Prince Fatty and the Horseman are well known for their hip hop versions such as "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" as used in the infamous Breaking Bad series, DJ Muggs personal reggae favourite "Insane in the Membrane" and many more Raggamuffin specials.

It is well documented that the DNA of hip hop has its roots in dub and reggae from the concept of versions, sound systems, selectors and MCs and so on. New York and the East Coast has had large Jamaican community since the 60s the musical influence is similar to us here in the UK.

The Jamaica Funk club night hosted at the Fox and Firkin celebrates and high lights the musical journey as Reggae inspired Hip Hop in the early 80s and how the roles changed as Hip Hop developed and went mainstream it inspired the Jamaicans in reverse. Artists such as Super Cat and Shabba Ranks confirm this on vinyl in our collections.

A live dub tutorial, showing the fundamental principles of recording and mixing, discussing the concept of versions, alternative mixes and how to cut dub plates and specials.
Prince Fatty will disect and breakdown some of his favourites such as Shimmy Shimmy Ya and other songs live with the original files using a mixing desk to demonstrate the construction and musical instrumentation involved. Detailed recording sessions will be revealed with legends such as Gregory Issacs, WInston Francis, Cornel Campbel, Marcia Griffiths, Big Youth and more.

Nick Manasseh is a pioneer DJ, Radio Broadcaster, Record Producer and Sound Engineer complemented by a Jedi knowledge of Reggae music. Having worked and recorded many great artists such as Dennis Brown, Johnny Osbourne, Sugar Minott, Earl 16 and sound system MCs such as Josie Wales, Charlie Chaplin, Brother Culture and Brigadier Jerry.

Nick Manasseh alongside Prince Fatty stay true to analog traditions and preserve the recording and mixing techniques pioneered by the greats such as King Tubby and Scientist.

Club Night Sets from both Prince Fatty and Manasseh to follow with MCs Horseman and Brother Culture, special guest DJ sets from Josh from The Skints and Prince Fatty's DJ Posse featuring the turntable skills of Natty and Noah.

For the first half of the twentieth century, Ellis Island stood as the gateway to America. For some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home. 

Directed by acclaimed artist JR, ELLIS tells the story of one such migrant. Starring Robert De Niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned Ellis Island hospital complex, now home to JR’s Unframed art installation. It’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.

Entwined with the narrative is a score composed by Woodkid, performed and co-written by Nils Frahm. The delicate piano motifs of Winter Morning I culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the B-side are the foundation for De Niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern America. 

There’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the Sea Watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees. 

Following a screening as part of Nils’s Barbican Weekender, the ELLIS score will be out July 8th, the same week as America’s great federal holiday. It will be available via Erased Tapes as a mini album on CD, vinyl and in digital format containing a 12-page picture booklet.


IN THE ARTISTS’ OWN WORDS:

Nils Frahm: ‘The opportunity to work on JR´s fantastic short film ELLIS came through my good friend Yoann aka Woodkid. We agreed on recording the piano parts in my studio in Berlin and so it happened that JR and Woodkid were guests at Durton studio on a wonderful late summer day in 2015. We managed to record all the crucial elements that day. The music fell in our laps and melted with the images: a wonderful experience. The film has stuck in my head ever since; it moved my heart and changed my soul.

A couple of weeks later I had to cancel a trip to Brussels because of a terror warning; all events got cancelled and I stayed home, having an unexpected day off. I felt rather depressed that day, thinking that the Europe I knew was already gone. I sat down at the harmonium, listened to Robert De Niro’s voice and played for the rest of the day. The result is ‘Winter Morning II,’ the B-side of the ELLIS soundtrack release.

Robert says it all in 17 minutes. We are not facing a refugee crisis. We are facing a crisis because we do not embrace, we do not sympathise and we cannot give up fear. Art can encourage so I hope this project will help fight the fear in all of us.’

Yoann Lemoine, aka Woodkid:  ‘Ellis is my second collaboration with JR after the New York City Ballet piece for Les Bosquets. I initially wanted this piece to sound like it was recorded on an old piano that we found in the ruins of Ellis Island, in the restricted area that is not open to the public, where JR pasted the pictures on the walls for the film Ellis.

I had worked with Nils before and I wanted him to create a sound for this piano part that I composed that was extremely gentle and organic. I wanted the listener to hear the mechanisms, the breathing of the instrument. I wanted it to be imperfect, to sound like a ruin, a trace, an echo, the way the pastings on the walls seem to be ghosts, almost imperceptible.

After a few rehearsals, Nils stripped down my piano parts and we removed almost all orchestration around the piano. He then worked on the extended version that is his interpretation of my piece, with Robert de Niro’s vocals.

Because this film and this recording is historically meaningful, it was important for us to create this piece as an echo to the immigration situation in Europe, and decided to release it in support of Sea Watch.’

ABOUT THE ALBUM:

April 2013 will see Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk, the pioneer of Continuous Music, return with his first release on UK’s contemporary music label Erased Tapes. Entitled 'Corollaries', the album was recorded and produced with the help of Peter Broderick, Nils Frahm, Martyn Heyne and label founder Robert Raths, who decided it’s time to share the great musical legacy of their new found friend. Or as Melnyk put it: ‘Where were you guys when I was thirty?’

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

‘My first encounter with Peter was at the Ambientfestival in Cologne, when I came into the cathedral where he was playing along with Nils. I was amazed and enthralled by the beauty and power of their music. The colours and majesty of the cathedral coupled with their music made it a great experience I will never forget. The music seemed to come out of the great stone pillars of the cathedral and from the very walls. It was an ecstatic moment. And I was so pleased that after his show, Peter came and spoke with me about my music and things, which was so nice since he is a gentle soul. Some time later, Peter contacted me with an invitation to come visit him in Berlin and try creating some music together. 

I arrived in Berlin with some apprehension over what our collaborations would be like. I had not played improvisation with other ambient musicians before, having worked solo for all these past years. So it was such a relief to start playing at his studio and hear his wonderful input. He was adding a beautiful and delicate dust cover of sounds and pearly effects that cast a lovely sparkle over the piano music --- I loved it.  

My piano music was happy with this new dimension of sounds. Peter just felt, in his natural way, the right things to do. It was a thrill to hear Continuous Music in some new clothes! And with the addition of Nils and Martyn, we all felt the beautiful spell of the communal flow as the music carried us into wonderful spaces.’  – LUBOMYR MELNYK

The album artwork was created by American contemporary artist Gregory Euclide, best known for his sculptural relief work and cover art for Bon Iver. Euclide was listening to early mixes of the recordings on repeat whilst creating the two paintings contained in the record, describing his visual counterpart to Melnyk's work as 'a continuous cycle of growth and decay'.
