mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.

The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Molly Matalon and design by Bill Kouligas. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with Mount Analog for the LA Art Book Fair 2017, before going on general release.

The clouds passed by slowly on a dreamy summer afternoon, the leaves began to flutter in the trees as the wind picked up. Down by the canal, people watched the water roll on down the stream towards the central river. The canal was like the veins of the city, passing life between the cells of the system which was swarmed and swamped by people in towerblocks and on high streets. This place was special, it was an escape from the struggle and strife of city living. A chance for something new...

Cong Burn is a record label perhaps underestimated, it has been an outlet for intricate experimentation and has been responsible for the release of music by the likes of Lanark Artefax, BFTT, Howes, Chekov and more. US midwestern gem Ilana Bryne is back on Naive and, once again, she's got you covered for grade "A" contemplative-but-propulsive groovers, perfectly timed for these trying days. Like her debut EP "Low Earth Orbit" from last year, "Strange Adventure" layers sharp rhythms and playful touches with ethereal atmospheres and open spatiality. But stagnating she is not; her pristine production turned even brighter on this one, reaching a level of sonic and compositional finesse that has to be heard to be believed. 

Profound musical influences come through in this premiere's 'Used To Love T H E M', through echoes of Chicagoans like Glenn Underground, Gemini, and Boo Williams, tempered to perfection with the floaty atmospherics and chopped breaks of LTJ Bukem and other masters of liquid DNB. Delicate synth sequences illustrate loving dialogues between bass bin-busting subs and suspended Rhodes chords or airy pads, traveling through dynamic arrangements, with the odd moment of suspense done fresh.

Over the last month, the music and events industry has entered unchartered territory due to the Covid-19 lockdown, and artists and online media have found themselves in a financially vulnerable position with much more time on their hands. 

To help some of those artists, Ransom Note reached out to some friends of the website with the challenge to make a track in collaboration with another producer, musician or vocalist, remotely, in 10 days. The result is ‘Pen Pals’: a compilation featuring 15 collaborations from 32 artists. We feature Graded artists Tom VR & Otik's contribution titled 'Poly Echo 97'.
