"The latest release by The Fantom Man is Complex World. A slightly swinging synth-electronic theme sweeps in and out of focus with little melodic ideas popping up and then vanishing while some eerie sampled voices chirp away in the background. It sounds lke it is about to fade out when suddenly it picks up in intensity and switching up and down a semi-tone, it brings a light jazz aspect to the party with some nice staccato keyboard play. Enigmatic and full of little twists. Inventive as always."

Requiem for the former USA

Jazz is everything to me. Whether it’s Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, or Miles Davis, it always takes me somewhere else, into another universe.

For this beat, I knew I wanted to start with a piano sample—something rich, something that could set the tone. Then came the drums, heavy and driving, pushing the rhythm forward. The tempo is a bit faster than what I’ve shared before, but I love it like this. I wanted to bring some variation, so I layered in an Asian instrument, because I’ve always been drawn to those textures and melodies.

When I listened back, something still felt like it was missing. That’s when I played it for my brother Bo. The moment he heard it, he said, ‘You need a trumpet on this.’ And he was right. So I went digging for the perfect trumpet riff and found a solo that had that Miles Davis touch—smooth but full of attitude. Once I chopped it up and laid it down, everything clicked.

After some sequencing, mixing, and mastering, the beat was finally ready. The whole process was both fun and challenging, but every step felt right. Hope y’all enjoy this one.
