IMMORTALITY
What is it you are asking (seeking) for, Athanasia*,
at my balcony in front ("by my doorstep")
you don't give me any attention ("you don't give me the time of day")
and how (can) my heart bear (it)
you were loved in the world by kings, poets
and not (a single) little twig of mint*, have you ever given them

You are hard (harsh), like the death's grasp
but times came when we believed (in) you deeply
Every generation wants (you) to become their own 
good-looking lady (you), that noone wan you (over)

What is it you are asking (seeking) for, Athanasia

what strange sacrifice does life owe you
Thirsty "Croesuses", humble pilgrims came
and from your garden's fountain, you never gave (allowed) them a drink 

* Athanasia : name of a Woman, but also the Greek word for : "immortality".
* mint :  It was very common for people to cut a little twig, just couple of mint leaves and hold or wear on their clothes. You would give some mint to someone (like you would a daisy I guess in yester days) to show love and care (mint is also renown for its healing purposes) so, to sort of keep that person safe from harm's way.

ma tempi giunsero in cui credettero forte in te

Bellezza, sicché nessuno ti ha ancora conquistata.

Che vai cercando, Immortalità, davanti al mio balcone
di quale strano sacrificio ti è la vita debitrice
Vennero Cresi assetati umilmente in ginocchio
ma la fonte del tuo giardino frescura non gli diede mai.

Tu ne me prêtes aucune attention et, cependant, comme mon cœur t’est fidèle !
Les rois et les poètes du monde entier t’ont chérie
Mais toi, tu ne leur as jamais offert la moindre brindille de menthe.

Tu es sèche comme le poing de la mort
Il y eut pourtant des époques où nous avons tout espéré de toi, 
Chaque génération a voulu faire de toi sa jeune femme
Aucune jamais n’a pu te conquérir.
