For episode 58 of FRiends and Family, we have Oklahomie Sick Nick cutting it up. Nick has long been an Oklahoma dance music addict. He started raving in the 90s, and he is still just as excited about new electronic music as he was back then. He's always digging for new stuff. He's into everything...techno, jungle, drum and bass, acid, breaks, footwork, juke, edits, club, and he plays it all out! He keeps fun in the foreground, and he creatively blends different sounds together all while keeping the energy steady. It's been a long time coming having him on for the series. He's played our parties before here in Oklahoma City, and he's been a day one supporter of the label. This mix is his set, blending in after another local DJ FRiend of the label @chromedex from one of Nick's Beats and Brews nights he holds at Norman brewery Lazy Circles. He's delightfully in full Sick Nick modus on this recording. Strap in and enjoy!

For episode 60 of our FRiends and Family, I'm happy to have a pillar of the US underground @djmitchsmith . Mitch lives in Denver, vis a vis Florida. He's a real Florida dance music enthusiast and has shown me so much of the IDM-miami-bass-techy-housey fusion that the state has gifted to the world of dance music. He djs alongside @wngdu (see FRiends and Family Ep. 21) in Denver as Loudmen. They've brought @billconverse, @jonnyfromspace, DJ Fitness, and others into Denver, and they have huge plans (can't reveal yet) for Denver this summer. So if you're in the area...TIP!

Mitch Smith: FRiends and Family Ep. 60

For episode 61, we have OKC close scene co-conspirator @crkdjw. I met Garrett when he came to one of our Critical Mess parties a while back. I didn't know who he was, but I just saw the way he was dancing and really listening to the music that he knew what was up. While trying to not make too eager of moves, I went up and told him we gotta chop it up. 

When I think of the most exciting DJs in OKC right now, Garrett is always there in my mind. He has an appetite for brain-scratchy sounds, drummy techno, with a dose of minimal inflections...and there's always excitement selection-wise given his broad taste in music outside of the dance floor. What we're all about! He's been really exercising some restraint lately, and this mix shows where he's been at in his bag lately. Excellent music, enjoy!

“The nature of our current time, amplified by social media and pop culture, has generated a concept of the artist as a winner or idol. In order to legitimize themselves, musicians are exhorted to follow ‘celebrity canons’: having a flashy image or making flashy music, being charismatic, being successful. The creative process is often seen as esoteric and associated with cryptic and vague concepts such as ‘inspiration’, ’talent’, ‘expression’ or ‘freedom’, so it seems music is created magically, in a spontaneous way.
As a reaction to this phenomenon, the interview excerpts in this podcast come to remind us that the music profession still consists for a lot of us on a profound devotion. The stress is not on the subject but on the sonic object they generate through constant dedication, a nerd and perseverant investigation, many times in loneliness, where frustration, failure and alienation take place. The compositor or interpreter is not anything but a mere channel of expression of something much bigger than their own persona.
Parallelly, the tracks chosen for this podcast also resonate with this idea. This music arouses admiration and interest precisely because it doesn’t look like a desperate claim for attention but a beautiful consequence of this commitment with something pure that comes from a superior order. The popularity or circumstance in which the artist lives is something absurd in comparison to what is laying in the realm they can enter when they make music.”
Conservatory trained composer, vocalist and pianist Marina Herlop began her career by giving a contemporary flair to compositions from Debussy and Chopin, tipping her hat to the canons of the romantic era.

Ensemble Podcast 08/25 w/ Marina Herlop

For episode 63, I am very excited and honored to have a special mix by Oklahoma City major head Stin from @chatpile . This is just over an hour of a musical history of all shades of underground freak rock/punk/metal from Oklahoma City. Beginning in the 70s and ending with our current moment. As someone who stepped into this chronology as a fan and fellow noise-maker in the late 00s/early 10s, I personally found it invigorating to understand on a deeper sonic level where the sounds were coming from that we were all making. Today you will hear people talk about the loss of regional sound identities, but I’m hoping that the act of drawing from the ghosts of your local alternative spheres has not completely died out. After listening to the mix, it seems like those connections you find with the roots of a scene happen in many different ways and are often unconscious. For example, playing in bands with people slightly older than you, finding the same records at the local shops, attending gigs together and soaking up the same influences. There are bands, people, and labels mentioned in here that make up the core of my music-loving DNA. There were so many older freaks who were taking care of me as a teenager while I was out on a school night at The Conservatory (legendary OKC venue) catching music from around the world at wildly cheap door costs. And then I imagine that happening to those who were older than me when they were kids…a beautiful freaky cycle. 

I can’t mention enough how much Stin is a pillar of our local music scene in OKC. He ran a tape label called Nerd Party, which he mentions. @dusthousestudio is where I and so many people in the City recorded our records (Chat Pile still records there!). I wouldn’t have seen so many awesome bands that came through OKC in the 00s and 10s, if it weren’t for Stin and his friends nudging me to go. The Speed Falkon tape that he put out (he plays a track off of it) is one of my all-time favorite OKC underground installments. I played that tape OUT. And I just checked…it’s not even listed on Discogs. There are some real delights here that you won’t hear outside of Stin’s bedroom. Truly honored to have him open up his media collection to us with this Okie curatorial lens and for the bits and bobs shared in between the music. I hope you enjoy, and since he says he’s down, we will definitely be inviting him for another episode of specialties. But first, sit back and enjoy the sounds of the OKC underground as selected by Stin!

"little sounds in huge expansive spaces"

This mix was my musical extrapolation of this quote. As I put together the tracks in the mix, the idea of small sounds in big spaces became more metaphysical, as a metaphor for memory and nostalgia. Small, seemingly insignificant events in our past can expand in significance over time, informed by our experiences later on in life, and with our emotions acting as a tool of reverberation, extending their presence in our lives far past their time of occurrence. What begun as a process of selecting tracks that quite literally feature "small sounds in big spaces" soon morphed into a dig into my distant past, to nearly 20 years ago when I first started learning to DJ. I pulled from the mnml tracks that had an important influence on my formative years, their impact can still be heard in the contemporary tracks I play today, all of them bouncing next to each other in this nearly 2hr musical collage.

“A recording from pe:rsona in France, one of the most memorable sets of the summer for me!! 

I felt a connection to this crowd in particular and that’s not something that happens often. A lot of this is down to the people behind this festival, the pe:rsona/Positive Education crew are very intentional with what they do, they champion and support a lot of artists who aren’t necessarily ‘big names’. I think this cultivates a crowd that trusts in their curation, they’ve fostered this really special energy. 

I played on Friday night between two live sets, Christian Coiffure and Renslink. They are two incredible acts to be sandwiched in-between which inspired the set to evolve the way it did.
