Already stratospherically famous by the mid-1980s with WHAM!, the group he formed with school friend Andrew Ridgeley, George Michael would go on to become a fully fledged icon in his solo career. He used his star power to poke at conservative sensibilities and wrote refreshingly frank lyrics about sex and relationships that never coddled his young audience. Gifted with a beautiful tenor, but cursed by the prying eyes of the press, especially during his solo career, Michael's work slowed and he shied from the public in later years, but he was constantly buoyed up until his untimely passing by a cult, loving fanbase, and his music - which speaks for itself.

'I wanted to create a home-listening mix that layers different emotions and textures in a way that isn't prescriptive, but rather creates an open ended sonic space for the listener to experience and emote and feel. As always I keep my selections pretty eclectic and loose in terms of genre. I wanted to bring in some textures and instrumentation that felt organic or pastoral but in a kind of sparse and cold way that reminds me of early spring.'

back again with my end of year mixtape & essay for my mubi notebook magazine column, this mix is very much more like a personal one rather than an end of year in films round up. for someone who in part works around the release of new films, I don't actually end up getting to see it all and Im not always so up to date and I hate the idea of some sort of contrite 2024 round up mix. when making my cinema sound work I always try and bend the material in front of me to find alternative possibilities of narrative or (re)context or to reintroduce it to the world, it has to be a devotion to something that incredibly excites me. I found that making this mix (deep in the night at a friends in a chaotic time) there were so many personal favourites (suicide, dean blunt, silver apples, throbbing gristle, etc) moods and textures that I’m drawn to, that the 70 odd minutes was more akin to putting together an end of year catharsis work than studying the music and sounds within the last years cinema. and the film list was not a best watch, some I only found through the sounds making this (although some do slap hard and I watched b4hand) but sonics I picked up on and felt helped make the collage through their sonic worlds. kevin costner still got it
