After an unmistakably calming first half, the album journeys somewhat darker, more introspective, without drawing away from the vastness of its initial input.

Following the release of Future Terrain last month, it is the time of the album in which I have worked over the last year and the first months of 2015. I continued my work in the pursuit of purely atmospheric expression, in an attempt to convey this vital experience that pushes us forward in one direction within the labyrinth of life, the way that I call The Flowing Path. Splendid Labyrinths is a deep reflection on our journey through life, change, growth, discovery, movement and transformation at every step along the way.

STYLE 
Vast beatless zones and undulating velvet expanses: Splendid Labyrinths is an album of ambient immensity and immeasurable time. Max Corbacho's latest release features heaving multi-layered drones that seem to drift in and out of focus and intensity like slow-motion sunlight filtering through gracefully moving storm clouds. These opulent sonic textures are of impressive fathomless density, they seem to stretch away into infinity and endless darkness whilst at the same time presenting more imminent audio formations that waft and furl like intangible filaments of smoke or warm currents in water. The ordering of the tracks is interesting: two long-form recordings on either side of the relatively brief Earth Womb and Wave of Reflection, this seems to reflect the cover image where a tight core is surrounded by larger structures. Much of the tonal nature of the music is uplifting, warm chords and heavenly synth voices suggestive of light and gentle ascendance holding the most proximate regions. 


ARTWORK	The front cover of Splendid Labyrinths features a vivid yellow-orange, mandala-like multi-disc bloom comprised of overlapping labyrinth discs. This is very much an image of many depths: the complexity of the layers revealing forms and patterns that arise and fall away according to one's focus. On one level, a simple flower design of twelve regular petals; on another level a three-dimensional bubble of infinite depths encircling a bewildering black hole. 

OVERALL 
Inspired by the landscape and sky of his origins in southwest of Spain, ambient master Max Corbacho composes music that references "the essence of the great and ineffable mystery of our existence." Splendid Labyrinths perhaps manages this with greater effect than ever. Released on the heels of Future Terrain, a track that "emerged in parallel ...during the long building sessions for Splendid Labyrinths", this latest album holds six recordings, four of which all hover somewhere around the fifteen-minute mark. Two shorter pieces lie in the central hub closer to six and eight minutes each Promotional material talks of "an atemporal quality" explored in recent releases following "maybe only the breathing and the pulse of the artist," very apt here. So I’ve had this idea for years, and finally its coming to life, thru a release on Touched. I wanted to do something bigger with my musical power for a good cause. I have an amazing network of musical friends, and almost everybody I asked to get involved said yes. I just want to make a statement, we all have power to do something good in this world, just think about it what it is for yourself and think of ways to make it happen. 

3 years ago I adopted a rottweiler from the shelter, he was in the shelter for 2 years. From all the dogs I took walks with I connected the most with him. And although he is a handful, I love him more than anything in the world. And it opened up my eyes even wider how I connect with them, mostly better than with humans. 

I just love animals, and dogs in particular. It was clear I wanted to pick a charity that helps dogs, nothing grabs me more by the throat than the horrific situation for dogs in the dog meat trade in Asia. I supported the soi dog foundation a couple of times already so this was a logical choice to focus on them. They do amazing stuff in the whole of Asia. 

Mission Statement of soi dog: 
To improve the welfare of dogs and cats in Asia, resulting in better lives for both the animal and human communities, to create a society without homeless animals, and to ultimately end animal cruelty.

Sleeplaboratory is a compilation series that we launched in 2019 and the success of this effectively launched our printed gatefold-LP style CDrs which featured all of last year. The Sleeplaboratory1/.0 compilation was created as a special celebration for our fiftieth release and we enjoyed the concept so much, that we decided to run another one. Sleeplaboratory2.0 continues the themes of sleep, rest and personal reflection, not necessarily aiming to meet the current trend of mindfulness and well-being but instead, it intends to rest the listener in a way that is appropriate to them.

The idea was originally came about after our label owner Harry and his wife had a baby daughter, Isla. Harry curated a full-length compilation to help soothe his daughter to sleep and whilst Isla hasn’t needed much of a helping hand where sleep is concerned, he was keen to continue this project as a series. Throughout much of last year, we have been working on a follow-up, inviting artists to meet this sleepy brief of minimalist Ambient tones. We’ve invited familiar label artists back as well as established names and perhaps you’ll see that the odd one or two go on to have releases with us later this year.

I nodded ascent and began to stare. Of course, I did. I always followed Grandfather’s instructions. As did almost everybody else. 

I concentrated on the flame. Grandfather spoke, but what, I cannot remember. Then I heard him move. He stopped, spoke again, and walked slowly on. Now I lost track of him, lost to the flame. The flickering grew brighter and brighter, the darkness around me swelled. Suddenly, I was aware that the blackness held within it colours that changed in waves. But still I stared. And then I could smell…Grandmother’s perfume, a bonfire of leaves, then new-mown grass, freshly fallen snow…. I tried desperately hard to remember them all, I knew that this was something Grandfather would want to know. 

I awoke sometime later. Grandfather had draped a travel blanket across my shoulders. It was warm and tickly. When he saw me stir, he got up from his chair by the dying fire. “Bed, I think, yes?” 

As he tucked me in, I told him of the colours (gold, blue, red, and green) and the smells, although by then I couldn’t be certain of any. He smiled. “Good.” 

In the doorway, he stopped, silhouetted against the landing light. “Next time, no candle. You are ready to see.” 

He was right. I did. I still see them now.
