First part of a two-part stage, which is why it lacks an outro. Supraventricular tachycardia is a condition where "you will usually feel your heart suddenly start racing and going very fast, then stop or slow down abruptly", says the NHS!

Tools: this one is another one done completely on the iPad. Started it on a 12-hour plane flight. Ended up taking about maybe 15 hours over a few days... bleh!

Recorded in Churchill College on a Steinway. This and Intimate are the only two so far that use live instruments. This one was a single take. I don't mean I did only one take (in fact it was rather the opposite), but that the entire piano part was a single recording. If you thought the strictness of Rhythm Doctor was hard, imagine playing a 3 minute song where every note you press needs to adhere to that strictness...

I recently bought a Roland R-05 with part of my gamedev revenue (secondhand, what a bargain), for hopefully doing more live music for our games! So thank you to all who donated to Rhythm Doctor / bought my apps, this is a direct result of that haha.

This track is not part of anything. It is just me making up stuff on a piano to test the recorder: and i think it works pretty well. 10/10 would buy again. I think you should buy one too. But you can decide for yourself! (if you ignore my crappy improv - you can tell i've been listening to Kygo lately..)

Heard this song I think a few years ago, and I liked it and thought this would be perfect for a cover. It's one of those slow buildup songs (see: Sometime Around Midnight by Toxic Airborne Event, Trees by INXS, and of course MCR's Welcome To The Black Parade) that lends well to making the arrangements and harmonies more and more complicated as the song progresses.

So I've been working on this arrangement for like six months now on and off throughout uni. I just really wanted to make sure I could capture the dynamics of the song, especially in the post-chorus buildup, which every other piano cover of this song I can find seems to have skimped on. There was a lot of tweaks and changes throughout the last few months to try and make the dynamic changes really come out.

The original also has a very sparse and satisfying quarter-time kick-snare, which I tried to simulate by timing the release of the pedal on beat throughout the song lol. You'll hear it as a muffled bass kick in the video. I like to think of it as the piano equivalent of fingerstyle drumming on the guitar.

For the most part I've tried to keep it as faithful to the original as possible, especially in keeping the left hand bass line going throughout the verse instead of it decomposing into generic root-fifth-root stuff. But after the buildup I added a melody of my own in the right hand as the left hand plays the original syncopated theme! Started out as a coordination challenge, but as the melody got tweaked again and again I thought it ended up actually fitting quite nicely, haha.

And finally it goes into crazy arpeggios. The fun thing about arranging is you choose the difficulty of your covers! And this section was a good challenge to say the least.

This is a short version of the full song, since for the Steam Demo we didn't want to introduce too many gameplay mechanics yet. 

We wanted something that have a tempo so slow that it would be challenging to play along to, to emphasise that slow doesnt necessarily mean easy in Rhythm Doctor. But we didn't want it to be boring, so we needed a style that would let us add lots of dense rhythm switchups despite the slow tempo. This chill-yet-intense genre is what we ended up choosing to base this track on.
