My entry for the August 2021 Image-Line forum music competition.

Rules:
Only two samples allowed -- kick and snare. No volume variations.
All other sounds must be made with the Fruity DX10, a 3-op FM synth. No plugins allowed, and no filters.

As a personal rule, I decided to not use any of the DX10 presets, as I figured I'd take the opportunity to learn some FM synthesis. It really is a weird and not-at-all-intuitive process, more akin to riding a dragon than the brainy work involved in something like Harmor. Had a blast, though!

I wrote this while the lead developer of the game and a bunch of friends and strangers watched my computer screen (and perv-cams of my "is it auto-saving, or crashed" face) as I showed exactly how every note of this song was layered in from start to finish. Brought back an old song for Return to Aloha! The album's coming along at a glacial pace due to a bazillion other things dominating my life at the moment (chiefly things to do with the upcoming novel release!) I hope this song (and this adorable drawing of Capel by Renz!) will bring you some joy in the meantime. 
I think the song sounds very much like a busy place, so I figured "Workzone" would be a pretty good title for it. Also one of the few times I've gotten to do major key in the Capel albums!

This tune won the „insane combined music competion“ at Nordlicht 2020 demoparty. Dedicated to Ultrasyd who passed away in october 2020. Rest in peace!
This song was originally composed for a C64 DTV demo*. As we did not manage to release it I decided to finalize the tune for the „Notlicht 2020 insane combined music competition“.
The 3 voices of the #C64 #8580 #sid were directly recorded into Logic Pro X from the real machine with a #8580r5 SID chip.
Then I added a #behringermodeld in the beginning for some filtered bass sound and a #waldorfstreichfett for chords and a string in the beginning. The drums are the original C64 drums mixed with some drums from #nativeinstrumentsbattery .
For the #acousticguitar outro I recorded my playing with the excellent #harleybenton CLG-650SM-CE BK. In this little video I mixed some clips from the #commodore64 and #logicprox .
*the #c64dtv cannot handle hard restart of notes and has no filter like the original C64. The only filtered sound you hear is in the beginning, it‘s the deep bass drone from the Behringer Model D.
