Four Tet, Fred Again.. & Skrillex in Times Square for The Lot Radio

It was a decade best summed up by podcasts, cancel culture, fake news and memeing our way through tragedy and triumph. But was 2012-2022 any crazier than eras past, or was it that the prevalence of social media put major international events on our digital doorsteps? A Hollywood star becoming the leader of the free world? Bizarre… but it wasn’t the first time. 

Obscure global events just felt more tangible than ever, and we were all finally able to have our say. Communication with pop stars and major companies was instantaneous, and stardom was diluted by the ability for strangers to become a viral sensation overnight. 

With the advance of accessible technology came the explosion of bedroom producers like Flume, who would dictate the direction and popularity of an entire genre. At a glance, many could argue it was the death of originality in pop culture, with covers, remixes, sequels, prequels and remakes dominating the mainstream. The recent emergence of AI will either give those creative minds the resources to forge a new path into 2032, or accelerate us into repetition.

This is the final instalment of the decade mixes. But this time it's a little bit different.

This is the decade that turned us into what we are now. This mix is effectively our condensed dance music bible (believe it or not, there are lots of tunes we couldn't fit in). The mix is done in the same style in which we remember our clubbing experiences. Most notably, The Bang Gang parties every Friday night in Sydney. Those guys were a HUGE part of why we became DJ's in the first place. This mix will, for better or worse, dig up a few dance-floor 'moments' for anyone who took part in the madness. 

So many of these songs are classics to us, and probably are to many others too. It's hard to hear these songs without cracking a smile and remembering a great time of irresponsibility. 

You won't find too many mixtapes in this style anymore. And certainly not from us. But we had to show what this decade was all about to us, and how it brought us to what we do today.  

We're dedicating this mix to our belated friend and mentor, Ajax. He's had more influence on this final chapter than anyone will ever know.

Thanks to everyone who got behind these mixes. It's been a long ride.

The mix kicks off with Bruce Channel's 'Hey! Baby' (that song you've heard the crowd sing after every gig you've been too). The decade saw revolutions play out in the street, presidents assassinated, and the ideologies of war and peace clash head-on. All of this played out to The Rolling Stones, to The Supremes, to The Jackson 5, and yet, the most beautiful part of this decade was the unashamed positivity in music, during a time that gave the world so much to be unhappy about. The mix ends the same way so many of our DJ sets have; with Todd Terje's edit of 'Stuck In The Middle With You' - because how could you finish any other way?
