger than you think.” And it’s in that space between light and darkness, softness and force, that Julian’s songs find their charm.

"These are strange, uncertain times. It might seem odd to be full of the joys of spring right now, given the constant newsfeed of anxiety. But hear me out. Our songs are often described as bittersweet. The words may be ambivalent, or even on occasion downright sad, but the melody will usually be buoyant and bright. Bearing this mind we decided to go all out, and make something unequivocally happy for once. This song is unapologetic in its lack of irony. It’s a little three minute detour, a portal into a suburban garden shaking off the last frost, sunshine bouncing off dewdrops, saturation dialled right up. Pure, undiluted, deeply unfashionable, guitar oriented pop. We recorded and mixed it ourselves earlier this month, tracking at our practice space, and decided to throw it out there as close as possible to the time of its making. It’s best listened to out of doors. So take it with you next time you go for a walk, drive, pedal boat swan ride or whatever. Preferably somewhere with terrible 4G. And allow yourself to be transported, just for a moment, from the sheer fuckery of it all."
