This piece reminds me of Ives. Nice orchestration.

This is a demo of a song I wrote on a songwriting workshop.
I recorded it while working on another set of songs but it doesn't really fit with that set. I'm not quite sure what to do with it.
Any suggestions?

CONCERTO for VIOLA and STRING ORCHESTRA 
1. Allegro  2. Andante  3. Vivo
Although inspired by the classical, three movement model, this concerto presents and develops its themes in a fluid, almost improvisational manner; the soloist's fellow string players are there in a supporting role, as hosts rather than as protagonists. Thus the full richness of the viola's emotive tone is fully heard and reverberated. The first movement presents a bouncy, rhythmical motif and explores its path through various moods and guises. The second has an evocative and reflective aura; its initially simple harmonies are allowed to transform - sometimes into dense, but still quiet, discord and tension. The finale is energetic, with rapid passages which are often pulsing with the thrust of imaginary dance rhythms. This Concerto is the third in a series of several concertos for various instruments, and like the ones for guitar and for trombone, was commissioned by James Durrant MBE for the Glasgow Festival Strings. He conducted the premieres of all three. 
The soloist here is Gillianne Haddow - performing with Glasgow Festival Strings at Ballater Music Society in July 1999.

VIOLA CONCERTO

DIVERTIMENTO
In composing for 20 distinct viola 'voices' I was pleasantly surprised at the satisfying and harmonically-complete sound world that emerged. The music opens in realism - with distinctive theme notes sweeping stereophonically around the ensemble - in stage performances, the 20 or more violists face the audience in a big semi-circle. The music soon dissolves into a dream-like sequence of textures, often featuring harmonics and glissandos. Eventually, a crescendo leads back to the strong regular rhythms of the opening theme. It was commissioned in 1977 for the Scottish Viola International summer school by James Durrant MBE who conducted the premiere. He revived it for the 1994 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.  That year he included it on his CD album 'Viola Pieces' - playing all 20 parts himself - and that is the version presented here.

DIVERTIMENTO for 20 violas

Alan Fleming-Baird studied with composer Sir John Tavener before attending the Royal College of Music studying; composition with Jeremy Dale Roberts, piano with David Ward, and conducting with Neil Thompson. He then received a John Mather Scholarship to undertake post-graduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has also taken part in seminars with: Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, George Benjamin, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, and Brian Eno. As well as his qualifications in music, he also holds an Honours Degree in English Literature from the Open University. His music has been performed by : London Festival Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia of London, Psappha, City of Birmingham Choir, Belcea Quartet, Edinburgh Quartet, Paragon Ensemble, Croft Ensemble, as well as various amateur orchestras and ensembles.
