Jock Van Vliet: The Lake Within The Lake
In the world of flora, Stellaria Nemorum is the name for forest wall. 
However, the music that Joanna Pavelescu makes under this Latin alias is
certainly not for wallflowers. In fact, the basses and beats on her latest EP "The Lake Within The Lake" 
would blow any kind of vegetation out of the ground.

The titles of both the EP and the
tracks give a good indication of what the listener can expect: a pretty surreal, 
imaginative music trip through time and space. 
A dark journey full of disturbing creaks and moans and industrial 
sounds that occasionally start a surprise attack. With beats that evoke memories of the machine-experimental 
of Speedy J and sometimes relentlessly
grim, Scorn style distorted bass. 
However dark and heavy 
the ambiance is the addition of light with spatial sounds.
  As an accomplished alchemist, Stellaria Nemorum has managed to find an excellent balance in this.

The remixes also come from the Antiloungekamp,
The Hague quality label for electronic music. 
They are from Charly & Gallus (with whom it all started years ago), 
Olaf Wempe (Stellaria Nemorum's former partner in crime as the duo WG @ EET) 
and Foresense, who provides a surprising final chord with jungle beats. 
They all retain the bass-averse character, but are a 
little less heavy in terms of atmosphere.
Light at the end of the dark sonic tunnel. After which a listener with a cleansed soul and new energy can face 
everyday life again. 
After many years of musical pause, Stellaria Nemorum came back strongly with this extensive EP.

The Altitudes was commissioned by Ina GRM as part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. The Current Inside”, Marja Ahti's sophomore album for Hallow Ground, plays with the theme of currents - connecting and animating movements in the form of air, water and electricity. It approaches sound as a poetic medium, focusing both on the experience of sound as form and energy and on a loosely narrative arc, suggesting a riddle on the relations between the sounds. It implements alternative as well as intuitive tunings, analog and digital synthesis, recordings of sonorous spaces and vessels, electromagnetic fields transduced into audio, acoustic close-ups of elements in motion and other field recordings. Fluently connecting quite diverse sound sources, Ahti's music lingers in a zone between abstract sonorities and vaguely familiar acoustic environments.
The first half of the album consists of ”The Altitudes”, a piece commissioned by Ina GRM for Présences Électronique and Sonic Acts. It was inspired by descriptions of the layers of Earth's atmosphere. Imagining a movement through layers of air, the piece unfolds with a slow intensity, interweaving concrete sounds and closely tuned electronic sonorities. Traversing the altitudes, a landscape of entangled elements, masses and currents emerges. The air around us has weight and it presses against everything it touches. As gravity pulls it to Earth, it is sensed as pressure. The rotation of the planet, the angle of the sun at any new moment sets the elements in motion in a chain reaction. 
The other side consists of four shorter pieces. ”The Currents” opens with a dance of trembling charged movements. ”Lost Lake” extracts resonant tones from a trail of close-up recordings of winter environments, while ”Fluctuating Streams” channels streaming air in different forms. The closing track, ”Sundial”, could be construed as the steady turning of the planetary angle towards the sun, unfolding through fragments of everyday activity against the backdrop of piercing, slowly twisting, suspended tone.
Marja Ahti (b. 1981) is a musician and composer based in Turku, Finland. Originally from Sweden, Ahti has been a part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years in different constellations. She is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner and as a member of the Himera artist/organizer collective. Her critically acclaimed 2019 solo debut, Vegetal Negatives, explored a new formal language and sonic palette inspired by a short text by René Daumal.

Cycling is enjoying a surge in popularity in these pandemic days, and this collaboration examines some of the linkages and soundscapes this boom has entailed. It stems from an online residency hosted by Iklectik in London and Lacking Sound festival in Taipei, which brought together UK and Taiwanese artists to explore quarantine in May of 2020. With Taiwan one of the world's major producers of bikes, and Londoners forced onto waiting lists to purchase one Kate Carr and Sheryl Cheung decided to examine their respective cities of London, and Taipei through the prism of the bicycle. This piece explores the bicycle as a musical instrument, as well as an object which can somehow speak to this particular moment with the pandemic. It offers a glimpse of our real and imagined cycling soundscapes as we are plunged into, and attempt to escape the 'new normal'.

A visit to Rome’s 16th-centry Villa d’Este provokes feelings of circularity, cycles, connections. Cardinal d’Este not only sought to revive and surpass ancient Roman architecture and design, his villa was literally made from the past: marble and statues from the ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s nearby 2nd-century villa provided an ample supply of antiquities. But it’s not just the recycling of 1500-year-old materials and ideas that gives Villa d’Este its overwhelming sense of eternal return. Its complex system of fountains, water jets, canals and pools is a feat of engineering, providing a constant flux without the need for any pump. 

Cycles of additions, modifications and imitations have never stopped. Abandonment and degradation seem always to be matched by renewal and renovation. Ivy and moss have advanced in layers, overgrown and flowing. Twentieth-century copies of ancient Roman fountains have taken the place of ‘real’ statues sold off to sit in museums. Like a spiral slowly unravelling, the villa has never stood still. But it’s the invariable, but everchanging, stream of water that most strongly signals the villa’s rhythm of succession. Its climax at The Fountain of Neptune is overwhelming, and it’s here that one might find some present-day meaning from this cascade of sounds, shapes and ideas from almost 2000 years ago.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the 21st century’s third decade, quotidian life goes on even though the connections between us have suddenly and simultaneously expanded and diminished. After decades of excess and misbalance, COVID-19 is sweeping across the globe but still managing to discriminate. Everything is upside down but the bottom is still the same. The loop narrows at the same time that it increases the breadth of its grasp. Scale is everywhere and local, all at once. Seasons shift. Disequilibrium uncurls. Fairness is still unfair. 

In the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, life endures despite grim reports of our daily tally. We’re drawn into a 5-kilometre radius under a ‘lockdown’ intended to reign in the virus. Time and space stretch and meld. Boundaries blur and sequences bend. Familiar is new and strange is normal. Circularity, cycles, connections. Meta and micro. A daily walk on drawn out paths. A treadmill in its groove. A school bell rings familiar tones but echoes on its own. The big and the small. The loud and the quiet. The seen and the unseen. The haves and the have-nots. And the hopeful call for The Great Reset.
