Once upon a time, myself and DIck 'Magik' Johnson ran and recorded for Shaboom Records straight outta Lythm St. Annes / Blackpool. I can't remember what this mix was for but we got a load of CDs pressed up and probably gave them away in Miami. I think it will have been recorded in Dick's basement studio B2B. It's banging.

Flash Atkins' Strolling brings the soul with a track that is as loose and easy as a Mediterranean summer. Amy Collins sings of an early morning walk home after a loved up encounter on the dance floor as Dan Goldman lays the keys and grooves for some disco love.

Flash Atkins is a drunkard, drug user and general wrong’un. A super hero who has fallen from his purple patch in the 80s to purples stains on his pants in the 00s where he now lives in a campervan in a field in Yorkshire.

He is also the alter go of Paper Recordings’ Ben Davis and Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is the first single from his forthcoming album Paper album “The Life and Times of Flash Atkins”. Each track title is named after a chapter of a short story to be published as an accompaniment to the long player.

Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is a slo-mo tech heavy chugger that is locked down with rock sold beats and a throbbing side-chained bass. The track builds with synth lines before a sampled female vocal brings in some sparse melody and reinforces the hypnotic rhythm. An acid line adds to the tension before the reaching it’s peak with all the elements hitting home.

The Deaf Boys Dub goes down a more stripped back route with a Moog synth riff and techy hats along with the sampled vocal. A ricocheting snare heralds the arrival of the sub and things crank up a gear. It’s proper 4am lose yourself in the smoke club music as the synth riff filters in and out.

Doc L. Junior is a Norwegian legend who’s not been active for a few years but is back with a wallop. Deep, synthy and a hint of 80s, this is big room music that brings to mind So Get Up by Underground Sound of Lisbon.

Finally, Richard Seaborne turns in a classic sounding remix recalling Armand Van Helden in his prime. He ups the pace, adds a brutal bottom end, chucks in a jazz break on top of the acid and vocal and it’s dance floor dynamite.

A very good friend was having a tough time and going through some heavy stuff. She was going to do a mushroom trip to help navigate things and I offered to provide a soundtrack. Warm, comforting and positive was what I aimed for; here’s how it came out.

Flash Atkins Mushroom Mixtape

Acid House Creator is the second single from "The Life and Times” album.  It comes stamped with the Andrew Weatherall seal of approval after he featured it on his Resident Advisor podcast. 

The original is a pitched down deep house chugger that is heavy on atmosphere, lulling you in to the break when WHOOMPH!  Arps take over, the bass unfolds then it’s tops off and time to get your gurn on.  Things are taken down again and before you know it the break is back bigger, badder and better than the first time.  

The first remix comes from the unofficial King of Norway Ralph Myerz and officially a producer who smashes it every time.  Harking back to the legendary Erot, this is a pacy main room deep disco floor filler.  Messy claps, clav, bumping bass, acid and plenty of disco dust hit the sweet spot and that’s before Javiera Menas brings the Brazilian flavour.

San Francisco’s Tal M. Klen takes things subterranean with a mix that is full of wonk and acid.  There’s a heavy groove lurking under the bonnet with lush strings and Detroit pads sweetening the taste but this is serious electronic dance music for those who know.

Finally Paper favourites 2 Billion Beats take things to the beach.  There’s a live kit, 80s bass, plenty of synths and we’re talking balearic baby as the original parts are woven in to a dreamy delight.

Flash Atkins hits hard with the second 12" to be taken from his critically acclaimed “The Life and Times” album on Paper Recordings.  This time he pulls in three of the world’s best producers of underground future disco and all of them step up the the plate to score a bullseye with their first throw.

First up The Emperor Machine has taken Summer of Love to analogue heaven with arps, heavily treated vocals, electro bass and wacked out beats.  The track’s stripped back dynamics keep changing as it’s deep drug chug rocks out for over 10 sublime proto-disco minutes.

Man of the moment Fila Brazilia’s Steve Cobby is enjoying a renaissance after two albums that have ruled 2014 / 15.  On Forbidden Flesh he takes Crazy P’s Danielle Moore’s vocals and lays them over a soulful techy track that will fit any after dark occasion with devastating results.  And it’s got loads of cowbell.

After the veterans it’s time for a young gun to nail his colours to the mast.  Iceland’s B.G.Baarregaard has been one to watch and his blend of good time disco has been lining him up as Todd Terje’s heir apparent.  This remix is peak-time nu-disco that wears it’s musicality lightly and sacrifices nothing for sheer playability.

Overall, a 12” that takes the Flash Atkins originals and breathes new life in to them for three cuts that will smash anything they’re thrown at.

It comes with a limited edition fanzine telling the story of Flash from birth to now in certain record shops.

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album 'The Life and Times' and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there's a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Here's a slight rework of the fantastic Agboju Lugun from the Nigeria 70 compilation. I've added sub, kick and percussion, a bit of 303 plus some bits and bobs..  Its also longer because 12 minutes just wasn't enough!

Shina Williams & His African Percussionists - Agboju Lugun (Flash Atkins Edit)

Flash Atkins has pulled in Charlie Sinclair, singer from one of Manchester's hottest new bands, Sylvette for a collaboration that promises to be the start of something special.  The track has already been gathering heat, with Bill Brewster calling it 'one of his favourite house records of 2017' and reports of it rocking ALFOS and The Warehouse Project.

The original has a throbbing sub over clipped techy drums, muted guitar and an incessant Moog riff.  But the killer punch is Charlie Sinclair's soulful, intimate vocals that sit beautifully over the music.  The groove is locked and builds to the break where a hint of disco hits the floor before the final section brings in the bells to devastating effect.  The end result is a track that is destined to knock socks off in the coming months.  You were warned. 

Sean Johnston liked it so much he asked to do a remix and the result is everything you would expect from the Hardway Brothers.  He keeps the original elements but toughens things up with added oomph, taking it in a proto house and techno direction.  

Finally Tal M. Klein strips the track back to it's bare basics with devastating effect. Just a kick, the guitar and serious compression provide space for the tripped out vocal and a truly psychedelic deep house experience.

Long time supporter of the label and good friend of ours Sean Johnston dons his Hardway Bros makeup bag and delivers us a straight up ALFOS makeover of Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation which is straight up E music for peak time behaviour & shenanigans. Imagine 6am sunrise tackle at Barbarellas in Croatia and you're pretty much there.

Closing things off is our head boy Massey with Leeds super dude Andy Buchan (here as Massey & Buchan) who's collar piece 'The Climber' does exactly that, climbs & builds & climbs & builds before exploding into a massive laser reaching crescendo style breakdown (of sorts!) with soaring vocal textures from The Night Giants. early doors, peak time or set closer? You decide!

Superhero/ Sound Manipulator


Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound.  Unfortunately he's fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire often stoned or drunk on borrowed money and time.

To make ends meet he uses his special powers to remix and make deep disco music for Paper Recordings.

Let’s hope it gets him back on track.
