episode 174 : Sit + Listen session : A Love Supreme (Live In Seattle) by John Coltrane

A couple of weeks ago, after a good hang with my therapist, I had a Spencer C. Shoults-related panic attack. Driving felt dangerous, but I was able to make it to my studio and take an hour or so to chill out.

I was able to find some solace in creating a long loop of dense guitar textures and let it play as I calmed down. Once I finally relaxed a bit, a few melodic / textural ideas came to me, so I ironed them out and created this performance. I added a few extra layers and, later that night, made a couple of mixes.

I sent them to my friend and collaborator, Daniel Farris, to see if they sounded like shit or not. He liked the same one I did, but asked if he could take a crack at it. How could I refuse?

I love what he did, and I’m happy to share it with you today, in honor of Spin’s retrospective at the Birmingham Museum of Art (which will be up through November 12th).

I know that, on the surface, this might not seem different than any of the other aggro-ambient pieces I occasionally share, but rest assured that Spin -- by way of inspiration and execution -- is very much of this music. And this performance, recorded in one-take, was me telling the fusty air that I miss him, I love him, and that I’m not over his absence one goddamn bit.
