About 10-11 years ago when living in Nottingham, a friend of mine, @Simon Bailey, gave me a mixtape he made on CD, and it was not like the kind of thing I’d been used to hearing DJs in Melbourne mix. It was super eclectic, and full of a mix of rock and left field electro tunes. I loved it, and listened to it in on repeat in our rental car driving all across Spain with @Mark Lawler & @Ben Landodo. When I got back to Notts was dying to make my own version as homage. Without decks in Notts, I hunted vinyl for months, finding all sorts of weird bootlegs and remixes, and as soon as I got back to Melbourne, I mixed my homage on vinyl in my bedroom, ready to take back to the UK shortly after for more adventures. Only really messing with techno and breaks previously, this opened me up a lot to play more eclectically, and get creative with key mixing and BPM bridging with different styles and sounds, and layering things that wouldn’t ordinarily be considered to mix well. It really helped me grow as a DJ, giving me confidence to try as many different things in my sets, and get more experimental and improvise on the fly in the club - perfect for me at the time playing St.Jerome’s every weekend, which attracted people that loved music, but not necessarily a deep love of electronic like I had. 

So, in the current climate of algorithm streaming and playlists, people don’t hold mixes in as high regard as they used to with CDs, but I still do, and have a long list of mixes on rotation at home, but more specifically in the car. Nowadays as I try to hone my production skills and just record my DJ sets in the club, I don’t do as many studio mixes as I used to, or would like to, but I’ve have had a few people asking me over the years if I was ever gonna do a Volume Two, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to revisit. I listen to so many different types of music and don’t get to play this type of thing in the club anymore, so it’s been really fun to make. As everyone does their 10 year photo challenges, I’m doing the same with music, and refreshing the old rent a car mixtape concept with a bunch of stuff I’ve acquired over the last 10 years - combining rock, electronic, hiphop, disco, pop, and anything else I can cram in, not so much as a mashup, but as a chilled journey. 80 minutes, so it can be burned to CD for a road trip with a bunch of music loving mates to go on a journey with, and hopefully pleases most people in the car.
