Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a powerful reminder that self-respect and integrity are key, and that we should be aware of the pitfalls of materialism and objectification in interpersonal relationships.

SUPERPENDEJOS, the mysterious duo that came to the Kingdom from another planet were responsible for astrophysics, solar systems and the identification of a new music to enlighten people. With the help of great ruler they became “High Priests of the Sun”, and recorded some elliptical space-time music in stone discs which were buried in the city of Tulum (in the Mayam region) for ages in order to avoid the seizure of them by Spanish conquistadores. Ages ago our technicians managed to identify these diamonds and after careful examination in SHANGO RECORDS laboratories we’re giving you “EN ORBITA EP”, a Tropical intergalactic planetary journey beyond space and time!

This English producer discovered his passion for house music later than most, but his love of music has been a lifetime.
