Illusions of Power is about political corruption, the collapse and seizure of control, sparring nations, war, drugs, gangs and the fraudulent, media systems that spin it all into rolling, fear-mongering 24 hour loops. Illusions of Power is about the horrors of the modern world and a humanity haunted by its bloodied past. But as every long dark tunnel comes to an end, Illusions of Power too has its glimmers of hope.

Written with an arsenal of hardware gear from the Londoner’s studio in Berlin, Dax J’s Electric Deluxe debut is a militant, yet atmospherical dancefloor assault. As he has proven over a slew of EPs for EarToGround Records and labels like LDNWHT, Deeply Rooted, Clergy and his own Monnom Black label, his sound is a compelling and thoroughly contemporary one. Dax J’s productions are typically mercurial, informed by the past and fortified with a wide range of influences from acid and ambient, to jungle and drum & bass. His EPs are rich, kaleidoscopic ventures involving an array of tempos and moods, and Illusions of Power is no different.

In “Reign Of Terror” and “Harry The Hatchet” on the A-side, and “Zulu Nation” and “The Quest” on the flip, Dax J flexes sinewy techno muscle in his rave-inciting idiom where the new and the oldschool collide. Then in the angst-ridden “Cartagena Square” (built around field recordings from Cartagena in South America) and dreamy breakbeats of “Breaking Visions” Illusions of Power present two very different diversions from the dance. In one there is light and a sense of relief; in the other, shadowy omens of the world are massing. The future is full of promise, but be on your guard.

Suction Records presents the 2nd volume in a vinyl reissue/remix series by Toronto’s Digital Poodle: “Revision! Vol2 - Soul Crush” (suction037). Formed in 1986 by Heiki Sillaste, Digital Poodle began self-releasing experimental/EBM tapes in the late-80s, and by the early-‘90s had several releases licensed to international labels like Hyperium, Cleopatra and Ninja Tune. “Soul Crush” was an underground hit in EBM/alternative clubs around the world - particularly in Toronto, but also making an impact was Zoviet France’s Virtual Mix… This hypnotic, 13-minute psychedelic techno trip, actually a live-in-studio jam between Digital Poodle and industrial music legends :zoviet*france:, became an unlikely rave staple, spun by DJs including Sven Väth. Both mixes are featured here, alongside a killer revision by none other than Adam X, one of this legendary techno producer’s rare remix appearances. One of the few artists to credibly bridge the gap between EBM and techno, here Adam X delivers a pummelling dancefloor stormer, with Heiki’s distorted vocals taking the Adam X sound even closer than usual to a pure, vintage-EBM sound. 

Digital-only bonus remix comes from June Records’ Manie Sans Délire, a modern wave/EBM duo who turn in a bare-bones-minimal, vintage-electro revision with sparse synths and cutting TR-707 percussion. For bonus EBM points, the 12” was (re-)mastered by industrial music legend Eric Van Wonterghem (Absolute Body Control, The Klinik, Monolith).

Digital Poodle - Soul Crush (Adam X Revision)

Faosa is a collaborative project from Athens between traditional oud player Georgios Panagiotou and electronic music producer Georgios Anyfantis. 
Glistra (Sto fos) is the first appearance of the duo, included on the second Phormix tape compilation "Light Of Consciousness",

The much lauded Charles Fenckler makes a triumphant return to Soma Records with the Distant Light EP. Charles ramps up the pace with 3 tough, acid Techno tracks - firmly aimed at dance floor destruction. 

Title track Distant Light opens with a thunderously distorted 909 kick drum and wastes no time in launching into a flurry of intense percussive elements, amen style samples and alarm like synth hooks. Texture 3.0003 has a decidedly deeper feel to it yet keeps the momentum going as Fenckler works in the acid to great effect. Tension closes out EP in furious fashion as trippy vocals sit atop a crunching drum workout with Fenckler keeping it relentless with his full on, raw energy.

Berlin-based Irish artist Hybrasil returns to Rekids with four murky techno cuts in ‘We Don’t Flip’.

Having made numerous appearances on Rekids including ‘Embers’, his debut album released last year, Hybrasil has become a core artist on Matt Edwards’s label when not releasing on his very own eponymous imprint. Reflecting on an amazingly creative 2019, at the start of this year Hybrasil set a new creative path for his future live shows, writing new music that received regular support from Radio Slave, which is what ultimately shaped this new four-track release.

‘We Don’t Flip’ opens the package with an immediate shadowy aesthetic before rattling kicks, off-beat hats and snappy snares lay down the groove as distorted vocal murmurs join delayed synths. ‘Hour Glass’ is next with its syncopated rhythm and quivering pads before ‘Ikigai’ takes things into wonkier territories courtesy of subtle melodies, metallic atmospherics and dubby chords. Tying everything together, ‘System H’ takes things up a notch, adding extra oomph to the package using powerful drums, rippling bass and deep stabs.
