Story :

Completely exhausted by gigs after which he had to sleep for three hours, Josh Wink went to his studio to work on the track, but the only thing that he could squeeze out of himself was laughter.

“So I said f**k it I’ll record myself laughing.” Back then, he was fascinated by, as he called it, Chicago minimalism: the less, the better. Which meant a Roland TR-909 with elements of classic house and experimental acid. Sound like it’s unfinished but interesting — it’ll do.

Don’t laugh was not recorded seriously — it’s a typical sketch: hypnotic, throbbing, diabolic. And besides, it resembled his previous release, How’s the music. Because it was recorded just for fun. But after this, Mike Weiss from a New York label, Nevrous, called. After hearing a funny demo by Wink, which he played as his background music, he immediately asked Wink to send the record to the headquarters of the label. It was Wink’s first big commercial success. Soon he would release Higher state of consciousness.

As a label, we believe in going where sound leads, and our search for the bleeding edge of electronic music has once again concluded in the stand-out percussive style bubbling up from the Buenos Aires underground. ‘Meltdown’ by Folgar & Chumbita completes our Argentinian trilogy—at least for now—with an offering of sophisticated, genre-meshing

groove and synth work. With complex layers of scintillating lead themes, nuanced sound design, and a voguish sense of weightlessness, Folgar & Chumbita deliver an artfully stripped and eclectic six-tracker with remixes by James Harcourt and Vini Pistori for Kiosk ID no. 033.

‘Small Introspection’ thrives on its namesake micro-shifts and darkly churning synth contortions. An ominous framework of oppressive subs and percussive rustlings open up vast frequency bands for morphing layers of quivering synths and resonators to strobe across a thunderous substructure like bursts of blazing energy across a blackening sky.

A field of throbbing bass patterns, plucky synth themes, and revolving percussion lay the oscillating groundwork for ‘Meltdown.’ A dubby roller that artfully contrasts moments of calm serenity with high-octane theatrics, ‘Meltdown’ discharges a vast, pitch-bending orchestra of cascading resonators and beautifully intertwining melodics.

Folgar’s solo contribution ‘Sauvé’ unleashes torrents of ethnically-charged percussion, laser-sharp electric sweeps, and salvos of polyrhythmic blips. Threading the needle between choppy, floor-focused monotony and wildly pitching impacts and overtones, ‘Sauvé’ is a bottled-up storm of arcing energy framed by a powerfully stripped beat.

Anchored by a cavernous kick and a carpet of darkly morphing saws, Chumbita’s ‘The Walk’ conjures a grungy left-field dancefloor seance through a moody, spaced-out guitar theme, mystic vocal chops, and ghostly fields of pads and resonant plucks.

James Harcourt transfigures the arcing saws on ‘Meltdown’ into a dystopian transmission of robotic synth salvos, hellish vocal effects, and an anthemic eruption of morphing, arp-crazed energy. Vini Pistori’s approach electrifies the original with cascading white noise shakers, searing amps, and sizzling snare fills in a choppy and percussive rendition with overwhelming melodics.

Despite its rhythmic complexity and meticulous sound design, ‘Meltdown’ succeeds in delivering a primal sense of pure dancefloor ecstasy, and it's this that makes Folgar & Chumbita’s vision so compelling: the Argentinian duo delivers a beautiful degree of sophistication without losing sight of their work’s raison d'être—creating powerful, floor-focused anthems that touch the mind and move the body.

Folgar & Chumbita - Meltdown (Vini Pistori Remix) [Kiosk I.D.]

It is a pleasure for Odd Pleasures to welcome Peaces, the project by Rizki S. Djanegara coming all the way from Jakarta, Indonesia. Captivated by the sound of new wave, disco, rock and post-punk, Peaces music explores and seamlessly blends these styles and beyond without any boundaries. presenting an ethereal mantra like EP, a sonic adventure to forgotten lands. The two originals provide evocative dark and pulsating atmospheres with a raw edge and energy. A distilled blend of rock with ritualistic and exotic hints.

In remix duties his good friend also hailing from Jakarta Indonesia, Arvin Fajar takes “Poised Ranger” spicing it up, with a bouncy and hypnotic energy. Ghostly voices and fast percussion combined with a steady bassline result in a relentless trip.

Wrapping up the EP comes JGR who needs no introduction, an important member of the label’s family at this point. Taking “Hour Strike” and converting it into a frenetic travel with his signature acid groovy synths, sticky basslines and a touch of perfectly arranged raw beats. Culminating in a pumped up killer of a remix.

1. Wie sieht deine Morgenroutine aus, falls du eine hast?
Bin aufjeden Fall ein Mensch der viel Zeit braucht morgens. Stehe lieber spät als früh auf und gehöre leider zu den Menschen die auch gerne mal schon vorm Frühstück eine Zigarette rauchen 😬 dazu gibts auch meist eine Tasse vom schwarzen Gold. Die Prozedur wird dann nach dem Frühstück wiederholt und wenn die meisten Menschen schon Mittagspause machen, bin ich dann auch mal bereit in den Tag zu starten!

2. Hast du ein musikalisches guilty-pleasure?
Hab ich eigentlich nicht so wirklich! 
Aber ein kleines Geheimnis kann ich trotzdem verraten: Höre gerne Hörspiele aus meiner Kindheit wenn ich nach einer langen Nacht nicht schlafen kann 😊

3. In welchem Genre warst du als Teenie zuhause? 
Hip Hop und Drum and Bass 😁 diese Zeit hat mich schon geprägt obwohl ich heutzutage in ganz anderen musikalischen Bereichen unterwegs bin. Allerdings war drum and Bass für mich auch der Beginn des Auflegens und dafür bin ich sehr dankbar! Und ab und zu werden auch mal ein paar oldschool hip Hop Scheiben zu Hause angemacht ☺️
